You keep them where they are. Benefits are:

Agronomists describe the benefits to yield in rotated crops as "The Rotation Effect". There are many benefits of rotation systems. The factors related to the increase are broadly due to alleviation of the negative factors of monoculture cropping systems. Specifically, improved nutrition; pest, pathogen, and weed stress reduction; and improved soil structure have been found in some cases to be correlated to beneficial rotation effects.

Other benefits include reduced production cost. Overall financial risks are more widely distributed over more diverse production of crops and/or livestock. Less reliance is placed on purchased inputs and over time crops can maintain production goals with fewer inputs. This in tandem with greater short and long term yields makes rotation a powerful tool for improving agricultural systems.

Person 2: Well, so far today I lost my good pen and then I spilled coffee on my left shoe.

[Person 1 looks visibly upset.]
Person 2: What?

Person 1: You're supposed to just say "Good, how are you?." and I say “Good.” and we go on with our days.
Person 2: But what if I'm not good?

Person 1: I don't need to know about it!
Person 2: Then maybe don't ask!

In the UK at least, 'you alright?', shortened to 'right?' is just used as a greeting. In the same way that 'how are you doing' got shortened to 'howdy'. It's just another form of greeting or pleasantry.

If you're actually interested how someone is, you'll ask without the contraction ('are you alright?'), and with a different intonation.

I think that's a fairly reasonable way of doing conversation; I don't have a problem with it.

chumbalumber ,

I think there's some 'truth' to it in some ways. Dolly acknowledges that she plays a lot with femininity and feminine expectations, and that 'look' she has is a costume in many ways. She doesn't dress like that when she's out incognito.

In the same way drag is a costumed examination of what makes someone look 'like a woman', subverting in some ways and embracing in others

I'm gonna go for about 1600-1800 lichess, just because Nh5 from black feels a bit of a nothing move, and while 15. Rad1 for white gives a discovered attack with the pawn recapture, it gives an isolated pawn and the queen can just move.

It's pretty weird that you hold up the fucking lib Dems as your party of radical revolution.

The fact of the matter is that we are never going to get a radical left government, regardless of the voting system. Unless you're spending time in an ivory tower of academia, you will know that the majority of people in this country are centrists of some flavour. Corbyn got massacred at the polls, and he was Labour leader. Going back you've got Foot.

The best we've ever had it is when Atlee, an ex army major who practically ran the home war effort, couched left wing reforms (foundation of the welfare state, nationalisation of coal and rail) as nationalistic. That's how we get these things through. You're never going to change the minds of British people by bombing.

If you're of an anarchist mindset, then it's far more beneficial to vote for harm reduction one day per four years, and organise in parallel outside that

chumbalumber ,

Fair enough; I got the wrong end of the stick. I apologise.

I think the best case for the argument is also around in the UK, which is that reform UK (which, for those abroad, is our resident right wing nutjob party) has put electoral pressure on the party and pulled them to the right, and the same thing has happened with the greens on the left.

That being said, I think the best time to cast that vote is during local elections (or MEPs back when we were still in Europe) where there's something closer to proportional representation, or when you don't live in a swing seat. For those in the US who are in safe republican seats, I'd agree that 3rd party is a pretty good way to get your voice heard. In knife edge places, I'd argue for tactical voting, but equally it's not my country.

WRT anarchism: it's a philosophy I think we should implement a lot of concepts from (mutual aid, parallel organisation). The reason I mentioned it was that some have the view that we shouldn't vote full stop; I am of the view that voting is not the be all and end all -- vote tactically, be that for harm reduction if your vote is likely to count significantly, or third party if it won't, and then go and advocate for your causes in the other days of the four year election cycle.

I disagree with your sentiment, and think the examples work. If your aim was to run a coffee shop forever and you quit, then yes you have failed. If, on the other hand, your aim is to enjoy and have the experience of running a coffee shop, then doing so for two years and stopping is a success. Similarly with a relationship. You can have succeeded in having a mutually fulfilling relationship that you both have happy memories from, even if you then grow apart. It succeeded in its aims of spending time enjoying being a relationship.

chumbalumber ,

Yeah, agreed.

I made falafel and lentil flat bread ( lemmy.ca )

I made baked falafel with red lentil flat bread for the wrap. I baked them just because it's easier then frying all these for a family but, still they are delicious. The lentil wraps are great with it as well. Honestly, 7-10 years ago if you told me that some of my favorite meals to make would be plant based.... I'd chuckle and...

Could you give the recipe for baked falafel? I hate deep frying just cos there's so much oil to deal with :)

    DMHS?

    chumbalumber ,

I'd make the point that this is a comic. You wouldn't say that in real life, which is why the comic works. It's jarring, and the bluntness forces reflection.

    chumbalumber ,

    Ah, thanks

    chumbalumber ,

No one is going to behave like that in reality. That was the point of my comment. The artist wouldn't enter this scenario in person.

I think people do need to learn that lesson. I grew up as a man, and never thought twice about cycling home after dark, or going on a date. If asked I would be able to tell you that women do in fact have it worse when it comes to experiencing violence, but it didn't crop up as a consideration in my day-to-day.

I've since had a small amount of the experience women go through after cross-dressing on queer nights out. Presenting femme gets you treated very differently, and this comic's purpose is to present you with an in-your-face reminder. It is a piece of art; it's not supposed to be an accurate reflection of reality.

James Hetfield made a statement that he was happy for Metallica music to be used for torture in Guantanamo bay.

    chumbalumber ,

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-40090809

    https://www.spiegel.de/international/world/the-pain-of-listening-using-music-as-a-weapon-at-guantanamo-a-672177.html

Metallica singer James Hetfield has said he is proud that his music is used against enemies of the US

Metallica's Enter Sandman had became a particular favourite at the height of the War on Terror, when US interrogators admitted using music to break the resistance of captives in Iraq. The goal was to deprive them of sleep and offend their cultural sensibilities.

Unco-operative prisoners were exposed to children's TV music from Sesame Street, and the purple singing dinosaur Barney.

Sergeant Mark Hadsell of the Psychological Operations Company (Psy Ops) told Newsweek magazine: "These people haven't heard heavy metal. They can't take it.

"If you play it for 24 hours, your brain and body functions start to slide, your train of thought slows down and your will is broken. That's when we come in and talk to them."

    chumbalumber ,

I don't know what to tell you; the same site has Hetfield making a statement that's pretty to the contrary:

    https://blabbermouth.net/news/james-hetfield-is-honored-metallica-music-was-used-by-us-military-to-help-us-stay-safe

Asked by Thrasher magazine in a recent interview if he is offended at all by the CIA's use of METALLICA's music to torture prisoners, Hetfield said: "Ha! We've tortured people with it for a long time. A lot longer than the CIA."

He continued: "I've got nothing to say about that, really. I'm honored my country is using something to help us stay safe, if they are. But then again, once the music is out, I don't have control over that. Just like how someone's giving it away online. They're using it to do what they do.

So really he couldn't give a shit.

In the article you linked, it sounds like Metallica's PR people did the asking; the interview with Ulrich is pretty equivocal:

With the debate over the military and CIA's use of torture front and center in the news lately, Maddow also asked Ulrich how he felt about METALLICA's music being used to psychologically torture prisoners of war. "There is a lot of METALLICA music that's helping a lot of scared 18-, 19- and 20-year-old kids out there who are out on the front lines and who are doing a hell of a job on behalf of you and me and the rest of us," he said. "But obviously when you hear stories like the one you're telling, it all seems so bizarre and so strange that METALLICA's music, which generally sort of facilitates bringing people together, is used in these bizarre circumstances. It's certainly not something that we in any way advocate or condone."

So not going to advocate or condone the use of their music in torture.

    chumbalumber ,

It reminds me of the discourse around 'x companies are the cause of x% of global emissions'.

Yes, that's true, but they're doing so to meet a demand. We can (and should) take action to regulate these companies and force more environmentally friendly methods of production, but that will have ramifications on costs. Ultimately the most efficient way may be to reduce demand for some goods and services.

I work as a transport planner, for instance, and a huge number of emissions come from cars, but also the built environment (building and maintaining transport infrastructure). If we're going to be serious about dropping emissions, we need to fundamentally change the way we plan and build transport networks, including potentially cutting demand, one way or another.

All this against a backdrop of an incredibly unequitable transport infrastructure; if you hike costs then you knacker the ability of disadvantaged groups to get around for work, but also pleasure. Poor people deserve to be able to go on holiday too.

My general point is that for every smartarse post that says "climate change is easy to stop, all we need to do is cut the head off the snake" neglects to recognise that this isn't a snake of a problem; it's a hydra.

(Blech, melodramatic, but it does wind me up).
