European competition authorities have blocked an acquisition by Dutch travel company Booking.com as scrutiny on Big Tech companies heats up.

Amsterdam-based online travel agent Booking.com was prohibited from buying Swedish peer Etraveli.

This is the first tech deal to be blocked since the European Union introduced new competition rules for the sector.

Important step in the enforcement of the Digital Markets Act: The EU Commission today announced the 22 platform services that will have to comply with the DMA from March 2024.

Until then, the Commission must ensure that sufficient staff are available for enforcement and that third parties are actively involved. Only then can the be a success!

Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta, Microsoft

These are the first 6 companies designated as ‘gatekeepers' under the Digital Markets Act.

They have 6 months to ensure their core platform services comply with our rules, including:

✔ Allowing users to unsubscribe and remove pre-installed services
✔ Allowing the download of alternative app stores

❌ Banning tracking outside of their services without consent
❌ Stopping ranking their products more favourably

    We reached a new milestone in ensuring the openness of digital markets.

    Last week, 7 companies notified us they qualify as 'Gatekeepers' under the Digital Market Act.

    We will check their submission before designating them. They will have 6 months to comply with the and, among others, be unable to:

    • lock in users in their ecosystem;
    • decide which apps you need pre-installed or which app store to use;
    • treat their own products and services more favourably.

    So for some reason a well-known US tech blogger thinks it is better to have a data collecting monster launching a new app than a government that at least tries to protect its citizens privacy and rights. And somehow he also thinks going to libraries is an insult to people?

    This might be one of THE worst takes an US tech bro did for a while.
