Just arrived today, Independent Bookshop Edition of You Like it Darker, from the marvelous Stephen King, Maine's master of the macabre (hey, it's Friday, we feel like splashing out on some alliteration!)
Dance with me until the moon hides its face,
And the sun attempts to quicken the pace.
From the sunlight, the vampire turns his face,
And dancers twirl to the light’s frenzied pace.
2024 has been a busy year, with the "completion" of The Nod/Wells Timelines, the release of my first two audiobooks, and the announcement of "8" and its associated "story singles" but there's even more to come! Give me a follow so you don't miss anything!
Writing a horror novella with a romance subplot made me realize... I haven't read any modern romance novels! Need to expand my horizon so I am super open to recommendations!
Alright it is twenty minutes until #MONSTERDON, which means if you don't want to see a bunch of nerds watching a monster movie you should set up a filter!
My #bookreview is brief/won't spoil, to spread good, great, & spectacular #horror#books far & wide.
💙📚 HOT DEMON BITCHES NEAR YOU from J.E. Erickson is an exuberant blast of gore & grue. The Horrors are heavy here, but balanced with deliciously devilish delights & a LOT of heart. (Lots of OTHER body parts, too.) You'll be disturbed, delighted, horrified- but also cackling. HELL, yeah! (Self-published)
Author copies arrived of this bulky anthology of African ghost stories. Now I can say that my story was published in the same book as the legend, Amos Tutuola!
INTERTWINED NARRATIVES OF MOTHERHOOD and madness weave a subtly unsettling spell in this little gem of a novel of psychological horror and suspense. B PLUS
@bookstodon My #review of Indian Burial Ground by Nick Medina is now live! This would be even creepier and more tense if the narrative had been arranged differently, but otherwise it's pretty awesome.
Dread is the only Books of Blood story where I have to gird my loins before I do a re-read (jokes about "dreading" it could be made 😝). I find it genuinely disturbing in a way that I don't his other works.
My #bookreview is brief/won't spoil, to spread good, great, & spectacular #horror#books far & wide.
WHEN THE DEVIL is a novelette from Emma E. Murray that packs many horrors inside of its compelling, feverish intensity. Libby's world is dark and cruel, and any peace, joy, or deliverance comes with a price. Devils abound, but sometimes the fruit they offer makes the damnation worth it. (Shortwave Publishing)
This fabulous news just dropped - Tiffany Morris is an Indigenous Voices Award Finalist! Congrats to Tiffany and the other amazing finalists!

I started watching this one last night but dozed off halfway through. Not because I was bored but because I'm at that age where I shouldn't start a movie past 9pm. I'll finish it tonight. It gave off "Talk To Me" vibes with bad things that happen when people contact the dead. #baghead#shudder#horror@horror
‘A Different World’: Dorothy K. Haynes’s Domestic Horror
Timothy C. Baker, GOTHIC STUDIES 24/1, 2022
“Although Haynes published widely in the middle decades of the twentieth century, and her work was republished in two ‘best of’ collections in 1981 and 1996, her stories remain underexamined. At her best, Haynes might be thought of as Scotland’s answer to Shirley Jackson…”
HORRORS BOTH HUMAN AND SUPERNATURAL roll out with a relentless, breathtaking pace in this final installment of the Indian Lake Trilogy. As ever, Stephen Graham Jones’s deft characterization and vivid sense of place drive the chill deep. B PLUS
So Ray Garton, who unfortunately passed away this week, did a lot of ghost-writing in his younger days, which got him hired by Ed & Lorraine Warren in the 90's.
We used to talk on the BirdSite & he told me that Ed point-blank told him everyone who contacted them was nuts & the writers were there to make shit up so people would believe it was real. The real Ed & Lorraine Warren, everybody.
Anyway, Ray went on to base characters in one of my favorite haunted house books, The Loveliest Dead, on the Warrens & by loosely, I mean he pretty much just changed their names 🤭
