Amazon Prime Video subscribers are about to see even more ads. In January, viewers who didn't pay an additional $3 a month started to see commercials. Now, Amazon has announced that it's adding what it describes as shoppable carousel ads, interactive pause ads and interactive brand trivia ads. Here's more from Ars Technica. We want to know, have you, or will you ditch streaming services as they start to add commercials?

@CultureDesk @TechDesk I very much dropped Amazon Prime over ads.

Over the past five years, they've made my Amazon branded TV significantly slower and laden with ads. Can't even turn it on anymore without a full screen ad getting in the way of using the TV!

And, over the past year, they've decided that me paying for content isn't good enough. They want me to pay AND see these increasingly awful, intrusive ads.

Said goodbye months ago and the decision looks more right as time passes...

Life-threatening rat pee infections reach record levels in NYC

Between 2001 and 2020, there was an average of 3 cases per year. Last year's tally was 24.

@arstechnica Often, all you need is a title/subject matter to know when you're looking at a Beth Mole story. :p

Am I the only person who connects my TV to the Internet? I ask because people commenting on an LG vulnerability story posted to a certain tech news site say it's cray cray and you should instead either go without or use a Roku or AppleTV to stream.

Ragashingo ,
@Ragashingo@starside.social avatar

@dangoodin It's not just safety. My 5 year old Amazon FireTV branded Toshiba is significantly worse than when it was new.

It is significantly slower. Inputs and Apps take more clicks to get to. And, most recently, it started full screening the top ad carousel when idle for more than 5 seconds including when first turned on.

As far as I know it is secure as in no gaping vulnerabilities or botnets. But it would be a better, snappier, easier to use TV today if I had kept it offline. :(

Have y'all seen the newest surprise series that just debuted on Crunchyroll?! It's the mysteriously named "Test Series"

It’s doing pretty well. 4.5 ⭐️’s! Tons of comments. And it even features a playful cat bouncing a ball alongside an exciting/ominous countdown!

I couldn't find which studio is spearheading this. Or anything about the voice actors. Or plot. But hey, this kind of no advertising treatment worked for The Boy and the Heron, right?

TFW the neighbor down the street that you've talked to a handful of times and liked suddenly tells you that half the politicians in this country are shapeshifters in league with Satan and invites you over for coffee.

@dangoodin I mean… they're more or less right about politicians, so the coffee will probably be good, too!

A UAL Boeing 737-800 has been grounded in Medford, Oregon after it was found to be missing a fuselage panel following a flight from SFO. https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/united-plane-departing-from-sfo-lands-in-oregon-with-missing-panel/

Ragashingo ,
@Ragashingo@starside.social avatar

@w7voa Will be interesting to hear if this is more a Boeing-level issue (something not built or assembled correctly) or a more local issue (something like an airline tech forgetting to re-latch a panel that then fell off).

Metallic Rouge has been good so far. Sure, it’s taking a somewhat slow approach to revealing its plot, but that’s fine since its first two episodes have been good. I’m not quite ready to give it a full recommendation, but maybe the next episode or two will really get the main plot moving.

What it does have, if nothing else, is an epic combat song! I’ve watched this official lyrics video of “Crimson Lightning” several times in the last two weeks. It’s that good.

@macrumors Oh wow! Someone a week or three ago had a chart showing how long it'd been since various Apple products had a refresh and the polishing cloth was the longest. It was at like several years at this point.

Time to reset the clock!

Chromium found in lead-tainted fruit pouches may explain contamination

Lead chromate, an artificial coloring, has been used in other spices to conceal poor quality.

The venerable Voyager 1 spacecraft is experiencing another glitch. Instead of sending science and engg. data, it is sending a 0101 bit pattern.

The problem has been narrowed down to the flight data system (FDS), which is not communicating properly with the telecom unit (TMU). A reboot did not help.

Stay tuned as NASA engrs work out a fix for this 1970's era computer, which has performed magnificently during its long 46-year journey to the planets and to outer space.
