There is something very zen about browsing Mastodon entirely on Tut.

Nobody talks about how cyberpunk it is that nearly every computer has a built-in process or chip called a "Randomness Engine."

here's a futuristic situation: i just generated an image of myself in order to get a sense of how i'd look if i took the time to grow my beard out. i learned that i hate how i'd look. that just saved me a lot of time, unironically.

Considering USA’s claim to love individualism, they sure spend a lot of money and energy trying to make people conform, uniform, and be uninformed.

mitch ,
@mitch@posts.dumb.stuff.donaberger.xyz avatar

@GGMcBG growing up here, i always understood it to be the cult of individuality. i have seen it turn reasonable people into little Himmlers.

I'm sitting outside at midnight on a late spring evening, just smelling the petrichor as it flows from the nearby forest. This forest sits alongside a major city artery, carrying headlamps through the evening like ventricles. Times like these, the city reminds me so much of an ecosystem by itself.

TIL that 1% of the population has a direct aluminum contact allergy.

mitch OP ,
@mitch@posts.dumb.stuff.donaberger.xyz avatar

@jordan I learned this in tandem with watching a factory tour for a wheelchair manufacturer. Apparently there is an entire class of "medical grade aluminums" that are catalyzed in special ways to make the aluminum oxide coating much thicker and stronger, like an enamel. I thought that was pretty cool. There are so many hidden design requirements in so many products we interact with.

Cool. It's raining pretty hard in Philly today and a crow just flew under my porch and hung out with me. I guess it was trying to take a break from the rain.

Project idea: armed drones that will loiter above the stop sign in front of my house. Once a car runs the stop sign, it will drop a nickel-cadmium blade from 500 ft up, disabling the vehicle's engine through kinetic transfer.

Expensive? Yes. Petty? Yes. Dangerous? Yes. Sorry, what was the question?

I think tomorrow is the day I wipe my ancient Ubuntu install (circa 2016, though, it was maintained and updated) and move over to Debian 12. just been waiting for a free day to focus on it.

mitch OP ,
@mitch@posts.dumb.stuff.donaberger.xyz avatar

@khird tbh, that's sort of what i'm looking for. i wanna set-it-and-forget it for a lot of things, since my server has really standardized around offering a few services to the house. i've debated Arch but I know for a fact I don't have the patience to re-learn it right now, haha.

Been trying to figure out how to phrase the next era of my / studio

If it's my partner and I making games, but she's a very silent artist partner and wants zero exposure, do I just roll the "single creator" angle?

It feels weird, but also a lot of single creator games sure have lots of contractors so shrug?

Like if I say "couple", EVERYONE gonna zero in on that. The angle they'll want is couple interviews. And, well. No.

mitch ,

@glassbottommeg piano is the dark souls of instruments

mitch ,
@mitch@posts.dumb.stuff.donaberger.xyz avatar

@glassbottommeg fwiw, I voted 'dont claim solo', but I have to wonder if this is a good opportunity to bring out 'co-op'? As in, "a game development co-op," vs 'studio'.

In the fine art world, that's pretty much how it works. Lots of people work together and contribute, but the director or auteur gets the name credit. Like how Warhol had other artists he gregariously collaborated with. They're credited on the work, but it's still 'a Warhol.'

In response to this post I wrote this morning, I keep seeing folks saying, “just switch to DuckDuckGo!”

DuckDuckGo is not a 1:1 solve. There is too much important information buried specifically in Google that it does not have direct access to, including:

  • 400+ years of book scans, including of copyrighted material not available elsewhere
  • The largest easily accessible history of Usenet
  • The easiest-to-use archive of patent filings
  • A number of newspaper scans not available elsewhere
mitch ,
@mitch@posts.dumb.stuff.donaberger.xyz avatar

@ernie Jesus, you're right. I never thought about Google being the last remaining public archive of Usenet. That might actually be solvable, thanks to the many Usenet providers still out there.

You know how powerful politicians throw their wife under the bus when they get caught doing something borderline treasonous?

Once, just once, I wanna see the wife bite back by publicly divorcing the dude and going on record with ALL the dirt. I hate thinking that they're in on it, or cool with taking the blame.
