I feel conflicted about this because I know journalism is in a rough spot, but I also hate the online ads so much. Usually I’d say this would be a nudge to force them to change course, but given the media’s in such dire straits, I’m not so sure this time.

@wjmaggos I don’t actually think that’s a solution, and requires setting up a massive convoluted new infrastructure. I actually think it’s a mix of direct subscription and public funding, in part funded by taxes of digital advertising revenue.

When Phil Spencer took over Xbox, he sold himself as a fellow gamer to win player support. He used that vibe to convince them industry consolidation would benefit everyone.

But now we’re seeing the real costs: layoffs, closures, and fewer games. Spencer was always serving the company.

Swedish Tesla technicians “described increasing pressure to fix more cars in less time, which they said forced them to take shortcuts, skip breaks and stay late. They’d seen colleagues get fired for reasons that they said seemed arbitrary. Two said they’d spoken up about these issues and were deprived of raises as a result.”

    The United States wants the world to choose: either they accept the dominance of Silicon Valley or fall into the hands of scary Chinese tech. But that choice makes no sense.

    If we want better tech, it must be rejected in favor of another model that breaks up the monopolies and gives countries more power to shape their own technological futures.

    I don’t often share the fanblogs, but this is a good look behind the scenes: Elon Musk has been absent from Tesla for the past year, but now he’s reasserting himself by doing mass layoffs with little regard for the effects on the business. It’s a mess.

    This is truly one of the more baffling decisions I’ve seen in a long time. Tesla is a leader in charging infrastructure, to the degree that virtually every other carmaker is even adopting its standard.

    Then Elon Musk laid off the entire Supercharger team.

    In 2021, Elon Musk said the government should end all EV subsidies. Yet new data shows Tesla received more money from Biden’s grants to expand EV charging networks than anyone else — $17 million, or 13% of all EV charging awards.

    Elon Musk is betting Tesla’s future on using self-driving fantasies to boost the share price instead of building a real car business. He just gutted the teams working on the Supercharger network (right as other companies are adopting it!) and new vehicles.

    @koen_hufkens My solution so far has been to turn off most notifications, keep the phone on silent, and only put a few apps on the home screen, leaving the rest in the library folders.

    Apple’s Vision Pro is a bad product with an even worse vision for the future of computation.

    New sales numbers prove it’s a failure, but more than that it shows the idea of tech’s inevitability is a myth. We have the collective power to stop tech that doesn’t serve us.

    Incredible that Elon Musk been saying Tesla is on the cusp on mastering self-driving for a decade, it’s still nowhere in sight, and he still tells investors if they don’t “believe Tesla is going to solve autonomy, I think they should not be an investor in the company.”

    Apple is cutting Vision Pro production as it fails to meet sales targets.

    Analysts expected it to sell 700-800k units in 2024, but it could now be as low as 400k. A lower cost model could now be pushed beyond 2025, if it ever arrives.

    Meta complied, but Elon Musk refused. The government is now planning new social media laws with bipartisan support.

    For a decade, Hollywood hasn’t aggressively fought piracy because it saw people would pay if they made them a good deal.

    But as streaming has gotten worse and more expensive, consumers turned back to file sharing. Now the industry plans to get Congress to pass new legislation to stop them.
