Recommendations for a daypack that A) is able to be stashed into a larger carry on backpack, and B) can carry a MacBook around during the day? Ideally packs and smushes quite flat when empty, but a bit of padding for the laptop

Thinking Osprey Daylite/Arcane, Aer Go Pack, etc.

@christianselig Deuter Amanger is quite nice, too.

@christianselig Trakke makes some nice stuff. I have a Bannoch from them. https://trakke.com/products/bannoch-backpack

@so Spiffy!

@christianselig I’m late to this, but I’ve been using this backpack for over 10 years now and I absolutely love it, it gets as flat or bulky as you need https://www.coteetciel.com/products/nile-obsidian-black

christianselig OP ,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@rafa That looks so cool

nor ,
@nor@mas.to avatar

@christianselig oh! I also have a timbuk2 carry on piece (thank you thrift store!) and it’s perfect for me and I would legit buy more of their stuff if my ten year old dakine backpack ever started showing wear.

christianselig OP ,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@nor I like their stuff too, was considering the Wingman but it has a weird water bottle holder

nor ,
@nor@mas.to avatar

@christianselig ooo yeah that is kinda weird. Wouldn’t work with the 40oz hydro flask I lug around, and it takes a monumental effort to get my coffee thermos out of my hands…

@christianselig Osprey Daylight was going to me my rec. I have one and love it!

christianselig OP ,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@josh It looks really nice, but the normal (non Plus) version seems to have about as much laptop padding as a kleenex :(

josh ,
@josh@vickerson.me avatar

@christianselig fair, the padding is very minimal. I have a plastic shell on my MacBook so it doesn't concern me too much, considering how infrequently I actually have to carry it around. my old "commuter” bag from The Before Times™️ is a more padded backpack.

@christianselig Maybe a bit too bulky, but I LOVE the Evergoods PLC 20 as my daily bag. Would fit in a large backpack, but it’s definitely not a typical “packable” bag. https://evergoods.us/products/panel-loader-classic-20l

christianselig OP ,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@boateng How flat is it empty? That's pretty nice

boateng ,
@boateng@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig Id say you could smush it down to about 2.5 inches thick, give or take. It has a padded bottom, so that has to be folded down or in half. Kind of hard to describe, but I’d say about 2.5.

christianselig OP ,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@boateng Aahh this was a really contender for me until I realized it doesn't have any water bottle holder on the outside ;_;

jjlsetter ,
@jjlsetter@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig @boateng Similar to Nate's recommendation, the Evergoods CHZ22 could possibly work too

boateng ,
@boateng@mastodon.social avatar

@jjlsetter @christianselig Agree! That has TWO water bottle pockets, haha! Evergoods stuff is just phenomenal. I love the PLC but I have a 40oz Takeya bottle that I can keep inside.

jjlsetter ,
@jjlsetter@mastodon.social avatar

@boateng @christianselig I'm with Nate on Evergoods. The CHZ22 went with me to my 9 day trip to Ireland and loved it. Especially the outside pockets for my wife and I's water bottles when touring.

christianselig OP ,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@jjlsetter @boateng Wow this is pretty spiffy. Any chance you could attach a picture of it completely flattened down?

jjlsetter ,
@jjlsetter@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig @boateng Sure! Like Nate said it's around 2" to 2-5" when "compressed". It was hard to take pics of it full squished down but hopefully this helps

cruzin ,
@cruzin@atx.social avatar

@christianselig I recently picked this up as my packable day pack for an upcoming trip. It might fit the bill. Not the best padding for the laptop sleeve, but you could use a separate sleeve. Sleeve padding can sometimes make them less packable. https://bellroy.com/products/lite-daypack

christianselig OP ,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@cruzin Ooo that's pretty snazzy

jsit ,
@jsit@social.coop avatar

@christianselig @cruzin I have this one and love it as well, seconding this recommendation.

christianselig OP ,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@jsit @cruzin It would honestly probably be my choice if it had a decent water bottle holder :(

jsit ,
@jsit@social.coop avatar

@christianselig It has two on the inside! That's maybe my favorite part of it.

christianselig OP ,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@jsit I don't want water stored inside where my expensive tech is haha, just give me a normal external holder

jsit ,
@jsit@social.coop avatar

@christianselig Yeah I hear you on that. That's partly why I use a water bottle with a screw-on lid and a rubber gasket, the Klean Kanteen.

christianselig OP ,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@jsit Fair, I don't think I could ever trust a water bottle enough though haha

@christianselig I have a Timbuk2 Especial Medio, which has padding on back and straps, but that’s the only structure to it - body folds mostly flat.
Alas, NLA; but this looks like its successor (?).

BrokenFlows ,
@BrokenFlows@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig Tom Bihn’s Daylight is one I’ve been considering for a bag I could pack into a bag, but it’s bring-your-own-padding for laptops. The only padding seems to be in the straps.

andreiborisov ,

@christianselig try https://wayks.com It can’t be stashed, but it can be transformed from a smaller form to a larger travel backpack

Mister_Eel ,

@christianselig I have an Osprey farpoint for travelling, and I’ve been using the daypack that comes with it for 5 years now as a daily backpack. I can’t find the exact model on their website any more but the ‘arcane small day’ comes closest (might need the large day version if you’ve got a 16” laptop).
It’s sometimes kind of small, but that’s also why I love it

heavyboots , (edited )
@heavyboots@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig I randomly got this Mountainsmith day pack with a separate padded laptop pocket and I love it, especially because you don’t have to open the main compartment to get to the laptop area. Fits my 2021 MBP 16” perfectly.

EDIT: It’s called the Divide although today’s version looks slightly different.

@christianselig I recently did this with a Fjallraven Kanken backpack. Padding for a laptop and so thin it squishes right down.

@christianselig Mines not a day pack and more a laptop bag, but I have had my Thule since like 2011/2 and it’s been overseas, it was on my back every day when I took my motorbike to work. They do make pretty good quality stuff so worth checking what options they have

@christianselig This is my go to EDC pack when traveling. It folds flat in the suitcase, has a laptop compartment and can be washed in a machine (and dries fast):

@christianselig Yes, it gets the job done but don't expect wonders.

@christianselig does Matador make anything that would suit your needs? They are the absolute kings of packable bags. Maybe a Laptop Base Layer + ReFraction or Freefly?

@christianselig I saw these Niid backpacks recently and have not been able to stop thinking about the way their UNO II unfolds. Check out the gif ½ way down this page: https://www.niid.com/products/uno-ii-light-gray-backpack

No experience with this brand, but they’re definitely doing something different. I love my Peak Everyday Backpack 20L, but don’t like that it doesn’t pack into a larger bag. The NIID Uno and Decode though…

Alextechlabs ,

@christianselig my setup for a similar purpose is a Tom Bihn Synapse 19 that I store in an Aeronaut 30. I traveled multiple time with this setup since 2018 and I love it. Ridiculously pricy for Canadians though.
