The UK does a "bike to work" scheme, you get an interest free loan from your employer that is repaid directly from your salary before your tax is deducted, so it reduces your tax bill every month. The loan money can be spent at any bike shop on any bike that meets the criteria. It's extremely popular and works well.

Went to the Life in the Roman Legion exhibition at the British Museum, which was excellent, then lunch in a nearby Italian restaurant and home watching the cricket (England women v Pakistan women, it's not going well for England).

You'll be fine! And I hereby give you permission to slip off without saying goodbye if you need to. Just follow up with a note or call saying you had a great time and the host was so busy being fabulous that you didn't want to interrupt.

If it were me, I would also take my own AF drinks, ones that I like, so I know for sure that I won't get there and go "nothing to drink, guess I'll have a glass of wine."

Coffee in the morning and herbal tea in the afternoon works for me.

I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't take any drugs which are illegal where I am, there's no way I'd give up caffeine in the mornings!

In my experience, willpower alone isn't going to work. You use up willpower in a thousand different ways from the minute you open your eyes and get out of bed, and by the time your personal witching hour comes round, you're all out of the willpower required to resist that glass of wine, and by the time you've drunk it, you're definitely out of willpower to refuse the second or third or fuck it, might as well finish the bottle.

So you support your willpower, and strengthen it with scaffolding, sober supports, tools, stuff you can lean on when the cravings hit.

I like a liquorice and mint for after dinner. I'm not a fan of straight mint but I do like the addition of liquorice.

Bird and Blend do loads of different ones so I'm trying out different ones from them at the moment, I love their Cherry Cola Bottles and Bears Like Marmalade.

Here it was for the London Assembly and Mayor, other places had local councils and the police and crime commissioner, and there was a by-election in one constituency.

I now have a slightly regrettable haircut, but it'll grow. Note to self, when you're on the tail end of a chest infection and didn't sleep well the night before, don't go and get your hair cut.
