Why are all the instances from each other?

@nostupidquestions

Has there been drama over there? Is there a functional reason?

Also if you know any good channels, @ them below

glimse ,

Ask your instance admin

madiator2011 ,

@Shkshkshk @nostupidquestions As an admin of my own I usually approve instances manually. Though many times at least after 6.0 update many instances might have missing public/private keys preventing correct federation.

If a chihuahua and great dane, through much effort, can create an offspring, why are human beings so offended by differing externals which are a product of circumstance not choice?

@alvaro @nostupidquestions I seldom use the shift key to capitalize the letters. My left pinky always goes to caps lock rather than the left shift.

I know nothing of mechanical keyboards, but I have always found cool the Corne ish Zen. However[1], I don't work alone so I would like something as silent as possible. I have an old Macally keyboard[2] that I know is silent enough. Is it possible to find a keyboard like the Corne but silent as a regular BT keyboard? Would you recommend one, or it is not actually possible?

Eczpurt ,

If you decide to go the more custom route and put something together yourself, you can always adjust the acoustics to a fair degree based on your plate, switches, case, etc. There’s endless possibilities and the same number of videos showcasing sound and builds all over!

As above, Keychron is a great place to start for good quality and budget friendly builds.

TriPolarBearz ,

What do you like about the corne ish zen?

It is an ortholinear keyboard, meaning the keys are arranged in straight columns not staggered like your current keyboard. I haven’t used ortholinear before, but I heard it takes time to learn how to type on it since the layout is different.

Do you like the ortholinear layout, split keyboard, ergonomics, mechanical switches, wireless/Bluetooth, all of it?

If you just want split keyboard with mechanical switches, the keychron Q11 is a nice choice, but it is not wireless.

keychron.com/…/keychron-q11-qmk-custom-mechanical…

If you want silent switch options, keychron also has silent switches you can buy. But you will have to install them yourself (it’s not hard).

www.keychron.com/…/keychron-silent-k-pro-switch

Like others have said, keychron is a nice place to start. There are plenty of other companies.

If you want to look into ergonomic keyboards, there is also the ergomechkeyboards community on lemmy (not sure how to link)

Currently I have a Boox e-ink reader, but I learned that they don't last that much and their post-sale support is the worst. I see that this device will fail in the next 6-12 months, what e-ink readers (that it is NOT A KINDLE) would you recommend? I'm interested on reading both .epub and whatever is the current kindle app format, along with PDFs, being able to add notes is not super critical.

recommendations?

cc @nostupidquestions

SaintWacko ,

Yeah, definitely don’t ever get books from Amazon. I just use it for library books, or use Amazon to load my own epubs onto it

ExLisper ,

It's been a month but for anyone finding this thread.. Pocketbook is a good alternative (pocketbookstore.com). I had one for years and it was doing great but I stepped on it like an idiot... The base model is cheaper than Kobo and has all the same features + buttons.

alvaro ,

Calibre and online sites can convert from PDF to Epub usually lose most of the format. I tried PDFElements, with similarly poor results.

Is there any service/app that actually works and converts a PDF to Epub in a way that resembles closely the original?

cc @nostupidquestions

ChaoticNeutralCzech ,

@alvaro Well, that’s what I figured. You technically can preserve formatting on EPUB but why would you? It’s not what the format is for, and most readers can support either. If yours doesn’t, look for apps or a software update.

alvaro OP ,

@nostupidquestions For posterity, I found that https://github.com/pdf2htmlEX/pdf2htmlEX does an excellent job converting to HTML (although the file size increases a lot).

alvaro ,

Maybe a naive question, but Is there a service like 23 and me but that doesn’t collect/keep my genetic information ? @nostupidquestions

Treczoks ,

Still, those reasons apply. If you want such a service, expect to pay way more than usual. I do expect that some companies offer such a service for VIPs and Celebrities who don’t want to pop up in other peoples listings, but they probably pay for it through the nose.

volvoxvsmarla ,

Are you sure you cannot simply opt out while registering the sample? I live in Germany and I can only use these kinds of analyses for ethnicity/heritage analysis since genetic testing of risk factors as therelike are forbidden here. But I remember myheritage (which I used) asked me a lot of questions on how much data I want to share, what I want to share anonymously, what I want to share for research or keep in the database or sample storage for future analyses. I was also able to absolutely delete all data - account, sample destruction, genetic data - from every database. Comes with the obvious caveat that you cannot access any data from your initial analysis anymore but in my situation that was an ok trade off.

If my dental insurance has 100% coinsurance on preventative and basic care, 70% coinsurance on major care, a deductible of $50, and a maximum payout of $2000, does that mean I can only spend the insurance $ on major services and pay out of pocket for everything else?
