If the Court of Justice of the European Union is, as is often argued, the most powerful international court the world has seen, why is serious resistance against it not more commonplace?

This is the question I ask in my PhD thesis, which I successfully defended at the #EUI last Friday. Today it has been made available open access through the university repository!

A bar plot showing the number of environmental cases before the CJEU per year, divided into four different groups: Agriculture and fisheries, pollution, public health, and "other". Public health has risen as an environmental issue in the eyes of the CJEU since the late 2000s.
Average procedure time for references for preliminary rulings before the Court of Justiec. Efficiency reforms in the early 2000s seem to have been highly successful, including the new "urgent" procedure which seems to be working as promised. There is, however, an indication that procedure times have started increasing again the last few years.
