"Elon Musk can't invent"

RSS and OPML ( libranet.de )

Can somebody explain me how OPML works for RSS? Are these files usually imported into the RSS reader apps or are they used where they are? If I import multiple OPML files with multiple feeds, will the feeds from the first OPML be overwritten by those in the second one or will they add up? Will article read/unread status be...

petrescatraian OP ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@perishthethought I see. So the feeds from the OPML file are imported into the reader's own database, right?

petrescatraian OP ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@perishthethought thank you!

@tardigrada slightly funny thing: neom in Romanian kinda translates as non-human which seems perfectly fit to the company's overall project.

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@apis weird that it doesn't show. I said it is translated into n o n - h u m a n

Hope it's not blocked again in any way if I type it like this...

Probably your app, idk. On my end I see it fine on beehaw's website.

@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

Yeah, that's what I intended to do.

Seems someone went ahead of me and archived the very same link, if anyone stumbles across it afterwards:

I did learn about it (at school, maybe? Or I can't remember), but totally forgot it until I saw buses and trams with the European and the National flags stuck to their side mirrors.

@hedge Not really a video, but the 1st pic in this article seems the best for me.

How can I see if my phone has an IR Blaster? 😁

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@Riven Probably phones without headphone jacks are those that can no longer be used as regular FM radios - as the antenna was actually the headset (at least that's my experience) - and another reason why phones without the jack suck. Never had a phone with a built-in FM antenna FWIW.

But yea, I do get your point. Phones could do so much more than accessing Facebook, Instagram and posting photos there or something like that.

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@Riven Yea, it also needs the software. Here in Romania, every phone I've owned had an FM Radio app preinstalled, including the current one. Didn't try any jackless phone to see if it's there as well, and if yes, how does it work.

I want to settle on a browser independent bookmark solution. What do you suggest? ( libranet.de )

I got inspired by this article to look into such a solution. I tend to use different browsers on different devices, so using one browser vendor everywhere is not the solution. Main reasons are storage space available, device performance and basically general opinion about a certain browser or another, that might change or not. I...

@shortwavesurfer That would be cool, but if I was to make some quick saves for something I was looking for, this wouldn't be just as easy.

@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@shortwavesurfer Yea, indeed. Thank you for the suggestion!

petrescatraian ,

0AD I guess

Desktop mode so far. Didn't try it directly yet.

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

Yea 😁 There are plenty of other FOSS games that are also in the Steam Store as well, like OpenTTD, Battle for Wesnoth or Red Eclipse

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@Blaze A colleague of mine had the M8. Man, what a great device! It had awesome cameras for that time and could even record videos in slow motion. Nowadays, I take this feature for granted for the last 3 phones I had, but at that time this just seemed revolutionary!

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@shortwavesurfer Guess you're not paying your taxes then.

@Blaze

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@shortwavesurfer There's no way you compare something as mundane as this to mass murder. And be sure that every country's government has all the means necessary to prosecute you for stuff like this, sooner or later.

Anyway, for me there are some useful such apps that I use:

  • One is for my city's public transit - really useful, it even displays the vehicle position in real time so you can make up your mind on your route.
  • One is for train tickets (you can also do related stuff as well, like check if your train is late).
  • One is to check if there are any breakdowns in the heat distribution system to see if I won't have heat overnight.

I'm sure as hell there are some others, but I did not need them so far. If the government was to spy on me, it could install some malware or some sort without resorting to the Play Store.

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@shortwavesurfer That depends on which country you fill your taxes in.

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@shortwavesurfer Even when those taxes are going into the healthcare system?

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@shortwavesurfer And they need taxes to authorize that. Makes perfect sense.

petrescatraian , (edited )
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@mormund I used to store them in a paper notebook, away from the prying eyes of malware and other shenanigans. Now I also have them in a password manager for easy access in case I need them, if the account supports 2FA TOTP.

@Rikj000

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@0x815 fair enough. If USA did it when it invaded Iraq, I cannot see a reason Europe won't do it when it comes for helping Ukraine. If the lunatic comes to the White House, then Europe will be on its own against Russia anyway.

@GadgeteerZA it's not really that new, it's been around for as long as Mastodon got the first boost back in Autumn 2022 (at least that's when I first heard about it, something like that). There's plenty of other microblogging servers out there, as microblogging is overwhelmingly served via AP and not only. There's even a Nextcloud app for that.

Check out the list below and sort by Social network (micro):

@GadgeteerZA Oh, I see. Thanks for the extra info! 😁

@Blaze I'm not buying phones that often, but I recently changed to a Nokia G22 (yes, they also have phones with jack), and one of the things that made me decide on that was the jack as well. I got a pair of wireless headsets from work and I can say they're pretty good, but I am still not over the thought that I have one more thing to charge its battery every once in a while. Wired headphones are pretty much okay and I don't see any problem with them that would make me switch (at least right now).

Edit: I almost forgot. I also listen to the (FM) Radio, so I need the wired headsets to be used as an antenna.

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@Blaze It is larger than I thought, indeed 😁 but I see they still tend to stick with stock Android even though they're not really releasing any android one phones any longer.

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@BearOfaTime That's odd. My experience with micro USB cables is actually the poorer one. Cables would have their pins worn down all the time and become loose. My current phone has USB C and I had no problem so far. I use the same cable since I purchased it.

@ipacialsection I already have the debs, just looking for a repo for them to store them in a kind of more useful way. I was looking at openbuildservice.org, but I'm unsure about their terms. If I have a few games as debs that I legally got, and add them there, will they risk being taken down because of piracy? Or would I be able to set a private repo as well so only I could access it?

@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@ericjmorey Thanks!

@jeena I only use DeepL to translate and that's it. I also started taking notes in .md files, so that could make for a good use case in the future if there was an AI that I could use without connecting to the internet (e.g. to only let me tell stuff based on the files I got). Otherwise I am pretty reticent on AI. Perhaps I watched too many fiction movies, but I am afraid it will become too sentient and somehow escape the human oversight, thus creating havoc in our lives.

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@jeena it doesn't connect to any server even when you're online?

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@jeena cool. I think I will look into it. Thanks! 😁

@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@hedge Wow, this is big. Fedi needs more macroblogging options to compensate for the domination of Mastodon and other microblogging platforms. And also it being another corporate actor like Meta, but smaller, will create the incentive for Meta to play more fairly in the long run and not EEE the Fediverse with Threads, just like it did with XMPP by integrating it under Facebook almost a decade ago. This is exactly what we need to become and stay mainstream.

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

Fuck yeah, let's do that shit again!
