does anyone have any sense of what general region of china might be set in? I know the time period is very "handwave handwave don't worry about it," so is region similar, where it's so vague that it could be anywhere? I don't recall if we get any clues that narrow down the region at all

I listened to the first episode of The Scum Villain's Self-Summarizing Podcast today and I adore it already omg. only four episodes so far alas but it consists of one person summarizing svsss chapter by chapter to someone else who does not know it and it's SUCH a great way to relive the story!

Delicious in Dungeon (aka Dungeon Meshi), by Ryoko Kui, translated by Taylor Engel

In a world of dnd-ish dungeon crawls, one person's dream is to cook and eat monsters to discover what kinds of food you can make of them. Follow this adventuring party as they travel deep into a dungeon, eating well as they go, on a quest to save a party member who was eaten by a dragon!

I adored every bit of this manga!!! The main characters are all a delight, and it's the kind of story where the author sees and shows you the inherent personness of all characters, including antagonists. And the world created to make sense of the dungeon's existence is fascinating, as are all the ways the ecosystems within the dungeon are expanded upon to make sense of the creatures living within it.

And it's a story that knows what its themes are, too, and is able to tie them all together in extremely satisfying ways in the climax of the narrative!

my dad is looking for more historical cdramas to watch, and I told him I'd see if I could find some recs for him.

he's looking for cdramas that are available to watch free online (eg on viki), he prefers historicals, he enjoys some fighting, and previous shows he's enjoyed include The Untamed, Nirvana in Fire, Imperial Coroner, and Who Rules the World.

For those of you who watch more tv than me, what would you suggest?

listening to a podcast right now about the fashion industry, aimed at a normie audience to help them understand the industry better in order to make more informed choices about the clothing they buy, and it's like......... gosh it's baffling to me that many people apparently do not know that polyester is straight-up plastic?

also the sheer strength of the podcast's Individual Consumerism Is The Way To Save The World perspective caught me SO off guard

but it's really interesting and I AM definitely learning things, because the host is someone who works within the fashion industry and has inside knowledge!

I've fallen behind on but I really did want to rec Tai Sui so here goes:

Tai Sui, by Priest, is a xianxia novel set in a world on the brink of industrial revolution. It gets called steampunk which I guess isn't wrong, but it's not the "look we have gears on our airships" sort of steampunk, it's more about the societal impact when magic (and the society held up by a few elites) is impacted by a growing technology.

At the same time, the high fantasy pieces of the worldbuilding are really cool too. It will look familiar (if you read cultivation novels) but there are some surprises going on there.

Tai Sui addresses xianxia's class issues head on, and makes you really think about what it would mean to leave the mortal world behind as a cultivator, and what it would mean for the common people left behind, too.

The main character, Xi Ping, is a delight. He's such a troll and he never stops being a troll even when things get serious--but at the same time, he cares so much.

everybody should be able to access academic articles free of charge. or at the very least they should be available through public libraries! (they should be so inexpensive that public libraries can afford them easily within their budgets without having to make any cuts to other services!)

yeah maybe not everyone in the general populace would want to read such things, but being able to access peer-reviewed information would be such a boon to so many people

folks who are trying to understand their own medical condition when doctors aren't being helpful

folks who are trying to improve their job skills through personal education

folks who are trying to do their own research and need to be able to access past data but don't have the backing of a research institution

folks who have weird hobbies and want to know things about the world

and more!
