I have both web and websecure set up as entrypoints.

Oh. You're right. That worked. I feel really silly that I missed that.

Thank you so much!

Unrelated, but I'd remove the question mark from your title or add [Question] to the beginning of it. Some people (myself included) might think this was advice on where to start, not asking about where you should start. Good luck on your journey!

@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

If you want your environment to be consistent between desktops, keep it mostly stock. The default KDE themeing and setup is pretty damn similar to Windows 10, and I've kept it stock ever since I started using it ~1 ½ years ago.

fenndev OP ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

The issue is storage costs. Currently they (and some Blu-ray shows I ripped) are taking up just over 12TB. I bought all of these movies when I had money to spend on stuff like that, but money is short and times are tough. "Storage is cheap" but my wallet is cheaper right now, aha.

fenndev OP ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

Mhm, I'm aware. I just figured the nice folks here would likely have more experience with codecs and such than elsewhere!

(That, and, if I can build my own replacement Disney+, I would definitely want to share with friends.)

fenndev OP ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

AV1 is definitely what I'd like to do. I'm not aiming for maximum compatibility; small file size and high quality encodes are my goal. I can transcode if needed.

A Bash script to rip music off CUE/BIN files ( lemmy.ml )

I thought I'd take the opportunity to share a Bash script I made to automate ripping music off CUE/BIN files. It splits BINs into separate files, so it's 1 file per track, and strips pregap data, encodes audio tracks to FLAC or Ogg Vorbis, and it also generates new CUE sheets....

It is not an abuse of anyone's creative rights to the convert music from a game you legally own to a different format.

fenndev ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

I think Obsidian and Logseq are helping to change this.

For what it's worth, I've been running alternative Discord clients for years (Webcord, discord-screenaudio, and now Vesktop/Vencord) and haven't encountered any issues or bans. By far, the most polished and well integrated is Vesktop/Vencord. I don't consider my Discord account worth risking either, but given that I've yet to see a verifiable report of someone losing access to Discord for using an alternate client (even the ones that enable Nitro subscription features), I think I'm pretty safe.

Personally, I'd say risk it for the biscuit. There are some hacky workarounds but all of them are annoying to set up and finicky. As for alternative platforms, I'm not sure...

Gas fees, fees to convert to fiat, electricity bills for miners / initial investment for stakers... No matter how you frame it, there are still associated fees. Might as well use the standard we have at the moment.

Automated Archival-Level Git Repo Mirroring?

Shortly before the recent removal of Yuzu and Citra from Github, attempts were made to back up and archive both Github repos; it's my understanding that these backups, forks, etc. are fairly incomplete, either lacking full Git history or lacking Pull Requests, issues, discussions, etc....

Depending on your threat model, your best bet would probably be to purchase a burner phone at Walmart or something with cash. Then only use the phone for verification purposes.

fenndev ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

Pardon me, but would this not interfere with partners' ability to host services via 99% of Linux-based servers?

fenndev ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

Unrelated, but I would have preferred a stolen, watermarked Getty Images photo rather an an AI-generated one. Fits the pirate vibe better to have blatantly and unabashedly stolen something than to indirectly do so with plausible deniability.

Is it possible to have a Subsonic server that falls back to the YT Music API when a song isn't downloaded?

The major thing keeping me from self-hosting my music is that I mostly discover music by using the radio function in ViMusic (Uses the YT Music API to stream music) or by finding a song through friends, social media, etc. and then listening to it in ViMusic to see whether it's good and I want to add it to my playlist....

fenndev ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

I know this isn't an answer to your question, but - ViMusic has a radio function? Where?

I've been trying Bazzite out for a few days, and it's really neat. Coming from a standard distro, I like the idea that I can install pretty much anything with the combo of Flatpak, AppImages, and Distrobox. I was unable to install DaVinci Resolve on the Fedora Distrobox however, and the lack of Snaps - although I much prefer Flatpaks or AppImages - kinda sucks because it would be nice to have the Snap for Flutter...

fenndev ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

I've heard (but not been able to verify) that it's less secure, somehow. Although I would imagine the containerization would, somehow, mitigate this.

fenndev ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

This reminded me that I wanted to look into open source alternatives to Bionic Reader...

Marxists in authoritarian left

Which Marxists are you referring to? You'll find a lot (likely the majority) of socialists and communists in the bottom left corner. Put a picture of Stalin up there and rewrite it as either "Tankies" or "Stalinists" and you'll be much more accurate.

fenndev ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

I've no idea what you're referring to aside from maybe the Intel ME, but there may be a way to flash coreboot on it.

VPN to home network options

I currently have a server running Unraid as the OS, which has some WireGuard integration built in. Which I've enabled and been using to remotely access services hosted on that server. But as I've expanded to include things like Octopi running on a Pi3 and NextcloudPi running on a Pi4 (along with AdGuardHome), I'm trying to...

fenndev ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

I've seen a lot of descriptions of Tailscale but still have no idea what exactly it does. I get that it uses Wireguard, but what differentiates it from a typical VPN setup? NAT traversal?

Went to check out the source code for the front-end and see if there was anything I could help out with... Saw it was made with Angular.

oh no

(Congrats on integrating Fedi into it!)

fenndev ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

Do you happen to have a Matrix or Discord server set up to talk about development? I'd love to help out if I can.

fenndev ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

I use it alongside SwiftKey (with Internet access disabled). It's a godsend in Termux.

fenndev ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

I use GrapheneOS. It is unable to access the Internet entirely.

fenndev ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

Have you looked into either Obsidian or Logseq?

Obsidian is not open source, but uses Markdown for notes just like Logseq. Very popular overall.

fenndev ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

Interesting idea. Personally, I would like to see larger groups of admins and server members working together towards common goals and setting common standards - what we have right now is more like a confederacy, not a federation. There is no unifying, governing body made up of representatives from the servers.

Always happy to see a new Fediverse service!

My only concern is Python. Wonderful for AI and scripting, but I'm not sure how well it works as a web server. Although, I'd assume that a lot of the web server code is actually C under the hood...

fenndev ,
@fenndev@leminal.space avatar

Thanks for the in-depth response! I definitely understand choosing Python for a fledgling project like this and trying to attract a developer community.

As for my musing about C and Python, I wasn't really talking about Cython or anything like that; I actually meant that I figured the specific code in the Python standard library and various frameworks for server applications were written under the hood with C and heavily optimized.

May I ask why? Using alternative sources from the vendors themselves usually isn’t any less secure than using the official F-Droid repos. It’s a common thing on Linux.

Dongle recomendations

I want to get started with home automation, probably based on a raspberry pi (or as of now with my banana pi which is my home server) and either openHAB or home assistant. My goal is, first, to put some temperature/humidity sensors in varous rooms and leak detector in my basement where I had some issues with the main drain. I...

Just recently got the SONOFF-ZB Plus E dongle and it's been working well for me. I was able to flash it to use both ZigBee and Thread.
