@allstartrek

oh no - this is the saddest episode of Voyager.

@pbharristoo @allstartrek I am not a fan of the "sledgehammer" storytelling approach that they use at the end and the fucked up bullshit argument they use to justify it (e.g. you must go through a highly traumatic experience to understand how a real family operates). I usually end up tuning out before the end because I don't need an artificial downer ending making me feel even more depressed about life. 😐

This is the 1st time I've seen it, and the whole idea that Be'lanna tweaked his holodeck program to have Dr Kenneth's family fall apart in 2 or 3 days was messed up. Bit of an after school special saying trauma has to be faced, not sure it's really REQUIRED tho.

Plus, I loved the son's argument about culture being "different" so you can't judge it. Like, my dude, I judged the crap out of Klingon culture in DS9 as entertaining but BAD.

@kcarr2015 @pbharristoo @allstartrek Real Life certainly has some decent high points... But the tragic ending and all of its related emotional labor makes it extremely difficult to remember the rest of the episode.

@kcarr2015 @arazil @pbharristoo @allstartrek What is the purpose of allowing an artificial intelligence to "die"? He could have copied her program. Or informed her of her true nature and offered her the chance to continue to exist.

@Meowthias @kcarr2015 @pbharristoo @allstartrek The end of that episode is complete BS. The justification for the final scene only works if you assume that the Doctor's family is real (and then you effectively have the episode "Latent Image"). But, as the rest of the episode establishes, Doctor's family is holographic and fairly easy to reprogram... So what is the Doctor actually getting out of this traumatic extended role play scenario other than a decent chance of a future PTSD episode? 🤷

@arazil @Meowthias @pbharristoo @allstartrek
Maybe one of Be'lanna's tweaks was to the Dr's holomatrix so he was forced to consider them as real?

@arazil @kcarr2015 @pbharristoo @allstartrek I interpret the family as being semi-sentient, and therefore allowing his daughter to die is kind of a monstrous act.

@arazil @allstartrek yeah - I had to turn it off

@pbharristoo @allstartrek It’s too much. I avoid watching it.
