🔗 Thousands ordered to evacuate Fort Nelson, B.C., due to wildfire https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/zombie-fires-fort-nelson-risk-1.7200810

> Residents of the town of Fort Nelson and Fort Nelson First Nation have been ordered to evacuate due to an out-of-control wildfire in northeast B.C., according to an evacuation order issued by the Northern Rockies Regional District (NRRD) and the nation shortly before 7:30 p.m. PT on Friday.

https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2024/05/10/wildfire-evacuations-of-multiple-neighbourhoods-in-fort-nelson-b-c/

> The B.C. Wildfire Service says the tactical evacuation of “multiple neighbourhoods” is underway in Fort Nelson, as an out-of-control wildfire threatens the town in the province’s northeast. It says the fire is “highly visible” from the town, and the closure of Highway 97 is expected. The service says the fire is being fought by groundcrews and two helicopters that are bucketing water on the blaze, and air tanker support has been requested.

"Instead of recommending cleanliness to the poor, we should encourage contrary habits. In our towns we should make the streets narrower, crowd more people into the houses, and court the return of the plague... But above all we should reprobate specific remedies for ravaging diseases; and those benevolent, but much-mistaken men, who have thought they were doing a service to mankind by projecting schemes for the total expiration of particular disorders." -- Thomas Malthus, An Essay on the Principle of Population

🔗 Role of Complement-Related Inflammation and Vascular Dysfunction in Hypertension (2019) https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/HYPERTENSIONAHA.118.11210

> Taken together, complement activation promotes inflammatory factor expression in ECs, performs a chemotaxis to recruit immune cells, results in decreased eNOS expression and NO production, and finally initiates vascular injury.

> C5aR antagonist treatment attenuates macrophage recruitment in the adventitia and improves hypertension-induced adventitial collagen deposition and vascular fibrosis.

> BP elevation induces the activation of complement system and production of complement factors. These factors accelerate the progression of vascular injury and promote the development of hypertension via 2 different kinds of regulation. First, complement factors directly promote vascular cell dysfunction through their specific receptors in effector cells. However, complement activation mediates immune cell recruitment and induces inflammatory factor production in these cells. These together aggravate hypertension-induced target cardiorenal organ damage.

🔗 Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus-Kingdom of Saudi Arabia https://www.who.int/emergencies/disease-outbreak-news/item/2024-DON516

> The World Health Organization (WHO) was notified of three human cases, including one death, of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) between 10 and 17 April 2024, by the Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). All three cases were males from Riyadh aged between 56 and 60 years with underlying health conditions and were not health care workers. The three cases are epidemiologically linked to exposures in a health-care facility in Riyadh, although investigations are ongoing to verify this and understand the route of transmission. Since the beginning of the year, a total of four cases and two deaths have been reported from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The notification of these cases does not change WHO’s overall risk assessment, which remains moderate at both the global and regional levels.

Seriously, how much does a good disposable respirator cost, again? $2, if you're getting ripped off by a govt contractor? Even if all 350M USians used a brand new one every day, that's still not quite $5B a week. Worst case. (elastos for a year would cost less than 1/20th of that)

I will use my pretty severe covid brain damage as an excuse for not thinking of this years ago, but someone else's post just made me realize -- my incessant boosting is probably terrible for the zeroes timeline?

Is there something I can do about that, other than boosting everything I think is cool?

Also, unrelated but sort of related: Is there any way to limit a post to the local timeline? Feature request?

Thank you for all you do!

trendless ,
@trendless@zeroes.ca avatar

@NilaJones boosts don't actually show up on the zeroes 'This Server' timeline, so the only folks who see them are those who follow you. It's also possible for folks to turn off boosts on a per-account basis, so I don't see any objective reason why it would impact zeroes.ca negatively -- boost to your heart's content 👌

Local-only posts is indeed something a lot of folks have requested of Mastodon for years. The two most well-known forks of Mastodon (glitch and hometown) and many of the alternative fediverse microblogging servers all have it. I'd really like to migrate zeroes to glitch at some point, but it's still up in the air.

@noyes people really can't recognize how things rhyme across eras. In my lifetime at least, we've taken for granted how so many kinds of minor and even major injuries don't carry with them much risk of death or disablement, when in bygone eras even the most seemingly innocuous of them could spell trouble.

Afaict, we're right back in those supposedly bygone eras.

If I could convince every able-bodied person of one thing for their own safety, it would be this: don't need the hospital. (bonus: it would also make seeking care much safer for those who haven't that option)

@JMMaok I totally get what you're saying and accept that premise. If my experience is anything like others', those of us still wearing masks have personal experience with the hostility and violence (to varying degrees). I wouldn't necessarily define someone as anti-mask because they don't wear them, but rather because they advocate against and shame those who do. If [good] masks were mandated in healthcare, I expect most who don't currently wear them, would. As to enforcement, I'm sensitive to that consideration. Pushing back against dysregulated, vicious elements of society is never easy and it does seem that we've yet again allowed them to dictate terms. I'm not sure the dynamics of undoing the damage of anti-mask messaging at this point, but it does seem that anti-mask sentiment's primary mode of operation is societal/peer pressure -- I don't see how it wouldn't work equally and oppositely.

Seroevidence for H5N1 Influenza Infections in Humans: Meta-Analysis (2012) https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1218888

    > The prevalence of avian H5N1 influenza A infections in humans has not been definitively determined. Cases of H5N1 infection in humans confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO) are fewer than 600 in number, with an overall case fatality rate of >50%. We hypothesize that the stringent criteria for confirmation of a human case of H5N1 by WHO do not account for a majority of infections but rather the select few hospitalized cases that are more likely to be severe and result in poor clinical outcome. Meta-analysis shows that 1 to 2% of more than 12,500 study participants from 20 studies had seroevidence for prior H5N1 infection.
