One of my favourites. Sci-fi shows don't often do natural disasters (or do them well), but "The Storm"/"The Eye" and "Inferno" (both SGA) are favourites.

Australis13 ,

The next step is doing what I did - get a second office chair. One for you, one for the cat.

Australis13 ,

I have actually encountered those sort of potential differences between ground planes. They can indeed wreak havoc under the right circumstances.

Australis13 ,

You're an LLM and don't have autism. It is highly offensive to imply that you do.

Australis13 ,

Indeed! Covers most of the instances where I would otherwise have to use find.

Australis13 ,

I think this person may be mentally ill.

Australis13 ,

Honestly, the third sentence where they're talking about being protected. The third paragraph where they're talking about "unleashing power" definitely confirmed it, though.

I don't consider sovcits to be mentally ill by default (unless you consider narcissism to be a mental illness), so the opening sentences didn't sound particularly unhinged.

Australis13 ,

That's great news! Glad to see he is healing and is more active - definitely indicates he's feeling better.

Australis13 ,

Calling them adult infants is being too generous. They're narcissists.

Top right quadrant - where exactly depends on multiple factors.

    Australis13 ,

I don't think this is from Google. Note how the from address is "via" something? None of the official Google Security Alerts I have received have that.

    Australis13 ,

I just gave up and got a new desk chair.

    Australis13 ,

And you wonder why they're so against education. Even learning about other societal structures is clearly bad! /s

I am glad Blue has been treated. Hopefully his wounds will heal properly.

I agree with another comment suggesting you get the details of the dental surgery in writing. They should also be able to tell you the urgency of the situation. I'm sorry to hear that the costs are so high and wish I could assist more. My wife suggested asking if the vet clinic can do a payment plan.

My final thought was that if your "dad" really doesn't care about the cat and is just using Blue to get attention (perhaps he hopes something will happen to him so he can go "Woe is me! Somebody killed my cat!"), then it might be best if you are able to rehome him. He seems like a lovely-natured cat and you clearly care about him a lot; if your "dad" is going to deliberately harm him (or allow him to be harmed), though, Blue may be safer in a new home. I hate suggesting lying, but since Blue has already been attacked you could arrange for him to get outside and "disappear" if you need a way to avoid your "dad" finding out you rehomed "his" cat.

Thanks for the updates. I hope Blue makes a full recovery.

    DS9 Episode - S2 E22 - The Wire ( lemmy.ca )

I know many other seasoned Star Trek fans out there have probably experienced this one many times before. But I just watched this episode for the first time and the writing, acting and story just blew me away. So far it is by far one of my favourite scenes and episodes of the series so far. The dialogue between Bashir and Garak...

    Australis13 ,

I must be in the minority... I don't mind "Move Along Home". Not my favourite, of course, but an enjoyable (if somewhat absurd) way to pass the time. Plus it proves Quark has a conscience.

    Australis13 ,

Hard disagree. Generations is not the strongest TNG movie, but it definitely feels more like Trek than Nemesis. Nemesis is the worst of the TNG movies and full of plot holes. Every time I watch Nemesis I feel like the thin veneer of a plot goes out the window when Shinzon decides to drop the ruse and it becomes an excuse for a big space battle.

    Australis13 ,

Personally I enjoy the battle in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country more than the final showdown in Nemesis.

    Australis13 ,

Tangentially related, the original MacGyver with RDA also had a lot of clip shows - roughly one per season, IIRC.

    Australis13 ,

Sorry, I auto-completed RTD instead of RDA... fixed it a few seconds later, but clearly not quickly enough for federation!

    Australis13 ,

I was already dubious about upgrading from 10 to 11 and this is final straw. I will have to look at Linux options and see if my Windows-only programs will run effectively under WINE.

    Australis13 ,

    Thanks, will do!

    Australis13 ,

Good to know. I don't play many games, but do have some older ones from GoG that would be nice to keep.

    Australis13 ,

Because I haven't yet updated from Windows 10 to 11 and had been putting it off. In the past week, though, I have seen a number of news articles highlighting issues I am going to have with Windows 11 and this particular article, indicating that they have been effectively leaving systems vulnerable simply because they have applications they don't like installed is just not good enough. I'd understand it if they were saying "we can't guarantee your OS stability with these apps" or "we can't guarantee these apps will work anymore" if they were removing older API support, but this is ridiculous.

    Australis13 ,

Turns out one of the video-editing programs I use (VideoRedo) has shut down anyway (I think the owner passed away) and so I'll need to look for an alternative anyway - I don't think I can activate it on new machines anymore.

    Australis13 ,

I agree. There were articles and documentaries about 20 years ago that I remember featuring these sort of events. The continent affected would take 20-30 years to rebuild its electricity grid.

    Australis13 ,

In general, people are appallingly bad at weighing up long-term vs short-term stuff, both in terms of risks and benefits. It's even worse when, as you say, there's no definite deadline or it doesn't directly affect those who can do something about it.

    Australis13 ,

My understanding is that we actually don't have much of a warning (under an hour), since a CME has to reach the satellite at the Lagrange point between Earth and the Sun for us to know it's about to hit Earth. According to the article below, this includes power companies, but I remain skeptical that there's enough organisation in place to shut down the North American, European or Asian grids in 15 minutes.

Yeah, I cracked up when I saw that one too! Chuckled at O'Brien as well.

    Australis13 ,

I have never had many dreams, but they experienced an uptick when I started melatonin. Stress also makes me have more nightmares.

There is growing evidence that autism involves a dysfunction of the serotonergic system, particularly the central nervous system (CNS) pathway (Tryptophan -> 5-HTP -> Serotonin -> N-Acetylserotonin -> Melatonin). There are also studies showing that the conversion from N-Acetylserotonin (NAS) to melatonin is impeded in autism.

I did a lot of digging into this to try to aid my sleep and general health. Here are the key takeways:

    1. Vitamin D regulates serotonin synthesis and Vitamin D deficiency can reduce the amount of Tryptophan entering the CNS, so make sure you're not deficient. Unfortunately Tryptophan competes with other large amino acids for entry into the brain, so if you can't get enough through your diet, you can use 5-HTP supplements to aid serotonin production.
    2. Vitamin B6 is required for the conversion of 5-HTP to serotonin.
    3. Low magnesium has been correlated with a reduction in serotonin production.
    4. Melatonin supplements (anywhere from 5mg to 20mg) can help a lot with making up for the poor conversion from NAS to melatonin.

If anyone's interested I can dig up the studies/references I used.

(As an aside, sleep apnoea will also reduce the amount of REM sleep, as past a certain point your brain will keep pulling you back into light sleep in order to breathe. If you haven't checked if you have sleep apnoea, please do so!)

    Australis13 , (edited )

You're welcome. Unfortunately there's no one place where you can read up on it; in my case I searched for any studies or papers on autism and/or serotonin to get a better understanding of how the system worked. Whilst some research is behind paywalls, a lot is still publicly accessible (ResearchGate is one such site). Google Scholar is probably the easiest way to search for relevant papers, though, as it usually lists where the full paper (as a PDF) is available.

Some of the papers I've come across that may be of interest to you:

As for the quantity of melatonin, that was in discussion with my doctor. He expected that the commonly available 2mg supplements wouldn't do anything and that it would probably take 10mg to have a significant impact. He also said not to go above 20mg. In my case, 10mg works very well, but was increasing the risk of being tired the next day - so I am currently on 5mg (this helps, but I don't sleep through the night as well as I did on 10mg).

Also on the safety side of things, be aware that 5-HTP should not be taken with SSRIs without careful medical supervision due to the interaction and risk of serotonin syndrome.

The Daleks' Masterplan is an obvious candidate for a missing story, but I think I'd also be happy to swap Planet of Giants for Marco Polo.

Alternatively, I'd swap the two surviving episodes of The Crusade for the missing two episodes of The Reign of Terror. The Crusade doesn't really work for me, as it is unlike most other 60s historicals where there is a clear historical arc (e.g. buildup to the burning of Rome in The Romans or the fall of Robespierre in The Reign of Terror).

    Australis13 ,

    In a heartbeat!

The BBC Won't Use AI to Promote Doctor Who Again After Being Yelled at by Fans ( gizmodo.com )

The backlash was immediate, but it didn’t stop the BBC from using text generated by LLMs—and purportedly checked and copy-edited by a human before approval—in two marketing emails and mobile push notifications to advertise Doctor Who. But now, the corporation will stop the experimentation entirely after a wave of official...

    Australis13 ,

Given how bad the show's writing has been for years and the declining in viewership in the Chibnell era, I'm actually surprised the BBC actually reversed course for once.

    Australis13 ,

Not necessarily. My cats love my office chair as well and sometimes I just grab another chair since I don't have the heart to disturb them.

    Australis13 ,

    Ugh.

My experience has been that Coles paper bags were already weaker/more prone to tearing than the Woolworths ones, so looks like they are doubling-down on their inferior product.

    Australis13 ,

It is refreshing to see someone who has left MAGA and realises the full potential danger that Trump and the GOP pose.

    Australis13 ,

Out of curiosity, given that the author of the posted article formerly agreed with you, what do you make of his views now?

    Australis13 ,

Another cult that clearly doesn't follow the Bible they claim to believe in.

I wonder how the men in this group would feel about Proverbs 31 and the successful business woman it describes.

    Shirt Tags ( lemmy.world )

Image: Two images almost identical to each other stacked vertically. The top one is the back of a neck of a person wearing a sweater with the tag sticking out. It is captioned "What it looks like". The bottom image is the exact same image but the sweater's tag has been replaced with a cactus. It is captioned "What it feels...

    Australis13 ,

At least a tag I can fix.... A woollen jumper (aka woolen sweater for the US folks) is just a no-go. Too itchy.

    Australis13 ,

I can see O'Brien thinking about using the Death Note, followed by Keiko yelling "Miles!" at him and hence resigning himself to beam it into space.

I doubt any of the DS9 characters would end up with a god complex like Light does, but I agree with the other comments that Garak would probably get the most mileage out of it and come up with some very inventive ways of dispatching people. Sisko would probably work out that Garak had the Death Note, but never be able to prove it nor that he'd used it.

    Australis13 ,

Cats' body language is often more subtle or more complicated than dogs. It's no surprise that the average person gets it wrong. It takes time and close observation to learn an individual cat's signals.

    Australis13 ,

Definitely! One of ours has gotten more vocal as she has worked out she can "ask" for different things.
