I disagree, you can see so much on the old layout specifically because it's a wall of text. The new layout is unnecessarily bloated and takes up your whole screen on every device you view it from, so you can barely see more than one or two posts at a time. It removes the ability for the user to freely scroll and look at things that interest them, and forces the user's attention onto exactly what the algorithm wants them to. The new layout removes a ton of agency from the user.

Threads is automatically hiding comments that mention Pixelfed ( mastodon.social )

For anyone wondering if Threads and Facebook at large will be a fine neighbor in the space and compatible with other apps/services in the fediverse: they’re already automatically hiding comments that mention Pixelfed https://mastodon.social/@dansup/112126250737482807

Thread showing meta hid a comment that mentioned Pixelfed

This only hides content locally for Threads users, it doesn't affect visibility from any other fedi platform. It's not that different from a Lemmy instance downvoting a comment to the point of being auto-hidden; it still exists but requires an extra click to see from your instance, and the rest of the fediverse can access it normally.

Nintendo isn't against emulation. They're against piracy, which Yuzu was facilitating. None of the emulators that don't have specific support for unreleased games have been touched so far.

For some Helldivers 2 players, the fascist role-play has gone too far ( www.polygon.com )

It took GantztheDemon 10 days to be able to play Helldivers 2 again. On Feb. 21, TikTok user AJGaming shared a video featuring Gantz killing them. The sequence went viral overnight, garnering 4.8 million views as of this writing. A subsection of the Helldivers 2 community, hung up on the politically charged satire theme of the...

As somebody in both communities, these people are outliers, by far. I'd say 95% of the randoms I play with in either game are decent folk who aren't trying to ruin other people's fun. Even if the random player is way too underleveled for the mission and picked 4 support weapon strategems not knowing what they are and keeps getting stuck in respawn loops, everybody has been friendly and helpful, because that's the democratic way. Anybody who tries to make the lives of their fellow players miserable is a dirty traitor and will be court-martialed.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

That's quite the escalation. Mr Beast isn't making people kill each other.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

Good on them for acknowledging what was a pretty terrible response to player complaints. It's one thing to be firm in your balancing decisions, but it's another thing to demean your players over it.

That said, the responses from a lot of the players were also really over-the-top to begin with. Hopefully Arrowhead is able to remedy this combativeness between the studio and the community. A live service game really only does well when the developers are on the same wavelength as their players.

The mechs are cool, but I've got a feeling that their use case will be very situational. I'm more excited for the other vehicles that we should also be getting soon.

That fork seems like a cash grab considering it already has a Patreon.

Have they learned nothing from the lawsuit?

Chozo , (edited )
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

I wonder why they settled

I'd imagine because they charged for access to piracy-specific functions of the tool and knew they couldn't argue a case.

It was a dumb move for them to add functionality for unreleased games in the first place, and an even worse move to charge money for it. It makes it a lot harder to convince a court that your tool is for backup/archival purposes only, when you have features that could only work with pirated materials.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

Even though it may seem disappointing, this was realistically the right call. You know what they say about broken clocks, and all.

They didn't say he couldn't be removed from the ballot, just that it's a federal issue to solve and not a state one. And had they allowed it, that precedent would have been abused almost immediately and been back in the court's review all over again and would have resulted in a ton of dramatic and divisive political theater in the meantime.

Though, it does highlight some significant flaws in our electoral process. There's a lot of conflict between what the states and what the fed should be able to do for elections. The whole system needs to be revamped, IMO. Why each state sets their own rules is baffling to me in the first place; the Presidency affects the entire country, not just the states, so I don't get why we aren't going by nationwide popular vote instead of "California's electors picked Candidate A even though the majority of the voters picked Candidate B, and Iowa voters did a collective Hokey Pokey in a big expo center and decided on Candidate C", etc.

Does anybody happen to have contact with Ernest outside of Kbin? It's a little concerning that his last update over a month ago was that he was going in for a medical procedure and that he'd only be gone for a few days. I hope he's doing alright.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

Maybe you should think of non-awful words to use, instead.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

I understand the idea of reclaiming a slur. But general audiences might not recognize what you're saying for what it is. And nothing stops a bad actor from making the same claims and using the terms in bad faith, hence why it's generally easier from all sides to use different verbiage.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

Well ain't this just unfortunate timing.

Roku TV bricked until agreeing to new terms of service

See title - very frustrating. There is no way to continue to use the TV without agreeing to the terms. I couldn't use different inputs, or even go to settings from the home screen and disconnect from the internet to disable their services. If I don't agree to their terms, then I don't get access to their new products. That...

Chozo ,
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

Eh, the built-in speakers on most TVs these days are all pretty trash across the board. You pretty much need a sound bar at the very least, these days.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

I feel like that trope doesn't really ring true these days, as most of the "general purpose" instances are pretty moderate. Back when Lemmy was still just a small handful of instances, that was definitely the case, but I think the wider adoption has balanced things out a bit closer toward center, overall.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

Unfortunately, it still happens even here on Lemmy. I don't think we see it as much because most communities here have far fewer mods than adjacent Reddit subs on average, but occasionally you'll find a mod here who thinks they know better than their community and does whatever they feel like.

Android Microphone Snooping ( lemmy.world )

So I had a verbal conversation with a coworker yesterday and now I'm getting fed very specific ads. No possible way it's accidental. I use a Oneplus 9 pro, does anyone have recommendations on how to further root...

I also recommend Pluto.TV for anybody who enjoys Plex's live TV. They've got a similar business model in place (watch for free with regularly-scheduled ads, like normal TV), and some different content sources (as well as some overlapping sources). Like Plex, it also doesn't require any account to watch. It also has an app for most TV platforms.

It's time to cancel reddig33.

Chozo ,

I like to imagine that this whole event was the result of the first truly rogue AI that generated its own plans for an event, sent out the necessary emails to hire the people to put it together, and everything in secret under its creator's nose.

It probably isn't that, though. Because even AI wouldn't fuck up this badly.

I will absolutely blame the voters, because it'd literally be their fault. That's how elections work.

A buddy of mine gifted me a copy of Helldivers 2 the other day, so I've been spending some time spreading Managed Democracy across the galaxy. Mostly going back and forth between Helldivers and The Finals lately.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

I use Kbin, so my experience is a little different, but do Lemmy instances not have default communities? If not, that seems like a pretty good addition, but if so, then I think that experience is going to be largely dictated by the individual instance you're signing up with.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

They're already intercepting every packet that leaves your modem before it even reaches your ISP. They've got your data before Lemmy even has it.

Has anyone else gravitated back to *facebook* a bit?

i can't believe i'm saying this, but i'm finding myself enjoying facebook more. the UI and design feels vintage early 2010s, the choice of reactions is nice vs just liking or upvoting something, you can sort the replies by chronology / recent / best instead of being forced to read blue-check morons, there's an incredible depth...

Chozo ,
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

I miss what Facebook used to offer in the earlier days. I miss being able to keep up friends and family and having a central place for everybody to just share things. It was nice for a while. It was also just nice having an account where I felt comfortable putting my face and name out there; I know that may seem kinda weird to most people, but there was something weirdly relieving about having one place where I could just say "This is me" without using a screen name and feel right about it. Facebook used to be that place for me.

Then once Facebook started to monetize every pixel on my screen and every post on my feed was just a link to something I couldn't care less about or trying to sell me something or infect me with something else, it became unbearable. The last time I logged into Facebook, I scrolled for probably five whole minutes before I was able to find a single, actual post written by somebody I actually cared about. Everything else was just links, freebooted videos, or algorithmically-boosted content designed to suck my attention away from the thing I actually wanted to look for.

I'd honestly love it if there was a better Facebook-like platform on the Fediverse. Or even not on the Fediverse, just a place where I can actually keep in touch with the people I know instead of just internet strangers. Since ditching Facebook, the internet has definitely felt like a much lonelier place for me.

if it worked, there would be no unemployment.

That would imply that 100% of unemployed people are referred to this program, or made aware of its existence at all.

It's default? When I downloaded it, I had to manually choose Gemini to be the default. It wasn't set like that for me.

Well, falling into the same traps would be awfully Sisyphean of him.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

It's kinda crazy how just by getting the camera movement, lens distortion, and exposure settings just right, you end up with a very natural-looking video. Even the game textures and animations end up looking more convincing this way. This might be a really fun way to play a stealth build.

Darknet Drug Dealers Arrested After Packages of Meth-Laced Adderall Repeatedly Returned to Sender ( www.404media.co )

Police arrested three men accused of selling thousands of pills of meth-laced “Adderall” on various darknet marketplaces and mailing them through the United States Postal Service through a fictitious business called “Professional Paper Filing Inc.” that listed a real return address of an uninvolved business. That...

Chozo ,
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

That's why you use a fake return address that doesn't exist. Allowing your product to get into real people's hands was just asking for trouble.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

I don't believe USPS can open packages without a warrant (which is why they're the preferred courier for drugs), and I don't think "multiple packages going to a wrong address" counts as probable cause. But it's been a minute since I've been involved in that end of things, so I dunno if that's still current protocol.

Chozo ,
@Chozo@kbin.social avatar

That's wild, this 2 year old video just randomly showed up in my YouTube feed the other day. Kinda interesting to see how the algorithm just seems to randomly pick a video to start recommending to people.

Either way, glad this guy's story is getting to be seen by more people!

Edit: Within 28 mins I’ve got -9 votes and nothing to answer. Think it proves my point.

The fact that you think there is a "point" to be made when you're supposed to be the one asking a question and trying to learn, shows us that you had ill intent from the start. You told on yourself with this one.

Around the house, I use these super cheap stretch bands I found on Amazon from one of those random Chinese sellers that changes names every week. It was $10 for a pack of 3. I didn't expect them to be decent quality, but I've been pleasantly surprised that none of them have broken or rattle or anything even after about a year of use.

Whenever I go out or work out, I put on the stock silicone strap. I'd like to pick up some more at some point; the quick-release mechanism is really well-done and makes changing bands on the fly super fast and easy, and I'd love to have more options for different scenarios. I just wish the official bands weren't so pricey.
