Nothing is more annoying than influencers giving themselves permission to dehumanize Palestinians. Here are two examples, but I've seen many more. These are definitely two of the most defensive, lol.

Maybe it says more about the pitfalls of influencer culture (than the individuals), the need to be seen by millions as "authentic," ...

    As you can clearly see in the video, these women were "disinvited" while others were being let in who were in line behind them. When pressed about why they were not allowed in, the Harris officials could not give a legitimate reason. For all those voters who were not sure about who to vote for in the upcoming election, please ask yourselves if you are ok with the openly, blatant racism we are seeing here by the Biden/Harris ticket. Not only are they funding and giving political cover to Israel to commit a genocide against the Palestinian people but they are also discriminating against Americans for their religious beliefs. Shame on our Democratic “leaders”, @nvdems staffers Sean Hoey & Demi Falcon, @ClarkDems Chair Shelby Wiltz, and every supporter partaking in Islamophobia.

    If you're reading this as someone new to the topic, you'll pick up a lot of detail about by the end, both in the older spy/romance storyline &in the one of a guy trying to get a book published. This book may just cause you to join a protest or scream into the void. Or at least examine some biases in the media or in your brain.

The ending is perfectly finished and unfinished with a haunting last line. This photo: My copy of Beggar at Damascus Gate.     I have to apologize for the previous three stars, this is amazing. It's like an Agatha Christie novel I used to like but far less problematic: archaeology, mystery, spies, romance. If you find it on a Palestine reading list, there's good reason, though you'll have to wait a bit for that plot/theme to emerge. You'll visit Petra (!), France, India, and Palestine among other places. Some other solid themes: -Lots of reference to poetry in here, so it'll be no surprise that the idea of Palestine as a lover comes into play. -I liked the play of the magical against the sort of scientific or calulating world and their convergence. -Near the end she also explores that phenomenon that we contain multitudes. People seemed to discover this with social media in a new way recently (this book is from the 90s about the 70s), but it's always been the case that different bits of our personality come out with different people- or we may show different faces professionally, to close friends, or to family. Sometimes this brings an accusation of falseness or deceit, but maybe all of it is truth - how we want to be perceived, how we live up to it, how we deal with not living up to it, etc. Always an interesting question. But I think if you're reading this as someone new to the topic, you'll pick up a lot of detail about Palestine by the end, both in the older spy and romance story and in the 90s storyline of just this guy trying to get a book published. This book may just cause you to join

    Thread continued: The reason this ridiculous racist piece is so silly is that Hamas is a small one-issue group that is a branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, which is already the "global" part of that ideology. It's like asking if the ideology of New Hampshire could "go global" as it's part of the US The purpose of Hamas, as one (1) branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, is Palestinian liberation from the Israeli occupation. It has no other purpose. When Israel ends its illegal occupation, Hamas will most likely dissolve. As long as Israel breaks international law, Hamas lives. Now the bigger question to ask is why the West has made it so impossible to stand for Palestinian liberation that Hamas -- which only won governance because Palestinians were protesting the bad governance of the Palestinian Authority -- is the only entity defending Gaza right now

    I revisited a book set under Israeli occupation in the 70s. It's an old one, but i think there's still a lot there on Palestinians not being a monolith & violence of occupation.

    I think old as it is this is still an interesting look at different attitudes of Palestinians under occupation, a reminder that they are not a monolith. The book switches point of view a few times so that we explore the inner life of a newly committed freedom fighter, a man who has a change of heart in prison, and a guy who has his peaceful disposition challenged by both family and Israel. All the while, you'll be educated (if you are new to the subject) on various common aspects of the everyday violence of Israeli ccupation - and the extraordinary. What's the final message? Idk. Things just sort of happen. No. There's more! Whether you adopt a peaceful disposition or a violent revolutionary one, the occupation comes for you. To demolish, destroy, imprison, kill. This is the author's third book. Her first, the only copy, was confiscated by Israel. Written in 1976, it was an uncommon view of life under occupation, fictionalized or otherwise at the time. I think it's still relevant. You can compare/contrast then to now - in some ways, the occpuation's grown more harsh, entrenched, and violent and some ways it's the same.
