I have an annoying thing on my MacBook where video seems to be jumping back and forth in brightness/saturation. Feels like HDR is being turned on and off every few seconds depending on what is on screen. A quick Google search led me nowhere. Does anyone know what my issue is and how to fix it?

Things I've checked that haven't worked:
❌ True tone
❌ Auto-brightness

@Techaltar I got some very weird artifacts from a terminal program. KiTTY, I think? Took me weeks to figure out

@Techaltar you’re watching it wrong.

@Techaltar Weird 🤔Does it happen with any video player? Does it happen with the camera feed in photo booth?

@t_var_s Any video player I've tried, even in the browser. Haven't seen it with the camera

@Techaltar is that on the builtin screen or an external one?
If it’s only happening with an external screen, I’d try with a different cable.

@golden_trashcan built-in

@Techaltar
True tone and auto brightness off.
Otherwise don't know...

@Techaltar@mas.to avatar

@felixsteininger Sadly neither

Mister_Eel ,

@Techaltar my guess would also be something to do with auto brightness, I’d turn it off for a few days just to see if that fixes it or not.
Then you have a little more information and might have some luck with a google search.
There’s always the Apple Store, I’ve heard they’ve got pretty good customer service so maybe they can help

@Techaltar I weirdly have the exact same problem in Manjaro on my pc, also with an HDR monitor. Not sure why, but the display brightness seems to be linked to the contents of the screen. This means that typing white on black text will cause the display brightness to "flutter"

@jaydead Oof, I thankfully only seem to have this with video. That sounds even more annoying!

@Techaltar @jaydead If you’ve only seen this with video, then yeah it sounds like it’s almost certainly switching to HDR for an HDR video.

Does it stop if you go to System Settings > Displays and change the preset for the built in display from the XDR profile to “Apple Display”?

Techaltar OP ,

@forgifuzzbutt @jaydead I'm not sure which option you are referring to. Is it here?

@Techaltar @jaydead Oh that’s interesting - is yours an Apple Silicon MacBook Pro?

It would’ve been the Preset option where it lists “Colour LCD”.

This is what it looks like on mine, which their XDR display is HDR compatible, which is why I would’ve assumed that’s what you were seeing on yours is it switching back and forth.

Maybe it’s just acting weird trying to emulate HDR in SDR color space?

@Techaltar

Maybe disable auto brightness? Or True Tone

I disabled everything on my phone and still apple adjust brightness levels depending on heat

Techaltar OP ,
@Techaltar@mas.to avatar

@Openhuman Sadly neither :/

@Techaltar maybe use to get a bigger audience or ask in their forums next…
