There’s a new playbook being written right now when it comes to the future of social media. The early-mover advantage is still in effect, and there’s a lot to figure out. Gone are opaque algorithms and the whims of any single company.

The fediverse represents a chance for quality journalism to shine again.

We talked to two leaders at fedi-forward publications — @TheConversationUS's @BostonAbrams, and @404mediaco's @jasonkoebler — about why they’re investing in the open social web, what they’ve learned so far, and their advice for other publishers just getting started.

Right-wing Australian billionaire and money-bag climate change denier Gina Reinhart apparently doesn't want people to see her portrait by the Indigenous artist Vincent Namatjira in the National Gallery.

So it would be just awful if people share this article and her portrait.

Personally, I think it's great - and might make a very attractive t-shirt?

The Georgian parliament approved a divisive "foreign influence" bill that sparked weeks of mass protests.

@dw reports: "Critics have called it a threat to domestic freedoms and the country's aspirations to join the European Union. They have also drawn comparisons with comparable rules introduced in Russia in recent years."

The Biden Admin's rule limiting credit card late fees was set to begin tomorrow.

But a Trump-appointed judge blocked it at the request of the Chamber of Commerce — costing U.S. families an estimated $27 million a day.

MAGA and corporate interests want to keep ripping you off.

This is the sort of thing that I wish @MeidasTouch would amplify and maybe get the mainstream to respond.

The final text we see in this series is Cuomo telling Cohen that it will be "too late" if he waits until Tuesday to defend Trump on TV. Cohen was in London.

Cuomo says of Trump: "He is dying right now."

The Biden admin needs better PR, ASAP:

"Majorities know little or nothing about the Biden admin's INFRA bill, CHIPS act, ARP & IRA. While 40% of respondents said Biden has done more than Trump on INFRA, 37% said Trump had done more.

It's largely a media problem, large chunk is Fox News & Sinclair, their local affiliate, RW radio... If Biden did anything good, they won't hear it, but they'll hear lies, or gross distortions of the truth-."

One of the local papers has a headline "Hamas accepts Gaza cease-fire." The story below points out that Israel has rejected that cease-fire and will proceed to assault Rafah.

So the headline is "cease-fire" but there is no cease-fire. The headline is "cease-fire" when "new assault planned" would also be supported by the facts.

I don't think you have to feel any specific way about the war to see that this is nothing like unbiased journalism.

This week in the Disconnect Roundup I’m reflecting on how bias affects tech coverage as I find my own positive views toward Sony affecting how I see the Paramount acquisition talks. Plus, the usual recommended reads, labor updates, and other tech news!

This is a well reported piece but the framing is bizarre.

When a mob attacks a group of protesters under cover of darkness, they are not counter-protesting.

And as the reporting makes clear, they didn’t “provoke” violence, they perpetrated it as the cops and campus security stood by.

Big Journalism's timidity is never more obvious than when, confronted with a blatant lie from a (usually Republican) politician, the news org then frames the lie as a mere mistake.

Example today from ABC News -- headline:

"South Dakota Gov. Noem admits error of describing meeting Kim Jong Un in new book"

Come on, journalists, this just makes you look ridiculous.

kristen_d , avatar
