Good. But, xorg only

Aatube ,
@Aatube@kbin.melroy.org avatar

that is very incorrect

ParetoOptimalDev ,

Flickering makes it true for all xwayland games such as proton until nvidia driver with explicit sync.

qpsLCV5 ,

most games have never had flicker issues for me on arch/sway with a rtx2070. Steam itself used to be unusable and last i checked was still a bit glitchy, Discord also sucked, but the games always worked fine.

apart from some issues with recognizing the mouse cursor in a few games.

None of the issues I have with wayland stem from my nvidia GPU, and I'm on a laptop.

I think it was just a lie told often enough its become 'true'.

thedeadwalking4242 ,

I've been using it with gnome and nixos and it's been fine. No crashes pretty stable good preformace

Tenkard ,

There's a bug with arch distros and the Nvidia driver 550 which is breaking systems, the drivers should get updated on the 15th of May and some fixes could come out sooner, but in the meanwhile I'd wait a bit

I have flickering issues with some Electron apps. Everything else seems to work fine, including a 2nd monitor. But I still dual-boot Windows for games, I'm waiting for HDR support to fully make the switch.

Works just fine with hybrid graphics. Nvidia only? Yeah, not so much.

last i used it, 3ish months ago, it was still unusable.

@UntouchedWagons on Manjaro KDE with Nvidia proprietary drivers mine works 100% on X11, but with Wayland I still get random freezes of about 40 secs to a minute. It's better than it was a year back when it would not boot into Wayland at all. I understand this issue is affecting some using the Nvidia proprietary driver and supposedly may be resolved with KDE v6, but I'm still waiting for the KDE v6 to hit stable release.

KDE 6 has already been released. Please migrate to EndeavourOS.

lemmyvore ,

It was released but that doesn't make it stable... It's currently still receiving lots of bugfixes and improvements.

Not sure what switching to Endeavour would accomplish anyway. They both get the same packages from upstream. If you want to get them slightly faster you can switch to the testing repos on Manjaro.

Also, can we stop reacting to everything with "wipe everything and install the distro I like"? How about working with what they have first, there's often a solution.

DieserTypMatthias ,
@DieserTypMatthias@lemmy.ml avatar

You don't have to. Just replace Manjaro mirrors with the Arch ones, and you're good to go.

lemmyvore ,

Sooooo, ignore every point I made and propose jumping to yet another distro. Great advice.

Dotcom ,

Manjaro has a history of being sloppy especially with web security. The reason people suggest Endeavour has the same goal (more user friendly arch) without some of those drawbacks.

lemmyvore ,

Let me try smaller sentences.

Plasma 6 just came out recently. It still has issues. It's going to keep having issues until they're fixed. You changing distro does not make the KDE developers fix the issues faster.

Dotcom ,

You seem to be missing the forest because of all the trees in your way. The statement to not use Manjaro has nothing to do with KDE or any other DE/WM and everything to do with the development of the OS.

lemmyvore ,

Manjaro the distro is not being developed by the webmaster of manjaro.org.

LeFantome ,

Those packages are not going to be any more stable when you get them. Just older.

When you get the bug fixes happening now, it will be long after Arch and EOS did.

My impression is that EndeavourOS is more stable than Manjaro after using both extensively.

Anyway, I agree as a general principle that we should stop telling people to switch distros to solve specific technical problems.

That said, you do not have to wipe everything to move from Manjaro to EOS. I have done it on multiple machines. Perhaps their suggestion was to fix your problem in place.

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

No, I don’t think I will, nor does it make any sense to suggest such a nuclear option. Like the person you replied to, I’ll wait until it shows up in Manjaro stable repos.

I tried Plasma 6, after its release, on Wayland with my nvidia card and many things were still broken.

GadgeteerZA ,
GadgeteerZA avatar

@DieserTypMatthias why wouldn't I just rather change channels on Manjaro if I wanted it earlier. Changing distro's really seems a bit extreme and going to cause other config issues. I still use X11 as my daily driver so quite happy to wait another two or three weeks until Manjaro has finished ironing it out.

jimmy90 ,

try dual booting with the latest ubuntu and try a few things, customise it a bit. you might be surprised how good things are!

I currently have a Thinkpad W530 with a Quadro K2000M. Because I have coreboot as its firmware, I am able to run completely on the discrete GPU. So far I've been doing great.

I've looked on the feature matrix of the nouveau support and my GPU (Kepler) happens to have all the features checked-off, with the exception of dynamic power management (mostly WIP).

Right now, I'm running KDE wayland with the nouveau driver with no issue.

On the other hand, I've tried having the hybrid GPU and it sucks.

I'm not a bot, I just find funny this.

https://arewewaylandyet.com/ has links to the caveats at the bottom, though it doesn't mention CosmicDE, which is also in pre-alpha rn so I'd recommend use something stabler rn, especially for your main computer

For KDE, they are:

I have 2 PCs

my main one is full AMD running hyprland -5800X, 7900XTX, 32GB ram, etc.

My second PC is solely used for streaming and is running an old GTX 1070 for encoding purposes.

From what I can see, I've not really had any issues running hyprland on it. Though I will admit it doesn't do much beyond running Carla, OBS, Qpwgraph, Firefox, discord and jack_mixer on specially designated workspaces. And it streams soley via EVGA Xr1 Lite capture devices. It does have desktop-portal-hyprland, just in case I want to capture my stream PCs desktop, but I don't really use it much. It's connected as a second input to my secondary monitor, and has a mirrored display on a small touch screen so I don't have to swap monitor inputs too often, and can trigger scene changes with just a touch. The hardest part was getting the monitors to play nicely, as the touchscreen sits upside down.

Full specs of my second PC, as it's quite old - Intel Core i5-4690, ASRock H97M pro4, 16GB Ram, EVGA GTX 1070, Intel 120GB SSD, 1TB WD Green 5400rpm HDD.

Is Spotify an electron app? I've noticed on my laptop (with intel gpu) that in Discord the screen flickers when selecting a gif and Discord is an Electron app I'm pretty sure.

I think it is and yeah Spotify and discord both sometimes flicker but nothing else does. They’re both installed as flatpaks
