For the few who want to know the show and the actor, it's "Monsieur Spade," an AMC produced take on Sam Spade post-America, retired and living in France. I think it's really well done, and Clive Owen does a great job of playing San Spade but...I REALLY want to replace his face and voice with Bogart's....
This question was posted with a Wikipedia link. I didn't read it, but let's assume it didn't answer the poster's question.
Now I see in the comments a people saying "we know a lot" (but not Wikipedia I guess) or "it's just what Americans do" or "we got some good laws out of it". It just sounds like "move along, move along" to me.
Nobody answered the question. I don't know the answer, but to say that a person who has never killed anyone before then planned and executed the biggest mass shooting in American history (and that's saying something!) and we shouldn't CARE about motive is just weird.
What makes someone arm themselves and go to a movie theater or an elementary school or a concert should be damned important to a society that cares about mental health and the safety of its citizens. It's SO EASY to say "evil" and put it in the past, especially when the perpetrator is dead. It's much harder to think about how to prevent the next one. Sure, they use guns. But then it's knives. Or hammers. Slower you say? Well then how about sarin gas? Mail bombs? Potassium cyanide in Tylenol? Letters containing ricin?
We need to know more about the psychology of the mass killer. We act like saying "evil" is good enough. Are we all religious now? There's devils out there? Or are they people, people with problems that never got recognized, until it was too late?
I did what you said, sorting by "top," and I think you're doing a lot of projecting because I do not read anything there that could be an answer to the question
Second, I read your response, and I'm confused. Are you proposing redistribution of wealth and veganism as a solution to mass killings? If not, I guess I didn't understand your answer.
So, that kinda makes sense to you? Like, you can "get it," why someone would load up and kill a bunch of people indiscriminately?
Because I can't. I could go vengeance on someone who hurt my family. I'm sure I could kill in self-defense, or to protect my family.
But to just go somewhere prepared to kill a bunch of people I don't know? Who never had any contact with me or my life?
"Take out their frustrations on society?" I really hope you are just hyped up or talking out your ass or something. I'm any case, please talk to someone competent about this, preferably a licensed therapist.
I had just gotten checked out on my first radar position and I was sitting down for my first time working traffic by myself. The next thing I know I get handed off the Concord, which was still flying back then, and I had never worked a Concord before. It's speed is pegged out at 999 knots and I know it's going way faster than that. I look over at the strip and there's a note on it that says the Queen of England is on board, flying in to visit Florida.
My first day, the Concord, and the Queen. I turn around, nervous as hell, and shout to the guys behind me, a bunch of crusty veterans who are mostly ex-Vietnam helicopter pilots hired when the strike happened, "Hey I'm over here working the Concord with the Queen of England on it. What do I do?"
Just as easy as pie one of the guys looks back at me and says "Make her number one."
Very cool. I love that it exists, I love humanity that some of us are capable of understanding, or even generating such things, but wow. Some people are a lot smarter than me.
Agreed. I think "Flowers for Algernon" hit me hard. And I had an experience in college where I accidentally took a philosophy class called "Critical Theory Since Plato" when I first realized that I'm not very smart, just a little above average, and some people live life on a while different level than I do.
And don't get me started on "Electromechanical Wave Theory," a book I bought from Goodwill. I wanted to learn more about that, but I think it was written by aliens.
Creating backstories, characterizations, etc etc etc. All that stuff they tell you to do in novel writing class that sometimes you might do, or if you're me you don't.
The AI likes to just start writing narratively, taking on the job of crafting words. That's not what I'M looking for. I want a sounding board to bounce ideas off, suggest alternative directions, possible motives, help me brainstorm.
Point two has always been a problem for me, because they tell me I'm autistic. All I know is I have some coping mechanisms I've had to use over the years. It wasn't really a thing when I was a kid. But I don't see alternatives very well. So having an outside entity suggest things that hadn't occurred to me gives me more choice in plot lines and decision points. I write ok alone. But I'm excited to see what ai can help me do.
I've been doing that for 40+ years. I just want to try using AI as a partner to bounce ideas back and forth. As I explained in another post, I have trouble generating alternatives once I've created an Idea. It's nice to have a means to get outside myself.
I intend to do the writing, it's the planning and plotting I'm using AI for.
This is an honest question. In the US we probably put down thousands of household pets each month. Many of them have their owners right there beside them holding their paw. It isn't tramatic for the pet or the owner.
How can it be this difficult for us to humanely execute a human?
Someone recently told me that they sometimes feel gaslighted around me because I effortlessly make them question their beliefs and feelings. Hearing that didn't sit well with me, especially since I've been pondering the question in the title for quite some time....
You can spend money but I don't. Everything seems to be coming to me pretty quickly F2P. They have a great in game communications system that keeps you from having to use discord to coordinate or socialize. It also has an amazing translation system that allows people from all languages to work together.
It has a LOT to do at first but then just as you get tired it backs WAY off and you have a casual game where you could easily start a second account if you wanted.
No lying, I have in the past. I spent $5 here and there on a game I played for about two years. The total was certainly under $50. I have known people to spend a lot though.
Sad story, I stopped playing that game because I betrayed my long-time league by using a hacked game and getting banned from the game. They had invested a lot of trust in me and given me leadership over their original team. I wanted to be like them, but I didn't have the skill, so I cheated. I lost that team for them forever. I loved those guys, I really did, what a great time and a great social outlet. I even met one of them for lunch. Real friends online.

So far I think "Uptown Funk", "Blinding Lights", and "Old Town Road". That doesn't mean I love those songs. It means I think they answer the question. I know you may love "Irony x3" by Zigbones. But they ain't it....
That's kind of the question that's being posed. We thought we knew what we wanted until we found out that wasn't it. The Turing test ended up being a bust. So what exactly are we looking for?
I certainly think there's a lack of PUBLIC philosophy. When Nihilism or Existentialism were happening, fiction was written from those perspectives, movies were made, etc.
Whatever is happening in philosophy right now is unknown to me, and I'm guessing most people. I don't believe there are any bestsellers or blockbusters making it popular.
Without thinking about thinking we're kind of drifting when it comes to what we expect consciousness to be.
How easy is deepfake now? I just watched a show and I want to change the actor to an old timey one. NOT PORN. Just a cool show I think would be suited to this actor and I can't get it out of my head.

Math people: would a ship that is 1/4 slower but can complete a 180° turn 1/4 faster escape its pursuer?
I'm sure pirates knew the answer. Probably fighter pilots as well.
I'm increasingly unhappy with the limits on AI text generation and I have heard that it's not that hard to do it on a laptop oneself. What is the best path forward?

Since the Turing Test seems NOT to be an accurate way to check for true AI, what is? What's will be the indicator that tells us it's arrived? I can't imagine; everything seems falsifiable.
Edit: After reading the discussion, I figured I'd let GPT4 speak for itself:...
