Yeah this is a normal phrase in British English too. Today you learned!

Most "pranks" are just a) terribly unfunny, b) actually bullying by another name, or c) both.

If we could just keep the rare good ones I'd be all for it, but alas!

@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

I'm sure anyone reading this in the UK is already aware of MSE but just in case: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/savings-accounts-best-interest/#easyaccess

A quick glance suggests most of those really high ones are time-limited bonus offers, but other places are doing quite high interest in general e.g. Marcus is paying 4.75%.

thegiddystitcher ,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

Making things, mostly.

Lots of crafts like knitting, crochet, cross stitch, sewing, felting, origami, faffing about with clay, etc etc. And gamedev which I basically think of as the same sort of hobby because it's just making a different sort of thing.

Making YouTube videos about all of the above, in defiance of the algorithm gods.

Reading any and all scifi I can get my hands on, plus the Discworld series just over and over again endlessly on a loop.

Also the amount of time I spend on Mastodon and Lemmy probably means it counts as a rather lame hobby at this point...

thegiddystitcher ,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

3d printing is useful for almost any hobby if you try hard enough!

We got really into making handmade dice for a while there, and used our resin printer to make custom master dice with our logo on. And I've used it to print out useful bits and bobs for cross stitch too. Someone I follow on Mastodon 3d printed a sock knitting machine, that was very cool.

Truly 3d printing is the hobby that keeps giving!

thegiddystitcher ,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

Yeah it's the same sort of challenge and satisfaction at a solution, completely agree!

thegiddystitcher ,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

I think we all do that a bit, tbh. But when I get to the "rip it" stage I just put it in a timeout box instead, work on a new thing, then usually the desire to get back to the original thing will return eventually! If it really doesn't I'll also frog but that's relatively rare.

Bonus of having so many craft hobbies I guess, there's always some other WIP to switch focus to!

This time last year, the night before our wedding, we stayed at a cheap hotel 15 minutes away from home, ate pizza in the room and watched Top of the Pops with Mastodon. So tonight to celebrate the fact that we somehow survived the year we'll be staying in a cheap hotel 15 minutes away from home, eating pizza in the room and watching Top of the Pops with Mastodon.

Also despite me being middle aged now, my mam and grandma sent us a ton of chocolate. So that's the rest of the weekend accounted for.

Happy Easter everyone!

Ngl that damn streak took over my life at one point, I was over 1000 days and climbing. Decided one day to just...let it go on purpose. To no longer be caged by the tyranny of the owl.

Highly recommend it, the sense of freedom is unreal.

thegiddystitcher ,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

Kept it going for a while, making sure to take a day off once a month to avoid building another stressful streak. But I kinda got to the end of its usefulness and wandered off to other things.

Just started learning Spanish and I thought about firing it up again but the app is such a mess these days I actually can't face it.

Edit: Remember getting rid of the streak doesn't actually lose your "progress" in learning the language, which is presumably the important part. It's just a meaningless number. You can do it!

thegiddystitcher ,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

Exactly!

thegiddystitcher ,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

It probably depends on which language you're learning and whether there's a good deck available but I've moved onto flashcards with Anki.

The main problem with Duo (before all of its current problems) used to be that it didn't really give much context unless you were on the full website and clicked through to read the grammar rules, but the card deck I'm using for basic Spanish has all of that built in and visible from the start so it's been a good foundation on the language.

I've also heard excellent things about something called the "pimsleur" method but that seems expensive to access through official means. I'm sure there are other ways to try it out, of course...

Hah, don't worry I don't do this for everything! But I need this one finished by a certain date, and having the hard numbers is very motivational :D

thegiddystitcher OP Mod ,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

Most of the time I'm with you, luckily I've got plenty other projects on the go without a time constraint!

thegiddystitcher OP Mod ,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

Yes, you understand! Sometimes I just need to see the numbers 😅

thegiddystitcher OP Mod ,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

Yes! Knowing your way round a spreaddie is so useful for working out stitch counts and especially if you're designing something from scratch.

I have a terrible habit of knitting things at an entirely different gauge to the pattern and needing to change up stitch counts accordingly so it's definitely a handy skill to fall back on 😅

I know it's a different culture around tech everywhere. But where I am, this doesn't seem like an unpopular opinion so much as an accepted thing. People who came to the internet quite late tend to go iPhone because it feels simpler and keeps them safer and that seems fine to me. Good that there's an option for everyone.

Improve Instance representation on the join-lemmy.org website

After having spent some time on Lemmy and learning of the intricacies of the different Lemmy instances, I think the landing page for the Lemmyverse could do with some streamlining. I remember that back when I joined, the only information I used to decide on an instance to join was the user count, the signup policy and the...

thegiddystitcher ,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

Unfortunately that link doesn't help much. Currently among the list of "recommended instances" (followed by a claim that it "doesn't matter" which of these you choose) are a French-speaking instance, a crypto instance, and an anime instance. Hardly welcoming places for your average person, unless you happen to be a French crypto bro looking for porn in which case you are definitely well catered for.

OP might not have all the details worked out but their point is a good one, and it's an issue on Mastodon as well. It's all well and good having a one-liner description about each instance but it can be quite a trawl to find the actual important info you need to make a decision.

Am i missing out on anything other than porn by disabling NSFW on lemmy ?

Like am i missing out on big boy talk, gore, news etc that are adult ? Lemmy should seriously get a second filter like one that filters porn and the other that filters the rest if that is the case . Anyway what do you think ? Should news etc. be put behind nsfw ? I know i am straying far off the primary question but i am just...

Settings > Blocks, instance blocks are at the bottom so if you already have a long block list you might have missed it down there.

Does Reddit shadowban mentions of Lemmy?

In the months since I deleted my Reddit accounts and joined Lemmy, the lack of user base growth has made it clear that we need some users to stay on Reddit as a means of shepherding more users over on an ongoing basis. Otherwise, Reddit simply got what it wanted: less users who make a fuss about how it manages its platform...

A couple of the apps do have this "multi community" feature, if you're a mobile user. Summit definitely does, Raccoon (the one I'm replying from now) technically does but it's pretty broken so I'm hoping that gets looked at soon. And tbh maybe more of them do now, it's been a while since I checked!

The birds here are really confused lately and have just been singing all night without a break, it's driving me crazy.

Not only is "Seinfeld" vastly overrated, any claim that it pioneered the concept of "a show about nothing" is ridiculous and imbecilic.

First of all, yeah, come at me. "Seinfeld" is only kinda-sorta funny, at best. Seinfeld himself is really not funny at all. His act is perpetually stuck between the oldschool, early 1950s-style, cigar-waving "hyuk-hyuk, get a load of all my jokes about women drivers" comedians and the post-Lenny Bruce era, where everything just...

Yeah I'm trying to remember how we used to do it (the last time I went through a normal checkout with a full shop was probably 10 years ago) and this seems right.

Gotta have the heavy stuff handy so you can put it straight into the bottom of the bags. Anything else is wasting time!

You've had some well-meaning but ultimately not quite accurate answers in this thread so just to clarify:

You can follow, post to and interact with Lemmy communities from Mastodon, because they're treated the same way as a "group" on Mastodon in general.

You can NOT follow and interact with Mastodon users from Lemmy, because Mastodon accounts are individual "users" and Lemmy doesn't have the concept of following and interacting with users, only with communities. If Lemmy ever does add a feature to let us follow other users, then in theory following Mastodon users will also become possible.

As a European, I'd read about this phenomenon and assumed it was just a sort of vaguely reminiscent hint of a taste. Because surely nobody would be eating it if it tasted strongly of vomit.

Was given a free sample of Hershey's in Chicago once. Didn't taste of anything at all it was just weird and waxy. So much for that!

Yeah I made it maybe halfway down the street before the taste kicked in. For any other non-US folks who think it's an exaggeration, it is not. Literally tasted like I'd thrown up in my mouth, not just a bit like it but literally like vomit.

My minor life advice is do not accept handouts of Hershey's chocolate!
