Are there federation problems with Hexbear or did they stop moderating with Yiffit?

I really only follow one Hexbear community here in Yiffit which is !libre, but I just noticed that since 4 months ago there are no updates in c/libre here in Yiffit, although if you go to the community directly from Hexbear there are new recent posts, and a lot of them....

Ah, I did not know this was a problem. The only reason I haven't upgraded yet is because it could break the current config. In any case, I'll try doing it as soon as possible.

Wander Mod ,
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

I'm sorry. Apparently the Lemmy server component went down but because the frontend was still responsive my downtime monitor didn't detect it as down.

Wander Mod ,
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

Thank you. I'll add that to the status monitor. Do you have experience in system administration? I am basically unable to take proper care of yiffit at the moment, often being out of town and I need some help :(

Wander Mod ,
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

Yes, I'll upgrade this week at latest. Sorry for keeping us back. Historically that used to be the safest decision for Lemmy, but I do realize it's been a long time.

Wander Mod ,
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

I'm working on it. Apologies for the downtime. I added enough resources to keep this from happening for another year, although I'll try to migrate to 0.19 this week.

Can't upload images: {"data":{"msg":"IO error: Os { code: 28, kind: StorageFull, message: \"No space left on device\" }","files":null},"state":"success"}

I was about to change my profile picture and I got that error, I assumed it was an occasional problem because my PC has a lot of space available so I tried to upload an image and I couldn't either because of the same error code....

Wander Mod ,
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

Thank you for letting me know. I'll have a look into it as soon as possible!

Wander Mod ,
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

It should now work again!
Apologies!

I'm still around, but busy. I'll try to enable push notifications.

Wander Mod ,
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

It can be made easily via their API, but depends on what features you're looking for. What is it that you miss from the web version?

is there a way to refederate instances just for me?

when I see that whichever instance I choose is defederated from another bunch of random instances, is it possible to have those show in my feed without making a separate profile from other instances? and can I turn them off again if I see that defederating was the right idea?

Wander ,
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

Yes, but It’s pretty hands off since 99% of security stuff is managed for you by the Lemmy software, including rate limiting. Just make sure you use a secure password and if you want put the instance behind cloudflare which is super easy to do.

Don’t buy Apple. As simple as that. You know when a company gives you the creeps? That’s how I feel about Apple.

Wander OP Mod ,
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

Thank you! I just upgraded the lemmy version. I thought it would be difficult but it was more painless than I thought.

Wander ,
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

I’d say to start with CF tunnels unless you need non-web based applications. Cloudflare tunnels require you to have a domain, though.

It has the added benefit that you have network monitoring, logging and some filtering for security that they do on top and you get to manage everything from their web interface.

be warned that the first time can be a bit confusing, but since it’s done using their web interface it’s easier than if you have a problem making wireguard work.

  1. Create a tunnel with a public hostname that will be the url to access that service. During the creation of the hostname specify you want it protected by L7 application firewall.
  2. Create a new self-hosted application in cloudflare application section and for starters use the default login email and in rules specify the list of emails that are allowed to login

you should now be able to access your application from anywhere.

Alternatively, if you have a DNS server in your home network you can add a private IP range to your tunnel. Let’s say 192.168.0.0/24. Then when you connect with their pseudo-VPN (cloudflare warp or cloudflare ONE) you can directly use your home network’s ip address from that device. If you tell your device to use a local DNS server that resolves your internal services, you’ll be able to connect to them that way.

Sorry! It now posted. Initially it wouldn’t post if it couldn’t verify an image’s artist on e621, but I now have it say a message that it could have linked to the commissioner instead.

If the image has an e6 version, it’ll use that to verify the actual artist.

Wander ,
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

Generally speaking it doesn’t matter if the artist is the uploader or not, because it’ll take the e6 artist tag. But, it’s true that especially recent images are not on e6. I’ve edited the bot so that it will always post results if it finds a furaffinity, Weasly or twitter link but state that it might be the comissioner’s account instead.

Aaaw, I’d love to attend such a con.

What are some good computer literacy resources I can point someone to?

At my work, I have an employee that struggles with several aspects of the office work parts of the job. She’s got almost no basic computer literacy, and only recently was able to create new folders consistently. She also can’t really use Excel at all....

Wander ,
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

She’ll have to get a computer and use it in her free time instead of a phone. It’s the best way

Thoughts on having a comment on every post that links to a list of local communities?

One of the harder aspects of navigation in lemmy is seeing interesting new communities on remote instances. What if there was a post here (meta) or chat that had links to all the local communities and when a new post is made to yiffit, a comment is added that links to the chat/meta post. That way if someone stumbles on something...

Wander Mod ,
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

I need to have a look at this. Thank you!

Wander Mod ,
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

That’s not a bad idea, but maybe we could have a link to !newcommunities instead? Or it could be a link to a static page with a list of all communities. I think that’s more feasible since it wouldn’t clutter the comment section with a very long post.

Joplin I think, or Trillium but that one could be less user friendly.

Oh you’re right. I wonder why that is.

Abandoned golf courses are being reclaimed by nature ( www.cnn.com )

Golf courses, despite occupying large green spaces, are not necessarily good for the environment. Land is often cleared to make way for a fairway and maintaining the pristine turf often requires a lot of water, regular mowing and the spraying of fertilizers and pesticides – none of which is good for biodiversity....

@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

Install proxmox on a computer with plenty of RAM and CPU and you’ll be able to create VMs which you can give out or rent out to anyone.

In regards to access, ipv4 is not a good idea. Especially not residential IP addresses., You should get ipv6 addresses maybe from a tunnelbroker. But anyways, first you need the server with the hypervisor (which is what you’re looking for) and then you can slowly run tests, learn and eventually figure out networking.

Btw, it might be cheaper to simply rent a server, which would solve the issue of ip addresses. OVH has cheap servers and a proxmox install wizard.

Just please don’t use it for anything sensitive until you can find someone to give a quick check up in regards to security to make sure you haven’t missed anything. Unlike a regular PC, this one is expected to receive inbound connections which has its risks.

But don’t worry about that too much now. Find an old computer or rent a server, install proxmox and start testing, playing around and learning.

Edit: chatgpt is good when wanting to learn this stuff. Especially gpt-4, but even gpt-3.5 will do. Just don’t trust it blindly as it still messes up about 20% of the time. But it’s often better than googling for tutorials since you can’t often find what you’re looking for.

Edit2: the setup I propose will allow you to divide a regular computer into 100s of virtual ones limited only by the total RAM, disk and CPU. If you only want a web server on dedicated hardware get a raspberry pi, because my proposal would be overkill. But it’s the closest to “being your own cloud provider”.

The future of selfhosted services is going to be... Android?

Wait, what?

Think about it. At some point everyone has had an old phone lying around. They are designed to be constantly connected, constantly on... and even have a battery and potentially still a SIM card to survive power outages.

We just need to make it easy to create APK packaged servers that can avoid battery-optimization kills and automatically configure an outbound tunnel like ngrok, zerotrust, etc...

The goal: hosting services like , , !? should be as easy as installing an APK and leaving an old phone connected to a spare charger / outlet.

It would be tempting to have an optimized ROM, but if self-hosting is meant to become more commonplace, installing an APK should be all that's needed. can do SSH, VPN and other tunnels without the need for root, so there should be no problem in using tunnels to publicly expose a phone/server in a secure manner.

In regards to the suitability of home-grade broadband, I believe that it should not be a huge problem at least in Europe where home connections are most often unmetered: "At the end of June 2021, 70.2% of EU homes were passed by either FTTP or cable DOCSIS
3.1 networks, i.e. those technologies currently capable of supporting gigabit speeds."

Source: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/library/broadband-coverage-europe-2021

PS. syncthing actually already has an APK and is easy to use. Although I had to sort out some battery optimization stuff, it's a good example of what should become much more commonplace.

Am curious. Are you able to run a modern windows 10 virtual machine / virtualbox vm on XP?

Wander ,
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

Yes. If your country is authoritarian use cryptocurrency such as Monero. Even Bitcoin can be much better.

The bank would know the amount, the merchant and other details even if it’s a merchant from abroad. The bank might have a duty to report certain transactions or could be forced to give out a record. Other international payment process or foreign banks will generally not refuse a request if it comes from a country government you are a citizen of.

You can use crypto to buy gift cards to shop at regular retailers. This is your safest bet if you’re concerned about a state surveillance of your transactions.
