The silent reservoir? | American Journal of Otolaryngology

SARS-CoV-2 may be hiding in middle ear!

"Our study highlights the potential effects of COVID-19 on the middle ear, suggesting a link between SARS-CoV-2 and OME onset. The virus, a significant contributor to OME, is detectable in the MEE nearly a month post-Omicron infection, indicating a potential alteration in OME treatment strategies and a risk of recurrence, emphasizing the necessity for otolaryngologist vigilance."

So uh. Best software to rip DVDs? I've tried with VLC, but it spent half an hour going through the entire 2 hour movie and then rendered only the 8 second intro to file 😬

I don't need the whole menu and all, but I need to be able to get the video, the right audio track, and the right subtitle track. I've got a bunch of old DVDs here, 10+ years old and sometimes more, that I'd like to archive before bitrot sets in.

Dear TURN OFF OPEN REGISTRATIONS! Just fot a while. Set it to require moderator approval. Captchas apparently also help. Please stop the madness

amberage ,

@jerry or better, turn off open registrations permanently. We've had our registrations closed for ages and it's worked out really well for us.

Also: turn off invite links for the time being. Closing registrations is only half the job; if bots already got in there, they could just create dozens more by abusing invite links and multiply faster than individual accounts can be created.

We are deeply disturbed and saddened by news of the death of Alexei Navalny.

Putin fears nothing more than dissent from his own people.

A grim reminder of what Putin and his regime are all about.

Let's unite in our fight to safeguard the freedom and safety of those who dare to stand up against autocracy.

amberage ,

@EU_Commission you are aware that Navalny was a dedicated nationalist whose issue was with Putin, not Putin's nationalism, yes? Who was outspoken about supporting the assault on Ukraine and the illegal occupation of Ukrainian territory by the Russian regime?

Warner Bros. decided to not release "Coyote vs. ACME", a completed film, and will write it off as a $30M. tax break despite offers from several studios to distribute it.

That kind of shit ought to be illegal. They wanted $80M for it, didn't get it, and now they're shelving it.

And since they announced back in November that they were gonna write it off for $30M and demanded more than twice that to sell it, I can't believe it wasn't their intention from the start to never release it.

Fuck that shit.

I love how governments and corporations pretend COVID is over, there are no mask mandates, no hygiene measures at workplaces anymore – but delivery services and other companies still have "due to COVID-19, deliveries may be delayed" messages up.

I haven't been very worried about AI, even though I'm a writer.

Why?

Because it takes a while for the law teams employed by the titans of old media to rumble to action, but it was always clear they were coming. These are the teams that don't sue other companies unless they're certain of winning.

And today, the New York Times sued OpenAI for several billion dollars.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/27/business/media/new-york-times-open-ai-microsoft-lawsuit.html

amberage ,
@amberage@eldritch.cafe avatar

@Impossible_PhD what I'm curious about is: how much effort is it to re-train such a generative model?

They're gonna get sued again and again, and each time it's gonna end with "remove our stuff from your model and pay us damages, or keep it in and pay us damages and licensing fees". And as far as I understand, the way these models work, it's impossible to "remove" anything because the training data isn't stored inside as discrete units, it all contributes to the biasing of these artificial neurons.

So will they have to re-train their models after each lawsuit with one source fewer? Or how is that gonna work.

hosting a blog is like the easiest thing you can "self host", and there are places that will even do it for you using FOSS software where you can move your content if you want to later (eg Wordpress, or GitLab, or etc... even GitHub is easy to move away from)

Just don't use Medium, Substack, etc. Self host your own blog, or use a hosted version of a FOSS solution!

amberage ,
@amberage@eldritch.cafe avatar

@cwebber slightly off-topic, but that makes me wonder… would it be possible to implement activitypub-powered comments on a blog that itself doesn't federate?

i.e. make a "comment" button that prompts users to compose a message that will be sent to the blog, show up there as a comment, complete with processing delete activities sent to the blog later?

I don't know enough about AP to know how that could be done without the blog post being a status object that can be replied to, but AP-powered comments on a "regular" blog would be a really cool replacement for i.e. Disqus etc

Covid: It's That Bad

This is one of the most comprehensive write-ups I've seen and probably what I will be linking to from now on.

So, we have a virus that's incredibly contagious. It kills some people immediately. For everyone else, it damages your brain. It damages your heart and blood vessels. It damages your immune system, making you vulnerable to other diseases. It shortens your telomeres. It ages you.

[…]

It's so bad the average person can't wrap their heads around it. They would rather comfort themselves with platitudes. They would rather gaslight their own family. They would rather fit in.

amberage OP ,
@amberage@eldritch.cafe avatar

That's the worst part: everything is right there, everything is known, and people look away. You can only blame the press so much (and oh boy do I blame them for creating the popular impression that being cautious equals a tin foil hat), but a large part of it is also people not wanting to grapple with that. It's literal doublethink.

amberage OP ,
@amberage@eldritch.cafe avatar

I'm sure every COVID safety advocate can relate to every once in a while asking "am I wrong, am I going insane, am I obsessed?" and having to look at the facts and numbers to reassure yourself, no, you are not, it's the rest of the world that would literally die to uphold the illusion of safety.

I wish more articles about Substack would note that it’s not just about the Nazis; Substack has also sought out and monetized some of the worst people in the right wing’s anti-LGBTQ hate movement, and helped them spread their poison much more effectively.

NYS DoH just sent a reminder that healthcare workers are required to wear a mask if they haven't gotten their flu shot.

It makes zero sense they are ignoring COVID and not requiring masks for everyone. COVID levels are high, and you can still spread it if you are vaccinated.

    @luckytran that's what's extra infuriating: everyone's so obsessed with violently enforcing their "COVID is over" narrative, mask mandates and conventions are being torn down even where they were common before COVID!

    Just a few months ago, friends told me about people refusing to wear respirators in an asbestos-contaminated building. Asbestos!

    It’s hard not to say “AI” when everybody else does too, but technically calling it AI is buying into the marketing. There is no intelligence there, and it’s not going to become sentient. It’s just statistics, and the danger they pose is primarily through the false sense of skill or fitness for purpose that people ascribe to them.

    amberage ,
    @amberage@eldritch.cafe avatar

    More redemption arcs should work with "going native", as they call it in the cop films.

    Every other film (or game or book or …) about a deep cover infiltration is concerned with that. An agent, embedded in a criminal organisation for months or years, acting as one of them 24/7, begins to lose sight of their own identity, their job as a cop, becomes attached to their fellow criminals, and eventually betrays the police and genuinely becomes a mobster.

    And more redemption arcs for villains (yes this is mostly fanfiction-relevant) should play with that. The villain, captured or defeated or whatever, pretends to reform, thinking "I'll just wait till those pesky heroes are convinced and leave me alone", and he spends so much time pretending he starts to lose sight of his "be evil at the first opportunity" plan and forms friendships with people he was only pretending to be friends with, etc. etc.

    Say what you will, but what is really the most optimistic thing about TNG, more so than the poverty-less and money-less utopia, is when somebody goes to the captain and says "this weird, unbelievable thing happened to me" and they believe them.

    Reg says he sees a creature in the transporter beam and rather than saying "Reg, you well-known anxiety haver, you're imagining things!", they take the transporter apart, twice, to find out.

    Beverly says she hears voices at night and has an overwhelming sense of deja-vu, and the captain doesn't say, "my, what an overactive imagination you have! Sleep more and do yoga!", he instructs the crew to sweep the entire ship with sensors, from top to bottom and starboard to port, until they've figured it out.

    THAT is a world I'd like to live in.
