OC A Rare PortaCount Accessory: The TSI 8120

If you've been thoroughly reading /m/CPCSupport, you might be aware of the most common accessory for the 8020A, the N95-Companion, which was integrated into later models of the PortaCount. But did you know there's another, more obscure accessory for the PortaCount?...

WANTED: Air Techniques International PMLT / TDA-99M, Photometer-Based Fit Tester

This is perhaps the rarest aerosol based quantitative fit tester out there. We'd appreciate getting any leads on Craigslist or something....

Some things have changed since this was initially written. Here's most significant one:

NEW: Probe Acquisition Tips: Turns out the standard OD tubing the PortaCount uses corresponding standard OD tube parts. The parts you should be paying attention to are: 4mm Stud Push-On Retainers OD Phosphate and Canvas Snap Fastners, 3/8" Post. (thanks FTTP)

Note, however, that since this is industrial materiel, you may not be able to get probes for much cheaper than TSI themselves, so better to DM someone for bulk purchases.

Someone bought an 8010. Let me reiterate: Do not buy an 8010. It requires 100% reagent grade alcohol, which is expensive to ship, and on top of that, as I've pointed out before, it hasn't been serviced since 2001. There's a very good chance it could be dead.

Plus it can only display four digits on screen. Do you really want to limit yourself like that?

What is a "Fit Factor"? Plus: TIL, APF

I realized I hadn't properly discussed the definition of a "fit factor" in the last post, but since this is (IMO) important, basic mask information everyone needs to know, and since it is a prerequisite for understanding fit test exercises, I'm going to discuss it in a separate post without added jargon and confusion....

Quantitative and _Qualitative_ Fit Test Timings and Guidance

This one's a long one. I hope I've caught most mistakes and inconsistencies, but I didn't really plan this out, since I didn't expect it to be this long, so for the sake of correctness, I implore you to look up more established documentation, like... the PortaCount manual....

Subscribing + New Account Tips

Fedia.io is currently closed to new sign-ups due to spam. Of course, you could always post using your Mastodon account by mentioning @CPCSupport in a pinch (as described above).

You can even follow @CPCSupport (a subscription!) at the risk of your timeline being clogged, should @CPCSupport (or another community/magazine) become popular.

If that becomes the case, you could follow just me, @CPCSupport

But let's say you want to stop having a clunky experience interacting with the Threadiverse via Mastodon. Hey, do you want to be a part of the ActivityPub Fediverse (Threadiverse) that somehow gets as much engagement as Mastodon with a fraction of the servers, and so far, the only majorly competitive Reddit replacement (that also interacts with Mastodon?!)

You can create an account at one of the various Lemmy and Mbin servers/instances you can find on fedidb.org. (With the usual caveat of: browse around before you sign up)

Or... you could just create an account on Discuss.Online, like I have.

With a Lemmy/Mbin account, you can just subscribe by searching !CPCSupport and not have to worry about mentions and all that nonsense.

BONUS TIP!!! Check out old.lemmy.world!

For questions, DM @fediversefittester (fedia.social, not io) or @thetester on Lemmy.

Please note: DMs do not work across platforms. Mbin's only work locally (follow these Matrix rooms for updates) and Lemmy DMs only work on Lemmy. If you're on Mastodon, you need to DM my username of Fedia.social.

8026 Particle Generator Salt Shenanigans...

The over-engineered ultrasonic dehumidifier that TSI calls the 8026 Particle Generator was originally designed for the PortaCount 8020A, so you didn't have to have open flame candle, if you were, I don't know, paranoid about the flammability of reagent isopropanol (or some other substance in the room) and didn't trust yourself...

Mentions don't seem to work on posts, so mentioning @ghhughes

Thanks for commenting. I have two questions though:

  • Does the mineral content in the water matter?
  • Do you know why the N95-Companion has trouble doing a fit test with the particle generator at table height?

I've never been able to get to 70 p/cc with a candle. With that being said, I've also never been able to get to 70 p/cc with the 8026 at or above the height of the N95-Companion/PortaCount. I've yet to place a candle on the floor, for obvious reasons.

For the record, each salt tablet that came with my N95-Companion weighed 1.0 gram, or 1000 mg, not 100 mg.

Bonus tip: Page 93 details the procedure for doing this with an 8030. Pretty much no one has an 8030, since they're still supported by TSI, but if you have one, and managed to clean the sampling cone, maybe let us know how it turned out.

A procedure to increase particle counts, and, hopefully, decrease the amount of time wasted waiting to 1000 particles/cc by ghhughes:
