It hasn't been a great year for dragonflies for some reason, so I was happy to see this female vagrant darter (Sympetrum vulgatum) this morning, perched on one of the bamboo sticks I have out in the garden for them 🐲🪰

Unlike some of their cousins, they love to pose for the camera 📷🙂👍





A close-up macro photo of a vagrant darter seen side on, perched on the top of a bamboo stick. The thorax is yellow with black stripes and the abdomen is a deeper yellow, back-illuminated by the sun and almost translucent, also with black striping. The small vulvar scale pointing down from near the end of the abdomen marks it out as a female. That said, every year I find it very hard to distinguish between vagrant darters (Sypetrum vulgatum) and common darters (Sympetrum striolatum), so it could be the latter too.
