‘Transgressing into poetry’: Nationality, Gender & Sexuality in SONNETS FROM SCOTLAND by Edwin Morgan & THE PRICE OF STONE by Richard Murphy
by Prof Tara Stubbs
Both #Scottish poet Edwin Morgan & (Anglo-) #Irish poet Richard Murphy transgressed poetic norms: contradicting ‘nationalist’ poets of their respective traditions, making playful use of language, & treating #gender & #sexuality in daring ways
Today in labor history April 28, 1896: Na Hye-sok was born. She was a South Korean feminist, poet, writer, painter and journalist. She was the first female professional painter and the first feminist writer in Korea. In 1919, the authorities jailed her for participating in the March 1st Movement against Japanese rule in Korea. In 1934, she published an essay called “Divorce Testimony.” In that piece, she wrote about the repression of female sexuality. She also said that her ex-husband couldn’t satisfy her sexually and refused to talk about it with her. And she also promoted the idea of "test marriages," where a couple would live together before marrying to see if they really were compatible. These ideas were considered so scandalous and shocking that her career took a tailspin and never recovered.
The social norm is constructed: not naturally occurring but created by the society in which it is found.
Hence there are no actions which in themselves are inherently #abnormal or universally condemned by all societies at all times. Deviance is thus situational and contextual.
Come Together: The Science (and Art!) of Creating Lasting Sexual Connections by Emily Nagoski
In Come as You Are, Emily Nagoski, PhD, revolutionized the way we think about women’s sexuality. Now, in Come Together, Nagoski takes on a fundamentally misunderstood subject: sex in long-term relationships.

🧵 1/5 As I introspect on my Autism and how it’s impacted my life, I am forced to consider my sexual explorations starting around age 10 and the social awkwardness that’s always been present. Before, I concluded that it was a function of my introversion and being closeted.
When Andre Braugher died last week, one clip from "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" dominated social media: A scene in which Braugher's Captain Raymond Holt and Stephanie Beatriz's Detective Rosa Diaz talked about coming out. For IGN, Amelia Emberwing talks about how one line from that clip changed her life.
"I'm a GAMP, and it's not a writer's cramp that makes me wanna be amp about it—I'm a straight champ who don't need a Virgin Mary bigot or a lick-spigot vamp to question my mastodon feed, or my literary, noumenon handstamp."—Max R. J. Ovbi
Today in Labor History November 23, 1644: At the height of the English Civil War, John Milton published an anti-censorship pamphlet, “Areopagitica.” He had been censored several times, particularly in his attempts to defend divorce, a radical idea in those days. He anonymously published “The Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce” (1643), which was condemned by the Puritan clergy as heretical and supportive of sexual libertinism.
As someone who studies data privacy, very little in surveillance capitalism & exploitation of users by corporations surprises me.
BUT THIS: Kia, Nissan & others privacy policies state collecting and using information on your "sexual activity" & "sex life." Given cars are computers on wheels!!!
What evolutionary biology can and can't tell us about sex, gender, and sexuality.
From the MIT Press Reader: "Some human social constructs like gender are viewed erroneously in an evolutionary context. It’s time for our understanding of a person’s self-identity to evolve."
