It’s a few years late, but a prototype has taken flight
Getting Boom’s Supersonic Test Jet airborne is an important moment for Boom in its efforts to develop economical supersonic travel.

The FlyLEDs stuff I ordered came in. I was not expecting such wonderful directions to be included so that is pretty cool (and full color). I haven't started building anything on it yet but it looks like a nice project while I wait for other parts (or I'm feeling lazy).

box full of circuit boards, components, sockets, heat sinks, resistors, and other doodads.
Tail nav/strobe for RV-10 rudder. It is a resin bubble with high powered LEDs inside

Bell Airacobra I in RAF service https://www.destinationsjourney.com/historical-military-photographs/bell-airacobra-i-raf-fighter/

The Bell Airacobra fighters delivered to the Royal Air Force were essentially the same as P-39D aircraft, with the 37 mm cannon replaced by a 20 mm and the addition of armour plating, bulletproof glass and self sealing fuel tanks. This additional weight caused a reduction in speed of 30 mph, making it inferior to most existing RAF and Luftwaffe fighters. As a result of the poor performance most of the ordered was passed on to Russia or used by USAAF as the P-400. Only 601 Squadron operated the type in the RAF. This squadron only flew one operational mission, against coastal barges along the French coast on 9 October 1941.

I am pretty sick so kind of low on energy but today I managed to do a little bit of work. First I attached the nose rib and drilled in two more holes that were present on the spar but not on the rib. Then I put on the two inboard mid ribs and drilled one hole into each that was not present. I also match drilled all existing holes.

Then, per instructions, attached all the nose ribs and match drilled them. Next was all the middle ribs which also got match drilled.

I started preparing the skins to put in the cradles but I ran out of energy so it'll have to be next time. Being sick isn't that fun (shocker, I know).

Front spar with all the nose ribs attached for the horizontal stabilizer. They were all match drilled by the drill sitting on the workbench.
The full spar with all the ribs attached. Everything has been match drilled. It is 8 nose ribs and 14 mid ribs on an ~ 11 foot spar. It takes up a lot of space.

NOW that I have finally gotten the middle ribs done, it is nose rib time. I finished one nose rib just to get an idea of the work involved (pretty easy, I used a belt sander to trim the front as described).

I was tired of working on metal and the temperature today was pretty nice so I went about fabricating the cradle for the stabilizer. The instructions say it doesn't have to be super accurate and I hope that's true because I didn't do a great job but I started by cutting out some blocks from scrap plywood I had from building my workbenches.

Next time I'd use a circular saw and rip them with straight lines but practicing with a jigsaw isn't a bad thing considering I haven't used it yet.

    (continued...)
