It sounds like a psychopath. I guess it makes sense since it is a computer trying to have emotions.

I can't believe people are saying Telegram and Threema might be better than Signal. Signal isn't perfect but Telegram and Threema are worse.

Pretty much all the Xfce4 apps support Wayland. We just need Xfce4 panel and the desktop.

How to randomly pad files before encryption to prevent file fingerprinting?

Hi, I was planning to encrypt my files with GPG for safety before uploading them to the cloud. However, from what I understand GPG doesn't pad files/do much to prevent file fingerprinting. I was looking around for a way to reliably pad files and encrypt metadata for them but couldn't find anything. Haven't found any...

You could use Duplicati. I'm not sure if it does padding but it simplifies encryption and prevents corruption.

Are the following NAS options okay for live transcoding?

I am setting up a new Jellyfin server, and I am looking at using a NAS to host it through Docker. However, I don't want to make the mistake of forgetting about the power needed for live transcoding (MKV 480p -> MP4 (I haven't set up a good conversion method yet)). Are any of the following NAS options okay for standalone...

possiblylinux127 ,
@possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip avatar

You need either integrated Intel graphics or a low end external GPU. Make sure that the NAS has one of those options.

However, I'm not sure of the NAS software will support accessing GPU. You might want to look into building something a little more custom. I am not much of a NAS guy so I can't really say what the best NAS for Jellyfin is.

From a security perspective its hard to go wrong with physical disks

Inflation is normalized if you like it or not. Its caused by raising minimum wage among other things.

@possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip avatar

I don't understand what you are trying to say

Edit: I don't mean to be rude but you shouldn't share personal information on the internet and especially not on Lemmy. You might be in need of OpSec first aid

Me either but we got a really personal story

Damn the internet is harsh. Then again, I'm not sure what this user expected when they posted this.

@possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip avatar

By definition, they are illegal. I'm not sure why the government would give them IDs as they aren't suppost to be there to begin with.

To be far, US legal migration is a nightmare and hard to get though.

possiblylinux127 ,
@possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip avatar

Immigration is a complex issue. I think the problem is no one wants to spend money on those people. You are talking about giving them free stuff with no incentive to work. Sure you could just take it away after a period of time but at the end of the day there is a better solution.

What would be ideal is that companies could have process for legally bring people to work. They could have contracts where a person works for a set period of time and after that time they are a citizen. The key would be to protect the workers rights via OSHA and other labor laws. This would especially be needed as they would be on a contract.

What's a good NAS and server system under CAD$900 (USD$658)?

I am currently using an old laptop (circa 2015) with a 250GB SSD in it, and 4GB of RAM. It runs Fedora 39 Server, and only hosts a Jellyfin instance through Docker right now (though I want to use Nextcloud later too). There is only 15GB of storage left on it, and the CPU is constantly overloaded (due to forced transcoding). I...

Get a old used desktop from eBay. Use either Intel QuickSync (Intel integrated) or a dedicated GPU.

Additionally, use a LTS and keep good backups. Fedora Server shouldn't be used for anything actively depended apon. You could move to Rocky Linux, Debian or something else.

possiblylinux127 ,
@possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip avatar

Additionally ARM is mostly a miss when it comes to transcoding.

possiblylinux127 ,
@possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip avatar

Keep in mind this could drive up your energy bill.

possiblylinux127 ,
@possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip avatar

That's great if it works for you. However, a lot of us don't want the bigger power bill. It also has the problem of heating everything up.

I like CPUs with lower TDPs

possiblylinux127 ,
@possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip avatar

The problem is it isn't cost effective with electricity. You can pick up a CPU that is more efficient.

I'm not saying your wrong but what your describing is not great for some people including myself.

Your not wrong but there are also trade offs

This is why I'm glad I live in the US

I can choose to have tethered bottle caps or untethered bottle caps. Can you say the same?

possiblylinux127 ,
@possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip avatar

This was not an an attempt to start a huge debate. I'm just glad I don't have to deal with that here.

Its not that I think the US is better. For instance, I think we could use some privacy and consumer rights.

1000+ Firefox for Android extensions now available – Mozilla Add-ons Community Blog ( blog.mozilla.org )

The new open ecosystem of extensions on Firefox for Android launched in December with just over 400 extensions. Less than five months later we’ve surpassed 1,000 Firefox for Android extensions. That’s an impressive achievement by this developer community! It’s exciting to see so many developers embrace the opportunity to...

Extensions or front ends?

For extensions I use libredirect and for YouTube I use invidious. Libreredirect redirects YouTube links and replaces embedded YouTube videos.

May find a way to cluster GPUs and put a crazy amount of ram in a machine with a very power CPU that has enough memory channels and PCIe lanes to support it.

You also will need very fast storage
