a friend and I were talking about COVID precautions and they just sent me this paper which appears to raise concerns about safety and efficacy of wearing masks for COVID - does anyone here know anything about this paper + what conclusions should be drawn from it? I feel like there's probably something wrong with it given it very much is the consensus in communities I'm in (that seem to pay lots of attention to the literature) that wearing masks is a good precaution to take against COVID, but I'm not sure how to respond. is there a good analysis of the paper somewhere or anything like that?

The NIH walks back the admission of viral persistence, blames fragments for Long Covid. Implicit is the claim that there is no ongoing replication.

Bastards. Yes, the virus is still replicating. That's where the fragments come from. There's no way in heck viral antigen is just going to float around soliciting opsonins for years. If they did they'd form amyloid-Complement neoantigen plaques similar to those found in Alzheimer's brains.

Also, I'm curious if the John Snow Project would fit the bill; they're not the most prolific bunch, though any of the contributors is individually a good resource, as well. "It doesn't seem to happen a lot, so let's not worry about it" doesn't strike me as terribly scientific.

    If it can and we have both the means and opportunity to prevent it simply and cheaply, then we must prevent it.

    We can cease prevention efforts on a situation-by-situation basis at such time as rock-solid, beyond-the-shadow-of-a-doubt evidence can be presented indicating there's zero chance.

    "on the balance of probabilities" is not appropriate for harm reduction/prevention.

    WHO finally admitting SARS-CoV-2 is airborne (while still maintaining highly implausible deniability that there wasn't proof of such in 2020) is not so much better-late-than-never as it is an important step toward taking action to end the ongoing pandemic.

    Like it or not, these politicized institutions are a linchpin in the authority structure of our entire society/civilization.

    While the best time to say so was all the way back at the start -- and their egregious delay in doing so has locked in many catastrophic consequences, some of which are only beginning to emerge -- the second best time is now.

    When a respirator (disposable fabric or reusable elastomeric) passes a fit test having caught 95% of the aerosolized NaCL particles, the air is 20x cleaner inside the respirator than outside, thus it has a fit factor of 20.

    95% = 20
    99% = 100
    99.8% = 500
    99.97% = 3333.333333

    trendless OP , (edited )
    @trendless@zeroes.ca avatar

    @Infoseepage yeah, I definitely aim for as much protection as possible when choosing a respirator (faceHEPA ftw 😏), but I also think fit is far more important than rated filtration efficacy. There's too much variability with face shape/size to rely on others' tests for any specific model -- and tbh, I think there's some legitimacy to the idea that NaCL particles used in e.g. NIOSH tests aren't as analogous to the easier-to-catch bioaerosols as they are to harder-to-catch industrial particulates.

    I'm definitely all-in on elastomerics, especially when it comes to indoor shared air. I believe they give a better chance of fit, not only because they're constructed with more rigidity, have adjustable headstraps and/or halos, and use pliable elastomers to form the seal, but also because they often come in multiple sizes -- though some disposables do, as well.

    If my experience is any indication, it remains vital to test any/all respirators to one's individual face, even if "just" a DIY qualitative test. I have many elastos and a majority of them fail while moving/talking/etc -- standard components of a fit test and very much in line with real world use. I have many disposables as well and have found them to have an even higher rate of test failure.
