In 2023, Biden announced that the United States would be rejoining UNESCO and begin paying its dues, enacting a waiver to the congressional ban but including a proviso that the United States would cut all funding to the United Nations if Palestine was admitted as a full member state.

Pakistan says it blocked social media platform X over ‘national security’ ( www.aljazeera.com )

Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party is the most prolific user of social media platforms, particularly after the country’s traditional media began censoring news about the former cricket star and his party in the run-up to the polls. Khan has 20.6 million followers on X....

"Iran received messages from mediators to let the regime do a symbolic strike to save face, asked Iran not to retaliate,” the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed to The Cradle

https://orinocotribune.com/us-makes-failed-bid-for-iran-to-allow-symbolic-strike-by-israel/

"Iran has received messages from mediators to let the regime do a symbolic strike to save face and asked Iran not to retaliate,” the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed to The Cradle.
He added that Tehran “outright rejected” the proposal, delivered by mediators, and reiterated warnings that any Israeli attack on Iranian soil would be met with a decisive and immediate response.
The reply was delivered directly to the Swiss envoy in Tehran by officials from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and not the foreign ministry. According to The Cradle’s source, the decision for the IRGC to reply directly was meant “to send a strong warning to the US.”
“Iran successfully embarrassed all of the integrated radar network and anti-missile systems of the US and the [Israeli] regime. The US even activated its parked satellites over the region to do maximum protection and failed miserably,” the Iranian military official added.
The revelations come as US defense officials have told western media that they expect a “limited response” from Israel against Iran, which will reportedly focus on targets outside of Iranian territory.
Nevertheless, US officials stressed that Tel Aviv had not briefed the Pentagon on a “final decision” as discussions within Israel’s fractured war cabinet continued.
“The US does not intend to take part in the military response,” they confirmed. However, they expect Israel to inform Washington about response plans in advance.
[...]
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani told state TV on Monday night that Tehran’s response to any Israeli retaliation would come in “a matter of seconds, as Iran will not wait for another 12 days to respond.

Russia's bet on the Global South century

Well, it's less of a bet and more like their capitalist ruling class was forced into it because of the sanctions. But it's been shaping up to be a good thing for Russia overall, and that should get even truer as China overtakes the US.

Open source e reader ( lemmy.ml )

I recently got a Sony prs 600 e reader from 2009. The battery is at the end of its life (It lasts about 3 days with heavy reading, and a couple weeks without reading). No backlight, no Wi-Fi, just an SD card that I can load epub files and small PDFs. The screen is slow and the contrast isn't the best. The "touch screen" is the...

Reuters is just extremely negative about China in general like most other western outlets.

Like this one, which brings up Covid to negatively portray China building a fucking railway, when China was one of the countries that quarantined the best during the pandemic.

Israeli settlers set fire to cars, homes of Palestinians under occupation ( www.aljazeera.com )

Mobs of Israeli settlers have rampaged through the occupied West Bank attacking Palestinians and their property, killing two people. The latest violence was sparked by the disappearance of a 14-year-old boy from an illegal outpost, whose body was later found.

cheap labour

This isn't really the case anymore with China's quickly rising wages and rapid automation.

People these days have things built in China no longer for cheap labour but because they have entire supply chains — from the most basic materials to the most advanced products — in the country itself with its manufacturing ability higher than the next 9 countries combined.

That's the problem the US has: China has not stayed a cheap labour factory (like, say, Africa) and is actually advancing and starting to compete with the US — in some fields already having surpassed them. And this time they can't sabotage their economy like they did to Japan with the Plaza Accords.

Perks of having a socialist state.

Alsephina OP ,

Iran isn’t a credible threat to Israel or the US

This is just false. US war games in the past have shown Iran is fully capable of thwarting a US invasion. And is that really even surprising? Vietnam and Afganistan have done it, and Iran is on a different level.

Iran isn’t the anti-US champion I’m backing

Iran is funding anti-imperialist organizations/governments like Hezbollah, Ansarallah, Hamas, and is a close ally of the Syrian government. They are not socialist like the USSR-backed South Yemen, PFLP etc, but they are anti-imperialist governments that any socialist with "principals" should critically support.

The utopian perfection you desire does not exist in the world right now; by not supporting the actually existing anti-imperialists, you are doing the imperialists' job for them.

Biden vows G7 response, ‘ironclad’ US support for Israel after Iran attacks ( www.aljazeera.com )

US President Joe Biden has condemned Iranian attacks on military facilities in Israel, pledging a coordinated Group of Seven (G7) diplomatic response while highlighting the United States’s help in taking down “nearly all” of the attacking drones and missiles....

Alsephina OP ,

Iran has kept their end of the bargain of not attacking US targets. Of course the US does not keep theirs of not interfering, and shoots down Iranian drones instead.

In a written message to Washington, Iran “warned the US not to get dragged into Netanyahu’s trap”, Mohammad Jamshidi, the Iranian president’s deputy chief of staff for political affairs, wrote on X, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The US should “step aside so that you don’t get hit”.

“In response, the US asked Iran not to hit American targets,” Jamshidi said.

Alsephina OP ,

This might've mattered if the state worked for the people, but the only people a bourgois/liberal "democracy" serves are the capitalists. And the US MIC would love more war.

Alsephina OP ,

Literally this

Iran needs to get nukes fast. The US will be itching for war until it does.

Alsephina OP ,

The current problems in the DPRK stem from the brutal sanctions. Prior to the USSR's overthrow when the sanctions had far less effect, the North was developing and urbanizing faster than the South, even with 20% of its population killed, and all its infrastructure destroyed, by the US.

Agree with you on the nukes of course. The DPRK would've ended up like Libya is right now and the US might have been at war against China if they didn't develop their nuclear deterrence.

Alsephina OP ,

Settler colonialism has nothing to do with religion.

Palestine is merely good place for a colony since it's a bridge between Asia and Africa; israel's formation used common british colonization tactics [III], with companies literally named "Colonization Commission", "Jewish Colonial Trust" and the like.

Theodor Herzl, the founder of "zionism" was a racist who saw it as a rampart of the west in the region.

“We should there form a portion of a rampart of Europe against Asia, an outpost of civilization as opposed to barbarism. We should as a neutral State remain in contact with all Europe, which would have to guarantee our existence.” Source [II]

Only difference now is that the US has been the de facto leader of the imperial core since WW2, no longer UK in Europe. They are thus now israel's main supporter.

Alsephina ,
Alsephina , (edited )

The US just needs to stop actively funding and supporting the genocide, not even stop the genocide itself.

Though ig it's a moot point since "israel" would quickly stop being able to continue it if the US support is removed.

Hong Kong’s democracy

Lmao, bourgeois "democracy" is only a democracy for capitalists. Real democracy like that of mainland China actually serves the people by improving their lives, lifting them from poverty, building infrastructure and making goods more affordable for workers, as you can see in this article.

The American Dream Is Alive and Well — in China

Alsephina ,

Everything else people have mentioned in the comments. Proletarian democracy, democratic centralism, participatory democracy, etc.

Well, the first two are really just a way of saying socialism.

Saying what can't be said: Israel has been defeated – a total defeat ( www.haaretz.com )

We've lost. Truth must be told. The inability to admit it encapsulates everything you need to know about Israel's individual and mass psychology. There's a clear, sharp, predictable reality that we should begin to fathom, to process, to understand and to draw conclusions from for the future. It's no fun to admit that we've lost,...

Alsephina ,

I mean yeah, but that's the point. Even an israeli source is admitting the defeat.

The only thing "israel" has succeeded in doing is genocide.

Alsephina , (edited )

All Palestinian violence against the occupation is justified resistance, not "terrorism"

Hamas's tactics (attacking villages, taking hostages, using tunnels and guerilla warfare) and goals (driving out an occupying force and reuniting their country) are no different from other revolutionary armed organizations like the Viet Cong's.

Decolonization is violent; best way to avoid it is to not colonize in the first place.

And anyway, Hamas has done a far better job avoiding killing civilians than the occupying force with military superiority and far more precise equipment has. The final death toll from the Oct 7 retaliation is now thought to be 695 Israeli "civilians" (mostly unarmed IDF conscripts), 373 armed IDF members, 71 foreigners and 36 children. While Israel has killed over 30 thousand Palestinians, 2/3 of whom are women and children.

You might want to fix the misspelling in "ethnically"
