Immigrants are not stealing jobs, or mooching off of the government.

Immigrants tend to work in fields with the most unmet demand for workers, and are more likely to have jobs than US-born Americans

Apple’s Vision Pro is a bad product with an even worse vision for the future of computation.

New sales numbers prove it’s a failure, but more than that it shows the idea of tech’s inevitability is a myth. We have the collective power to stop tech that doesn’t serve us.

@parismarx It seems like the biggest failure is that it was pitched at the mass market without a good use case. VR is niche, and it’s mostly useful for video games and in the design industry, broadly constituted. Apple has little consumer trust in the former, but they do have a foothold in the design world, and the Vision Pro might have some success there; However, their marketing barely mentions industry, and it’s not a focus of their developer support.

Vaccines work!

@luckytran The HPV vaccine works well, as do several others. Some work reasonably well. There are probably some that are ineffective and dangerous, but they aren’t in common use due to that. I worry that using such general messaging ends up giving cover to vaccine-only strategies, like the ones deployed by western governments against covid.

I've grudgingly come around to the notion that there is only one way out of the ransomware problem: Make paying a ransom illegal. This is not very different from laws that make it illegal for US companies to pay bribes to foreign officials.

I really don't see any other way out of this mess. Yes, some victims will unfortunately ignore any laws that say they can't pay, but enforcement probably will not be hard.

What will be difficult are the situations where peoples' lives are at stake in ransomware incidents This sounds callous, but we can't afford to take the short view here anymore, and our other alternatives aren't great either.

I'm quite certain this is an unpopular view, but we have already seen the cost of doing nothing. At least in the interests of congruity for our financial sanctions vs Russia, we should probably make this change sooner rather than later.

@briankrebs That’s not a bad idea abstractly, but if you don’t have a comprehensive package, you’ll end up with a lot of catastrophic data loss. That sort of policy should be combined with regulations requiring robust recovery measures, like back-ups, and widespread support for such efforts, like training programs and grants.

@pluralistic @CynAq @baldur Unionism, consumer choice, regulation, and competition have been tried for the past 200 years, and have never yielded any durable gains. The system clearly cannot be made to work, and it is not nihilistic to abandon it and attempt to institute a new one.

A French documentary is examining how TikTok is being used to sway Taiwan's voters away from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the coming 2024 presidential elections and mold young minds to embrace a Chinese annexation of Taiwan https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/5052852

@taylorlorenz Mass communication technology has always been used by various groups to promote various points of view. There’s nothing sinister about it. This is really little more than a former colonial power fear-mongering about them and their allies not having a monopoly on political communication.
