I know a lot of devs don't like it when it's used against them but my favorite feature we see in tools like Github and Gitlab is the ability to attach emoji like thumbs up, thumbs down, etc to a post, it gives you a good quick indication of who everybody is sick of dealing with

BrodieOnLinux OP ,
@BrodieOnLinux@linuxrocks.online avatar

@nicemicro The extra best part is if you hover over the number on Gitlab it tells you who selected what

hey #linux users on the fediverse, is there a way to tile windows on KDE Plasma 6? I've seen some stuff about Bismuth but it doesn't look like it's functional anymore, is there anything similar?

A lot of people say "all software is open source if you know assembly" this is obviously a joke but lets over analyze it

It is explicitly not Open Source (as in licensed in such a way) as the developers have not assigned it such a license, however if you stretch the definition of "source" to mean any code that runs the application rather than the actual source form of the code you could argue that all code by definition is source available.

BrodieOnLinux OP , (edited )
@BrodieOnLinux@linuxrocks.online avatar

Therefore if you use the non technical usage which a lot of people who don't understand code use where "source available = open source" you could say that "if you know assembly all software is open source"

BrodieOnLinux OP ,
@BrodieOnLinux@linuxrocks.online avatar

@nicemicro I don't why that was even brought up in the article, if that was how open source worked Firefox wouldn't be open source

To illustrate just how utterly boneheaded UI design has become, I present you with Geary.

  1. This is the minimum size of the window. If I make it any narrower, the email portion will disappear and the email list will expand to cover the entire area.
  2. But! You say, you can use the column dividers, to resize the individual columns, right? Nope, the GNOME/Geary people think you should not be able to resize the columns manually like you could before. No explanation, just fuck you.
  3. So. Much. Whitespace. The amount of whitespace wasted in Geary is absolutely batshit insane. This window could present the same amount of information while taking up half the screenspace and still be 100% clear and usable.
  4. Related to 3, no options to change density or other options to reduce this whitespace hellscape.

This one fucking email client takes up nearly my entire 2x 4K display. I can't believe we let these people define the 'default' Linux desktop and let them get away with it.

BrodieOnLinux ,
@BrodieOnLinux@linuxrocks.online avatar

@TheEvilSkeleton @thomholwerda @tbernard I don't think he's arguing against good defaults but it seems to me like an impossible task to set a standard size that works for every single user, best of both words is you have a good default sizing and then you have to toggle the ability to resize so that you don't accidentally change things

BrodieOnLinux ,
@BrodieOnLinux@linuxrocks.online avatar

@TheEvilSkeleton @thomholwerda There is a middle ground between 0 choice and emacs and a standard email client feature seems much closer to the former than the latter

Support for Windows 10 will end in October 2025

After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for Windows 10. Your PC will still work, but we recommend moving to Windows 11.

Whilst the term underflow does have a different meaning when referring to floating point numbers, it can also refer to an integer going past the minimum limit , this may also be called a negative overflow but that is not the only correct term for it. The saga of GNOME DRM Leasing is fun
> ACK let's implement it
> No we're not implementing we never agreed to do so
> Valve should come up with something better
> Lets implement a portal
> Lets not
> Lets implement a Dbus service
> Lets not
> Lets implement the protocol actually

BrodieOnLinux OP ,
@BrodieOnLinux@linuxrocks.online avatar

As of about a week ago an MR was opened to get the protocol implemented, so soon Valve can finally stop recommending that you install KDE as a fix to get VR working on GNOME wayland

BrodieOnLinux OP ,

We need to start teaching classes on AI not because AI is the future, but because as far as I can tell the majority of people are literally incapable of understanding what an AI actually does.
It feels like when people see ChatGPT mis-answer something they think "ah must just be a bug, it'll get fixed".
No. That's not a bug. It gives bogus answers because it doesn't do anything but generate a sentence that looks similar to what an answer to your question could look like

BrodieOnLinux ,
@BrodieOnLinux@linuxrocks.online avatar

@Lyude I know there is a lot of money being thrown at the AI hallucination problem, but to the best of my knowledge so far there hasn't been any concrete findings coming out of the research
