hi, I'm putting the rest of the reading every #MDZS name (correctly) on Dreamwidth because navigating threads is awful and I needed to edit some things from WWX and LWJ anyway. I added their birth names too! I'll be adding more characters when I feel like it, but the next one is going to be Jiang Cheng
ok thank you @geraineon for inspiring this thread, so here's the #MDZS characters but I read their names all wrong (in any reading that isn't Mandarin). names are written in traditional because it makes it easier for me to search for them. Old Chinese (OC) and Middle Chinese (MC) reconstructions are by Zhengzhang because I think they're more readable than Baxter. romanizations for other dialects are from Wiktionary. Japanese readings are based on Kan-on, not JP audio drama readings
I've read #mdzs#svsss and now #tgcf and I have to say: So far I find Xie Lian the most interesting character of them all. Not to say the others are bad. It's just that Xie Lian is so fascinating! #mxtx#danmei
Hahahha… I’d DEFINITELY forgotten that Mo Xuanyu is still described as taller than average. The coming back as a twink narrative weighs too heavily 😂 #mdzs
Question for those who have also read #mdzs (especially if it was in chinese): when the Cloud Eecesses first comes up and it explains that Wei Wuxian and other guys his age were sent to study there, do you interpret the three months as they were all sent there for three months, or as Wei Wuxian himself being there for three months?
The donghua definitely takes the later approach because Jiang Cheng returns a year later, but the wording in the book has always made me wonder.
I like the style mixing pseudo period language with very modern internet speach patterns
so Wei Wuxian is a massive bitch and Lan Wangji is a bit Vulcan? Nice.
alright, Lord-of-the-Rings grade names, everyone has at least 20
I read them mounting their swords as "they put them on their backs" until I went "record scratch whatthefuck?!"
I went in, thinking Wuxian might be constructed as being actually shady (lol that first sentence) and now predict the backstory is going to meowmeow-never-did-anything-wrong him
The way ghosts are apparently mostly zombies is nicely hands on. Or hands off, haha. No mysterious spirits, just a few undead and their autonomous body parts. They might be a problem, kill and stink, but they aren't uncanny. I like that.
Ack, looking back via the dead girl's ghost is painful as we know they're doomed. The part before was fun, nicely gorey, and the twist was a surprise for me. And I really like it when couples acquire "old couple behaviour" before they become a couple and everyone else except themselves notices that. Good trope! 😌
Also: A-Qing has such Angoulême vibes :'|
I'll add a more specific hashtag to these toots so you can find them or mute them. (I'm going to try and keep my reactions as plot free as possible but of course it depends on what's a spoiler for you.) Hm. Yes it's silly but it's also unique:
I'm scared! I'm stressed out! I'm too anxious to read! Xingchen knows now and Xue Yang is coming back! I might pee myself. :blobcatreading: :blobcatscared:
I'm through The Sad Part and I'm relieved we get some comical relief.
I hadn't anticipated it, was just excited to finally get to know a conscious Wen Ning (because he's so mysterious), but of course Lan Wangji is drunk again and kicks him again :')
I am suspicuous now that he might be jeallous? Is it jeallousy, not some old grudge from when apparently everyone tried (and succeeded) killing each other?
It's very funny in any case. I'm also hoping Wangji can finally be made to say how he recognised Wei Wuxian.
“Don’t listen to him,” Wei Wuxian said. “Let me tell you—once you’re older, you’ll discover that there are so many people out there you still want to beat up, but you’ll have to force yourself to get along with them. So hit whoever you want to, to your heart’s content, while you’re still young.[...]”
How cute is the concept of that little paper man magic and what WWX does with it! :blobcataww:
Jin Guangyao is really some super creep?! O_O
Nooo so much suspense, aaargh, has paper!WWX been found out?! Eeek!
I'm in awe about how the plot and its backflashes dance around that huge fight/battle/war? with the Wen clan. Makes the reader curious and theorise about wtf happened, only handing out clues:
When they found out the Wens had moved that water-hazard, was that the start of a war? And Wen Ning is, like, WWX's best friend, was he fighting his own family?
This is such a good technique of making the readers guess, I kinda want to steal it >:)
I love the sleeves. :') Why have a bag of infinite hold if you can just use your sleeves.
Grrrrr, I really fell for thinking Jin Guangyao must be "a good guy" because of his friendship with Lan Xichen. We got duped, Xichen! >:(
Haha, WWX watching past events: "Where's Wangji? No Wangji? Aw. Oh there's Wangji! yay!" spends 2 paragraphs waxing poetry about what he looks like :')
The year is about to end, and it's time for a #2023Recap <;
I know I'll be busy in the next few days (with prayer that 2024 is kinder to me than 2023, in some respects), so I'll leave this here a bit earlier than usual <:
