#NowPlaying Fela Kuti - Zombie #vinyl#funk@vinylrecords (and fondly remembering hearing Bootsy Collins, when asked whether on his first visit to Nigeria, with James Brown, he had had opportunity to go see Fela, reply: “did I go? did I ever leave?!”)
Found this at a shop that sells camping gear, used stereos, and vinyl. They have an old lazy dog that naps by the door to greet customers. All fits with the mood of this one.
#NowPlaying finally home to spin the haul of records I saved for Xmas. Leading off, one of my all-time favorite albums first released on vinyl in 2023: MEDESKI MARTIN & WOOD - SHACK-MAN (Real Gone Music; originally on CD, Gramavision, 1996). The volume is awfully quiet due to 54 min of music being crammed onto 2 sides, but it sounds ok with the stereo cranked up. I'm just glad to have it on #vinyl. Thanks Santa! #MMW#jazz#groove@vinylrecords
@vinylrecords#NowPlaying one more tonight, SHARON JONES & The DAP-KINGS - JUST DROPPED IN (TO SEE WHAT CONDITION MY RENDITION WAS IN) (Daptone, 2020). A posthumous collection of covers commissioned for movies, commercials, samples, or tribute albums (e.g., Prince's "Take Me with U"), or that the band recorded on their own (e.g., Bob Marley's "It Hurts to be Alone"). #SharonJones#Daptone#soul#funk#r&b #vinyl
#NowPlaying Grant Green - Alive! (Blue Note, 1970). Recorded live at the Cliché Lounge, Newark, NJ on 8/15/1970. Jazz-funk (or is it funky jazz?) was my gateway from hip-hop to jazz. The closing track Down Here On The Ground is instantly recognizable from the sample on A Tribe Called Quest - Vibes and Stuff. Anything with Idris Muhammad on drums is worth listening to. #jazz#funk#hiphop#GrantGreen@vinylrecords
