On this day 25 years ago, Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones became the first to fly non-stop around the world in a balloon. They suffered multiple mechanical failures through their flight, resulting in a icy cold trip that was definitely not fun but historic for #balloons nonetheless.

By the way, how do you like my new two-column layout? Since we're very visual-focused, it makes sense to present Fedia's thumbnails at their full 380x380 size. I still need to make it look better on small displays like phones, and I'm thinking I'll allow more columns on wider displays. It's too bad my CSS doesn't federate to any other instances and isn't used when browsing by tag.

@e-five Oh wow, thank you! I didn't realize I had an Mbin developer in the crowd here. I come from Old Reddit where CSS is all we had to work with. People pull off some sorcery with CSS, such as /r/GlobalOffensive's and /r/LeaguePBE's sidebar craziness and /r/AdamNeely's transparent background. It's a shame my CSS doesn't federate to other instances, so it's only possible to see it on my own instance.

A few things would help, though:

  • Add magazine panel options to display thumbnails at their full size, which on Fedia is 380x380, togglable for the main page and for all article pages
  • Make article pages download the attached image automatically and replace the thumbnail with the full image when loaded
  • Fix formatting of the magazine description so the line breaks federate to other instances
  • Get article badges working like Reddit post flairs
  • Add a magazine panel option to allow multiple columns and specify the maximum columns allowed
  • Throw an appropriate error message if an image I'm uploading is too large, which on Fedia is 6,000,000 bytes
  • Add a CSS variable for if we're currently in a dark mode
  • Write theme colors in RGBA instead of Hex so CSS writers can do math with those colors
  • Add a user option to restrict text string searches and tag searches to one magazine or all federated magazines

...That ended up being more than a few ideas. I should quit being lazy and make GitHub issues for some of these.

@hitstun That's quite the list. I'll try to take a look at things, especially the bugs. Federated things might be more difficult depending on how other software works. But you may be surprised to hear that I've used your magazine as an example many times, like just recently as an example of possible use cases for badges when discussing this feature in our matrix.

As for CSS dark/light, I could be wrong for what you're trying to accomplish, but I think you should be able to do that with:

@media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) { body { background-color: red; } }
@media (prefers-color-scheme: light) { body { background-color: yellow; } }

It at least seems to work for me in my dev environment, and is how I set up the current theme auto detection (to replace the JS one that originally made it flash white before changing to dark for dark theme users)

By the way, Windows 10 reminds me that today is the 240th anniversary of the first manned balloon flight. Pilâtre de Rozier became the first human to fly without a tether, ushering in decades of balloonomania. I already posted about this two years ago, but it deserves a mention today.

While I'm cleaning up, here's another flying broom I couldn't resist showing you: The Troublesome Maid Who Brought “Autumn” by alma on Tumblr and Twitter. The artist's Tumblr says "Please do not reprint without my permission." and we respect that. Kbin might embed that tweet, though.

I really wanted to post Julia Zhuravleva's witchy art from 2020, but her Twitter says "⚠ REPOST IS PROHIBITED ⚠". We respect those requests here and won't upload her art here, but if you like some witches on brooms, you ought to check these out.

Fedia.io is back! @Jerry worked hard fixing up the database and our microblog doesn't throw 500 Server errors anymore! Yay! I didn't forget about you airheads here, and we'll catch up soon.

The old subreddit had a "lounge" chat where I mainly just linked to things their creators ask not to reupload. Here are all of them in one post so it doesn't spam up anybody's feed:

November 21, 2022: Gensho Yasuda requests that their animations not be reposted, so I won't. But then I remembered we have a chat! Here's Shrine Maiden's Courier Service.

November 29, 2022: I like how that worked, so here's another work from an artist that requests not to be reposted. It's Children of Fire by Yamakawa, on Tumblr and pixiv. They're Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. I haven't seen that show, but these characters aren't known for flying.

January 30, 2023: I almost posted Dream of Flying in the Spring by Little Pine, but I found a note where the creator doesn't want their work reposted on other sites. I respect that, but I think it's from Stable Diffusion.

February 2, 2023: I also was about to post Balloon Walk by Hako, but they ask not to be reposted either. That's OK. There is plenty more Sonic fan art out there. I can make do.

February 23, 2023: Another artnot to be reposted: Mermaid Swimming in the Sky by shochikubai175 shows wild broom flying from Floyd Leech from Twisted Wonderland, based on Flotsam from the Little Mermaid.

February 27, 2023: 2/22/2222 Cat Day by Fuzichoco definitely qualifies for this sub, and I've posted her work here before, but I just noticed she asks us not to repost.

March 18, 2023: This seems to work well for art I like but the artist wishes not to have their work reposted. So, here's Jump to Nyatsu by Aky-Ami on pixiv and Tumblr

March 30, 2023: Found another /r/FloatingIsFun example I shouldn't repost: Magical Air Walk by tofumaabo. That's too bad.

April 4, 2023: Another magical art that requests not reposting without permission, so it's here: Haachama, You’re a Wizard! by JLT4n

April 25, 2023: And another, which I think was Instagram exclusive anyway: 🎃 Halloween Commission! 🎃 by Aadorah

I'm posting too much. I never wanted to take over people's /all pages with floaty things, but it's happening and I don't know why. I only wanted /m/FloatingIsFun to contain all the content from /r/FloatingIsFun from the start, but it isn't worth continuing to bother people who aren't into this stuff.

I originally planned to post 10-15 old posts from Reddit per day until I run out at the end of July. Then, I go back to my old 1 post every 2 days or so.

But since I'm only one year behind at this point, I could change to this plan:

Post about 1 per day for 1 year, roughly alternating between new content and old content Reddit had one year prior. Then, go to my old 1 post every 2 days or so.

To help me decide, please vote in this Strawpoll. It closes in about 24 hours.

@Jerry, what should I do if my magazine @FloatingIsFun starts getting a 500 Server error? I accidentally double posted and deleted the extra post, and since then, the main page of the magazine and my profile both give 500 Server error. I hope I didn't corrupt the database. I can still see my posts with the magazine's RSS feed and through other Fediverse clients.

@Martineski I'm glad to see someone carrying om some of the Imaginary Network stuff on the Fediverse. I've been porting all of my INE-like subreddit /r/FloatingIsFun to !FloatingIsFun and it's good to see I'm not alone anymore. Fedia.io can't see your sublemmies yet, but it's only a matter of time before federation catches up.

I made a tool for myself that should help you out. Paste any image URL into cell B2 and it will scrape SauceNAO for the Pixiv title and artist and stuff. It presents these a nice format you can copy and paste into your Lemmy posts.

Aw man, here we go again! Everything I post seems to end up on the top of Fedia's front page! I've got a lot of work to do before all 400+ posts from the original /r/FloatingIsFun are reposted here. @Jerry I hope I'm not messing things up too much.

Hi again! /r/FloatingIsFun had this lounge where I started posting cool art I found from artists that request for their work not to be reuploaded anywhere. I respect those requests and I hope the rest of you do too. I still want those arts to be seen, so I came up with this comment thread as a compromise. So, go check out Mienar!

Hopefully I did this right! Thank you for the rockin' chiptune magazine! This wasn't originally from a game, but it found its way into Retro City Rampage later.

Welcome to /m/FloatingIsFun, where we are easily distracted by things that float in the air! I'm Hitstun, founder of both this magazine and the original Reddit community /r/FloatingIsFun from August 2021 to June 2023. We joined the protests against Reddit's API changes that killed 3rd party apps. It appears Reddit is not going to back down, so we migrated to Kbin. For the next week, I'll be reposting all 400 content posts from /r/FloatingIsFun so this magazine starts with a complete set. Think of it as a New Game+. After we're caught up, I'll return to my regular one post every two days or so.

Feel free to post floaty things you find as long as you credit its creator in the title, post a comment linking to the source, and follow the magazine's other rules. I'll do my best to make this a fun magazine to subscribe to, a collection of floaty goodness!
