Among Isekai titles, stands out as a show that isn’t a one-man show centered around a single character who came to a new world, and one that raises the stakes without appearing too dark.
It addresses the topic of fighting in an actual war with seriousness, and manages to NOT have the existence of healing magic make that seem too inconsequential.

I really liked the characters and how they all bonded and influenced each other. The (entirely unromantic) relationship of Usato and Rose is a gem.

I’d happily welcome a second season.

The by usually have a high quality, but what I’m most amazed by is how good all the openings are.
I’ve seen enough openings that are just character slideshows which are just roughly attuned to a more or less catchy song.
But all of Mappa’s openings that I can think of combine really good music, striking visuals that often don’t fully make sense until you have watched the whole show, and the video is carefully matched to the beat, mood and lyrics of the song.

All in all might be interesting but the mood it creates is an utterly miserable one.
I’m almost up to date with the manga and the gist is:

There is nothing to look forward to, no clear end goal to root for. The “good guys“ are always struggling to prevent the worst and only sometimes manage to do so. Characters are likely to not survive and their relationships are mostly practical.

Even other popular Shounen that are rather dark are not that void of human warmth and hope for the future.

I guess for some that’s the interesting part because it’s different, but I don’t like it.

4 episodes in I still quite enjoy . It shows that even a rather basic Isekai premise can be made into a good story if it takes the setting seriously and doesn’t put in all the annoying tropes.
I’m incredibly thankful that the main character got only a few basic skills and really has to train to get better - I really don’t get why this is so rare.
And while I initially found it a bit off-putting, I’ve grown to like the less polished style with all the angular faces. The goofy scenes are clearly also to save money for elaborate, detailed drawings and animation but it works for me.

I just re-read the final chapters of my own fanfiction which puts the characters in an only slightly different universe / timeline.

It kind of dragged me down because while it does not have a bad ending in the classic sense, it is overall rather gloomy.
