Absurd C++ question. Say i do this:

std::string *str = get_pointer();

*str = string("Something");

If I'm not totally confused, that second line will do two things. It will call ~std::string() on *str, then it will assign the new string "something" to *str.

Is there a way to opt out of that ~? Say I really need, never mind if it's a good idea I just need, to store a str in a buffer created outside C++. When I'm done with it I'll call the destructor by hand. How do I initially populate it?

dango_ ,
@dango_@mas.to avatar

@mcc emplace new?

dango_ ,
@dango_@mas.to avatar

@mcc although isn't std::string just a container and the actual c_str underlying buffer may be separately heap allocated anyways

dango_ ,
@dango_@mas.to avatar

@mcc sorry, it's called, placement new - it just runs the constructor on the given memory

I.e.,

void *my_external_ptr = get_ptr()

string *str = new (my_external_ptr) std::string("");

A few observations from spending way too much time looking at fediverse instances and remote accounts:

The number of bird.makeup accounts is ridiculous - it makes up a huge percentage of the overall traffic.

There are a lot more narrowly focused/niche instances than I realized

There’s a lot of “ghost” instances basically on autopilot

dango_ ,
@dango_@mas.to avatar

@jerry I didn't realize there were still large instances that didn't block all the twitter bridges

dango_ ,
@dango_@mas.to avatar

@cenobyte @jerry the twitter api's death was slightly exaggerated

dango_ ,
@dango_@mas.to avatar

@cenobyte @jerry (I believe most of these services including stuff like nitter, fixtwitter, etc. use twitter's private client API and twitter doesn't care enough to stop them)

I have to wonder if, as mastodon grows, instances will end up having spam filters like email providers do today...

clearly they need something, especially with any small instance being able to send spam

Ofc internet commenters just suggest it's "using cheap SD cards", but it really seems like steam deck has some hardware issues with the SD card reader... Sad. Takes multiple full restarts to fix.

Did something, like… weird happen with TypeScript? I copied a setup that used to work into a new Node project (same tsconfig.json, "scripts": {"build": "tsc"},and"main": "build/app.js"` in the package.json, but a new version of typescript)and it's like… not… typechecking. You know, the thing TypeScript exists for. Until I put "strict":true in the tsconfig literally any code I write, no matter how incorrectly typed, was being just compiled over to build/app.js and tsc was returning success.

fun dork fact: if you spring for the management card in your UPS, and the UPS is buff enough, it'll graph input voltage. which means you can measure your utility.

dont let them tell you that you cant give your powerwall power from your high end generator when their power output looks like this:

dango_ ,
@dango_@mas.to avatar

@Viss that's just rms right?

I thought the problem with (some) inverters was the sin wave has a lot of harmonics and some (ancient, not a practical problem anymore) DC power supplies have premature wear due to those

dango_ ,
@dango_@mas.to avatar

@Viss I think one other factor too is most modern utilities will cut power rather than brown out (all of your graph looks within spec, 120+- a bit) whereas a cheap generator may not.

dango_ ,

@Viss lately the archives aren't as graceful (just json blobs) but they used to ship a single page app which would basically function like an offline view of your timeline. It was really cool and I'm sad they seemingly retired that.

Periodic reminder that the "Direct Message" / "Private Mention" function here is dangerously broken with confusing semantics.

  • Anyone mentioned anywhere in the body of a PM gets a copy.

  • "Disabling" PMs in your profile merely means YOU never see messages sent to you; senders can still send them, with no error indication.

  • Nothing is encrypted, which means administrators on any instance that processes a message can see them.

I strongly recommend using something else for private messages.

dango_ ,
@dango_@mas.to avatar

@millesimus @mattblaze @ligniform it actually does. If you name the feature the same as a commonly known feature, but fail to implement what that commonly known feature actually does, people will be surprised.

If they, e.g., called the feature something else, like group threads, or group chat or smth, that's much more accurate. (Although honestly the fact that mentioning implicitly adds to group is a huge footgun regardless)

dango_ ,
@dango_@mas.to avatar

@millesimus @mattblaze @ligniform it's like releasing a product called "bike safety helmet - will protect you from crashes" and then putting in fine print "for display only" and requiring you to cut it in half to find out it's made of cardpaper

dango_ , (edited )
@dango_@mas.to avatar

@millesimus it literally isnt

dango_ ,
@dango_@mas.to avatar

@millesimus 10/10 new people would be surprised to find that a feature, introduced as "private" mention, is actually a jank group chat which will implicitly add anyone else you mention to it
