Do you know anything about hackers? Can you jam with the console cowboys in cyberspace? Ever read Neuromancer? Ever experienced the new wave? Next wave? Dream wave? Or cyberpunk?

I would LITERALY pay for a service (within reason) that emails me, or puts calendar notifications on my calendar, about when conferences CFP opens and closes.

Let me pick the conferences I'm interested in from a menu, then just email me when the CFP opens and the closing date, maybe a weekly reminder/countdown.

Right now I use some convoluted process of tracking tweets/socials with notifications.

Perhaps this is the perfect use case for some LLM.

Do you like Amigas? Do you like music? This past weekend was PTWeekender where a bunch of DJs do live streams of some sick tracks with Amigas!

Here's a playlist of a bunch of them!

If you weren't aware, every year @dnalounge puts on a Cyberdelia to celebrate the movie Hackers.

The best part? The recordings of the event are hosted on the @internetarchive : https://archive.org/details/DNALOUNGE-2023-09-01?webamp=default

(and even better Internet Archive has a WebAmp player for that perfect 90s vibe)

So I like to help folks with their talks, I'm a mentor for BlackHat and BsidesLV. I typically tell people not to leave time for questions, and finally, I found a chart that expresses exactly why

Strongly recommend you read this post by @pluralistic about the HOPE conference.

https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/19/hope-less/#hack-the-planet

I also just love this quote

But after the 2018 HOPE, the Hotel Pennsylvania was demolished to make way for the Penn15 (no, really) skyscraper, a vaporware mega-tower planned as a holding pen for luxury shopping and empty million-dollar condos sold to offshore war-criminals as safe-deposit boxes in the sky. The developer, Vornado (no, really) hasn't actually done all that – after demo'ing the Hotel Pennsylvania, they noped out, leave a large, unusable scar across midtown.

One of my favorite pieces of video game trivia is that the original Pitfall game is just a roguelite with the seed hard-coded (cause it was the most fun, according to the author)

Most of Google’s $700M antitrust settlement will go to Play Store users

Play Store users can expect at least $2 in "unnecessary" fees refunded.

On this day in 1995 hackers around the world prevented an ecological disaster at Ellingson Mineral.

So twitter started paying for users who had lots of "engagement" which means you either get a lot of shit takes or garbage like "what's the best pizzeria" type stuff.

And in a race to the bottom, it looks like reddit is getting in on it. I can't wait to see for-profit social media die.

I hate to say it, but with the progress of enshitification it is probably in your games best interest to not learn some proprietary engine. Unreal is watching the Unity shenanigans very closely and if unity pulls it off you know damn well unreal will follow suit.

So, at @dnalounge they celebrated Hackers earlier this month with Cyberdelia (an annual celebration) and I've got two amazing links for you:

  1. https://archive.org/details/hypercard_neuroblast-cyberdelia Someone was handing out these floppies with this hypercard zine on it, truly amazing. With articles written by @jwz themselves

  2. The whole thing (all 7 hours) was recorded and put up on the archive: https://archive.org/details/DNALOUNGE-2023-09-01

Being a Mod at Reddit is like running your own BBS in the 90s, but AT&T owns the 486 you run it on, have credentials for the machine and can kick you off and ban you at a moments notice, also they hate you.

Every bank CTO is like "We can save millions in moving off the mainframe and to the cloud." That CTO is an idiot:

  1. It will take longer than that CTOs tenure, 100%

  2. The millions spent on IBM mainframes will ultimately be cheaper than your cloud bills + the conversation, and once you realize its more expensive it'll be too late to go back

  3. Hope you like fines when you can't do overnight settlement

  4. Be ready to issue a press release that says "Users can't access their account details because Azure is down"
