Cooperative overlap (i.e.,
enthusiastic autistic interrupting)

"One thing many autistics frequently do is use a conversation style called cooperative overlap. More often than not, during the interview of my autism assessments, the other person will interrupt me with an excited statement about something I am talking about—if they are autistic. And inevitably, they apologize. But I always tell them, it is fine—it is my way of talking too! We are cooperative overlappers, a term introduced in the book Conversational Style: Analyzing Talk Among Friends (1984) by sociolinguist Deborah Tannen."

Can anyone point to a good resource on how to be a better parent to an autistic adult?

I really feel like I'm swimming in circles and I'm not always sure I'm being the advocate and support that she needs me to be.

Any help from other parents of autistic adults is welcome. If you're not autistic or the parent of someone who is, please don't comment.

Thank you, and please boost for reach.

@Mrfunkedude I'm here if you need anything. Just post in my DMs.
Also, if you're in CA, get her into your local Regional Center. Theyre a good resource and they'll diagnose (it was free for my son when he was little) & once they're a Regional Center client, SSDI cannot turn them down.
I reccomend the book Autism & Enzymes by Karen DeFelice (sp?) for where to start with emotional regulation, but there's more as well.

Restaurants in America are in crisis because they can't hire and retain qualified workers. To stave off oblivion, restaurateurs are exploring options like replacing tipping with mandatory service fees, reducing waitstaff in favor of counter ordering, and dynamic pricing, where you pay more or less according to demand. Business Insider's food reporter Corey Mintz delves into the issues, concluding: "The fundamental problem is that restaurants have long mistreated their workers. So when many veteran employees had a chance to get out of the industry during the pandemic, they did." Which of these solutions would you be prepared to swallow?

@luckytran Measles shots wear out over time. If you're an older adult, it might be time to get a booster shot. Covid also wipes out immunity, so if you've had it, get your boosters. Measles is extremely contagious (as contagious as the last strain of Covid), so were probably going to see more and more measles outbreaks soon.

Okay, I'm thinking about gift giving today. A little backstory about why:

Every year my Father-in-law attempts to get my Mother-in-law a gift. She is a bit of a shopper, and is notoriously difficult to shop for. Every year he gets her something he guesses a woman would like (perfume, sweater, jewelry), and every year she doesn't really like it, and ends up begrudgingly using it or returns it. They have been married over 30 years, and seem to have a pretty good marriage otherwise. It's like she wants him to magically understand what she wants, and he is sort of equally bad at the whole thing too. I will never understand why they don't just have a conversation about this. Just for extra fun, she is the most bizarre gift giver, also, to the point that it has become an annual tradition that I show my friends what she got us. A small list of things we have gotten:

A couch cover with grapes on it
    A sexy nightgown
A painting of the house they live in
A gourd painted to look like a cat eating a bird
A package of tea that I would have absolutely loved, stuffed with cheap tea bags
    Children's Lego sets
    Toy trains
Underwear that didn't fit either of us
A wooden board covered in seashells that is supposed to hold a curling iron
    A waterproof bed cover

I could go on and on. Just to clarify this doesn't bother me or my husband at all, we actually get a kick out of the weirdness. I don't personally care about presents much, I'm more of an experiences person.

SO, if you've managed to get this far, how do you feel about gift giving/getting? Feel free to elaborate and give examples!

@RickiTarr I’m a very pick person about what I like. I have a very clear and specific aesthetic that I go for. High quality, simple, practical and preferably in shades of blue. But my absolute favorite gift was a huge, cheaply made tea pot that was way too thin to keep the tea warm. It was in the shape of 2 gorillas, in traditional Hawaiian dress, dancing the Tango! The spout was where their hands stuck out & the handle was a banana! It’s so ugly! When I opened the box, I laughed for an hour!!!

🇺🇸 US: COVID cases in the US have risen 50% in 4 weeks.

Dr. Michael Hoerger of Tulane University, who has been modeling the spread of COVID-19 using the Biobot data, noted on Monday that levels of wastewater now correlate with approximately 886,000 daily infections, or an average of more than 6 million infections in just one week.

In Dr. Hoerger’s forecast, the figure for daily infections could reach 1.5 million during the Christmas break, when the next massive wave of travelers will take to the air or roads. He warns that in classrooms, lecture halls, restaurants, and other crowded indoor spaces, the chance of encountering someone actively infected with COVID-19 is essentially a flip of the coin.

With masking practically nonexistent and COVID vaccination rates abysmal, combined with the impacts of influenza, RSV, and other viral and bacterial pathogens, the impact on health systems could soon become catastrophic.
