Very cool! I do not use Gem, but perhaps at some point the will be available in other form/sources.

I am more of a (though I particularly love good ,) so of course I immediately picked up on the opening parallels to 's , which is why I bought it and read it. A ghost story! Excellent. I have not re-read it recently - I keep telling myself to find what else has written!

53% of UK Parents Don’t Buy Books for Their Children

The survey found that 28% of parents cited affordability as a barrier to purchasing books for their children. For many families, budgeting for essential needs takes precedence over buying books, which might be seen as a non-essential expense.

36 Pearl, Simon Armitage. I quite like alliterative poetry over the rhyme at the end of a line style, something about the rhythm of the words carries you along. Although in this case the subject of the text was distinctly less appealing. The surmise is that a jeweler is bemoaning the loss of a peal and it slowly becomes clear he is discussing a person, not a jewel. The introduction by the author was interesting and added to my appreciation of the structure of the work. #books @bookstodon

Borrowed The Lost Cause, written by @pluralistic (from the library), and was an enjoyable sci-fi novel, although perhaps too close for comfort to the present, and most certainly more optimistic than some of us here would be about the future; but, well recommended nonetheless. The hero of the book most certainly would be a denizen of this slice of the Fediverse.

Truth: A Brief History of Total Bullsh*t by Tom Phillips, 2019

As the editor of the UK's leading independent fact-checker, Tom Phillips deals with complete bollocks every day. Here, he tells the hilarious story of how we humans have spent history lying to each other - and ourselves - and asks an important question: how can humanity move towards a truthier future?

A New Basis for Animal Ethics: Telos and Common Sense by Bernard E. Rollin, 2016

“Possibly the most important book on animal welfare written to date. In exquisite chapter after chapter Rollin presents the philosophical background of what telos is, why it matters and demonstrates with stories, anecdotes, and data, why common sense is an important basis for understanding animals, their needs and their wants."
