I've never been able to get Steam Link to work properly. Always the wrong resolution if I even get a picture at all.

Ideally it would work like a game streaming service where it just renders graphics based on your client display but usually it just mirrors whatever is on the "host" system display and I got tired of trying to make it work properly.

helenslunch ,

Jitsi quality has always been really bad in my experience.

helenslunch ,

Yeah that seems to be my experience, at least with public servers. I have my own Jitsi server running on a N100 mini PC but have not tested extensively. Send me a message if you want to try it.

helenslunch ,

Interoperability with what, exactly? Facebook and Instagram? Did the EU specify a national standard protocol?

This is potentially a huge security vulnerability, which, based on recent history, would probably make them happy.

helenslunch ,

Of course Signal would need to implement the protocol

Yes, that's what I'm asking. What protocol? Is the DMA requiring anyone else to use this protocol? If so, are they required to use the WhatsApp open protocol?

This doesn't need to include any security vulnerabilities.

Of course there doesn't need to be but someone has to decide which protocol to use, and if it's up to the EU it is most likely an insecure one, considering how they tried to end encrypted chats altogether.

helenslunch ,

Quite the opposite

helenslunch ,

...why would they do that? Are they fond of uploading all their metadata to Zuck?

helenslunch ,

All of that said, in the recent Wired interview one of the WhatsApp engineering leads suggested opening and documenting the client-server API for WhatsApp rather than implementing a different protocol.

So now they collect metadata from users of other messaging apps?

helenslunch ,

Have to strongly disagree. Will probably collect the same as any other Android phone but without having manufacturer (Samsung, Huawei or whatever) malware pre-installed and unremovable.

helenslunch ,

Did they solve the server issues yet? Because if so I'm ready to buy this.

helenslunch ,

Good to know. I heard they increased server capacity.

helenslunch ,

Because different locations make sense in different situations. In the case of 99% of drivers they'll be plugging in at home and having them on the left side means they don't have to walk around the car to plug in.

helenslunch ,

You have to do what you can. I think a lot of people would rather see that but that's a massive investment you have to convince large masses of people to agree to pay for, which is historically futile. This approach requires zero investment from taxpayers.

helenslunch ,

In Europe everyone just carries a cable. It helps to prevent theft, damage and clutter.

I hope this is what they're actually referring to when they say "charger".

Realistically I'd like to see more wireless chargers.

helenslunch ,

I believe their expenses were public also. Basically a public financial record.

helenslunch ,

the damn thing gets 10 better mpg than a Subaru Outback...

This is often the problem with hybrids. You'll really drive it long enough for it to make sense.

I've done the math on several different models and assuming your drive as much as the typical American it can take 10+ years.

helenslunch ,

Not necessarily. Tesla still has massive profit margins on every model. They have a lot of wiggle room on price if competition ever arrives.

[SOLVED] Trying to put Linux mint on desktop (lemmy.zip)

Hello, I am trying to boot and install Linux mint onto a desktop Intel CPU with Nvidia gpu and I have been sitting here (notice the little white line)for 20+ minutes now. I can boot into compatibility mode and did that successfully and installed but I am not sure if I installed a different version since I booted into...

helenslunch ,

I went through this same thing with Ubuntu. It's generally just a bad idea to use Nvidia with Linux. It makes everything more difficult.

helenslunch ,

I've seen L1Techs recommend Solidigm several times now. These are also often the cheapest drives around. If I were in the market I'd be having a close look at them.

helenslunch ,

Someone mentioned losslesscut last time this was asked.

helenslunch ,

The most noob-friendly is going to CapCut, absolutely no question about it. But it's owned by the CCP so I cannot recommend.

helenslunch ,

It has no client at all, it runs in the browser.

helenslunch ,

Have you tried turning it off and back on again?

helenslunch ,

They could just as well "shrinkflate" that way. Prices stay the same at peak hours (against inflation, meaning they're still going up) while off-peak hours get a "discount" (prices stay roughly the same).

helenslunch ,

Ioniq*

helenslunch ,

Still can't buy them yet. No telling if Volvo will do what so many have done at this point and simply raise the price later.

US Army is slashing thousands of posts in major revamp to prepare for future wars (apnews.com)

The U.S. Army is slashing the size of its force by about 24,000, or almost 5%, and restructuring to be better able to fight the next major war, as the service struggles with recruiting shortfalls that made it impossible to bring in enough soldiers to fill all the jobs....

helenslunch ,

I'd like to believe that decreased nationalism is responsible for the decrease in sign-ups but I don't know.

helenslunch ,

Looks like Zorin except the windows aren't 3D

helenslunch ,

This isn't 2009 when the cool kids are sharing earbuds

Even if they were they still wouldn't sell, because they're using earbuds LOL

helenslunch ,

The Moto phones are shockingly good value

helenslunch ,

Being able to use your phone as a desktop has never happened beyond Samsung's DeX for reasons I can't comprehend

Yeah I would love to have something like this. Especially considering Android is generally more secure than Windows and MacOS due to sandboxing.

helenslunch ,

She was beaten unconscious, then dropped dead the next day. Of course it's the cause of death, and I don't believe anyone who says otherwise.

helenslunch ,

Her mother referred to her as she. But I'm sure you know better.

helenslunch ,

Too bad that didn't come from the person themself.

helenslunch ,

Forgive me if I believe a video recording of their mother over some (probably) shitty journalist.

helenslunch ,

I only know Zelle as the scammer's app of choice.

How does Zelle make money?

helenslunch ,

They charge the vendor/bank for the service.

According to my research, they do not.

That's the whole reason it was put forward in the first place.

helenslunch ,

Plenty of restaurants bring you a QR code on the check.

Live in a big city and I've never noticed.

I’d much prefer to do that than to hand my card off to a stranger to do god-knows-what with for 5-10 minutes in the back room.

Sure if they have it. Although some places have tap to pay now.

helenslunch ,

Doesn't seem like a bad idea but Steam Deck + Xreal Air is what I would (and did) choose over something like that. That way I have the option of using the glasses but they're not strictly necessary.

Also the 8840HS makes the same mistake as other handhelds with almost zero regard to battery life.

Tumblr and Wordpress to Sell Users’ Data to Train AI Tools (www.404media.co)

this could not be timed worse for Tumblr which is in huge hot water with its userbase already for its CEO breaking his sabbatical to ban a prominent trans user for allegedly threatening him (in a cartoonish manner), and then spending a week personally justifying it increasingly wildly across several platforms. the rumors had...

helenslunch ,

Monthly Active Users (MAU) is generally the standard measurement of success. Facebook is the leader by a longshot with a whopping 3 b-b-billion MAU. Thats nearly half the planet.

helenslunch ,

Yeah they all want to cram random "suggestions" into your feed which is honestly worse than the ads.

helenslunch ,

It's the inevitable result of users who refuse to abandon their favorite platforms.

helenslunch ,

Haha I love seeing celebrities in movies and TV but yeah, anywhere else, the extreme celebrity-worship in this country just depresses the fuck outta me.

helenslunch OP ,

Whoops, edited the headline, thanks
