@pluralistic Back when I watched The Wire, the sheer existence of these ridiculous boxes was the single most difficult aspect to bring together with my naive European assumptions about what everyday life was like in a US East Coast city, especially one that is directly adjacent to the nation's capital.

Though the ones in The Wire actually had blue flashing lights on them, making them look even more ridiculous - as if a toy police car mounted on a post was supposed to prevent shootings.

Today was "measure your improvised Faraday bag" day in my surveillance class. No one came close to the attenuation of a commercial bag, or to an acceptable level of attenuation for assurance. Best container (a baking tray lined with foil and steel wool) achieved -40dB attenuation at 4GHz. (Commercial containers are typically better than -90dB)
