Look up at the sky! It's the aurora borealis! No wait, it's just Makoto shooting off a firework 🎆

Hopefully people are a little happier that things are happening, but I guess it's still very low action-wise. The mutants were never a threat at all to the main cast, and that's spelled out very plainly by Zara. They can just stroll through the streets and clear any out on their way, while the actual guards, mercenaries, armies, can't even handle a couple, and not without losses.

Can clearly see all the important people realizing just how powerful Makoto and crew are now, especially with Sairitz upgrading the honorifics used when speaking to Makoto. Hopefully means that Makoto will get doormat'd less often, but I guess we'll see.

The transmission restoration felt a bit lackluster in the anime, but I guess it's not that important. I feel like it wasn't really clear what he did, not that the novel makes it any clearer, but obviously I think Tomoe is supposed to be implying he didn't destroy the devices to disrupt telepathy, but instead shot a spell at every single person in the entire area to block or counter the device, that was my understanding at least, I could be mistaken.

And now we see that it was all a ruse! Oh my goodness, finally, this is what I've been waiting for. I love that this whole thing was just a distraction from the actual plot. Seems like the demons had a lot going on while we were stuck in Rotsgard, who knows what is happening in the rest of the hyuman world.

I didn't really like Aqua and Eris in the novel, but I actually completely flipped my opinion in the anime. Their comic relief is pretty good.

@e-five@kbin.run avatar

I'm sure you can tell I'm slightly biased here and overlook a lot of flaws 😆

It does feel kind of odd the demons can just march on both human capitals at the same time. Surely there should be like, a front line? Defenses? I suppose we're meant to think they got passed them, or somehow avoided them like teleporting, though teleportation seems like a big deal, I'm not sure what Limia king meant by "they appeared by star lake". Like, just spawned there?!

I can see what you mean in that a common complaint is to make one side seem smart, just make the other side act dumb. The hyumans do seem pretty lacking overall, though there are some who are at least realists like the princess. Rona always seemed like a pretty good strategist to me... but then again her first strategy is just "lol, hole in ground". I much more prefer all the other stuff like glamored demons showing up next to the world leaders which shows how far their reach/planning is

cut or maybe next ep stuff?

I do think it's fairly important to note, at least from memory, I think the demons didn't block telepathy until after the attack started. So the last anyone heard from Rotsgard, was the king/princess under attack, send troops, and then communication went dark.

Excited for the Cassette Beasts update next week? I've been checking to see if it'd go on sale for a few weeks/months now but I'm guessing it isn't likely to with a major update on the way. Not sure if I should pick it up or wait for the next sale, how are you finding it? Been wanting to play a creature collector recently after watching so much Persona 3 but haven't wanted to go back to my digimon/persona playthroughs

Slime isekai storyboard meeting notes: show don't tell.

I'm going stir crazy from being locked in these rooms.

Now was this Rozzo family ever mentioned before? It always felt to me like a random group out of no where just to pad content. I guess it has ties to the "Merchants" that have been mentioned before but... It gives off the feeling of a random mafia playing politics with demon lords and gods, it feels so jarring, like a Bleach filler arc.

And I guess when they said Hinata is two weeks away, they meant real time. 🫠

Edit: I will say that fireplace looks comfy. I want some nice chairs, a glass of wine, and a roaring fireplace.

I just finished setting up Linux Mint for an old buddy of mine on his old dog of a laptop, rendering it useful once again! ( i.imgur.com )

Edit 2: to everyone suggesting an SDD: i know. Look, if this guy had enough $$$ for an SSD, he could buy a used lappy less than half the age of this one that has an ssd and 2-3x the memory....

Any reason MATE over Xcfe? Just curious if the performance is close or MATE is better at things, not trying to question your decisions. I have a >9 year old PC at this point and installed Cinnamon on it but was finding it a bit laggy. I tried out the other editions but am sticking with LMDE for now, but sort of feel like I don't really need nice animations, I just need more CPU for faster compile times, haha

Midweek discussions - Hate reads

It’s that time of the week again. This time it’s about books you hate to read but still keep reading. Usually I drop a book when I don’t enjoy it but currently, I’m reading a series (Mythical Hero's Otherworld Chronicles) that I absolutely despise with a passion but I still keep grabbing new volumes for some reason that...

e-five ,
@e-five@kbin.run avatar

I saw this and was thinking, that's crazy, why would someone do that.

Then I remembered I'm in like the 8th arc or something of Arifureta. I read a few pages a year. It's the only book I have on my phone so whenever I'm at the mechanic or waiting at the dentist or something I get a few more pages down. Everything after volume 1 has just been "just gotta get to the end. just gotta get to the end." Been that way for at least like five years or more (on this one volume, I mean).

I knew as soon as I saw the preview post last week that I was going to have to prepare myself again for the comments on lack of action.

At least there was at least two fights this time, and both involving the main cast! Hey, that's something, right?

I'm trying to imagine what people were thinking when Ilumgand was talking about helping the hero and not interfering with Makoto. Cliché second chance? Then Mio is just "nah"

It's interesting Tomoe says that Root wouldn't be able to scratch Makoto. I feel like we're missing a lot of internal dialogue here, I couldn't quite tell from Root's reaction what he thought of that, did he just say "Interesting" or something? I feel like I remember there being a lot more thoughts in the source material, but maybe I'm wrong. Just feel like definitely feeling the weight of trying to adapt this as there's probably a lot of thoughts being skipped.

e-five ,
@e-five@kbin.run avatar

I guess it might be a good thing I'm not a director since I probably do focus on unimportant things. I just sort of always got the feeling from the source, and I don't think this is a spoiler it's just my feelings, that Root was a very conceited / egotistical kind of person. Maybe I just hallucinated that, because that's where I'm coming from is when the anime doesn't match my expectations of the character. Like I would've expected him to respond to being told someone is stronger than him with "You always were a kidder, Tomoe". I don't know, I feel like he's not really matching with my expectations, especially since people are calling him Luto instead. Like, did they really change that? Why?! It's like taking someone named Kuro that dresses all in black and being like "Actually, we'll translate their name as Jeffrey. Close enough". /rant

Sorry for missing this, seems mention notifications aren't working for me at the moment (hyphens have always been problems but because /kbin allowed them we're stuck with them, even though almost all AP platforms like mastodon and lemmy don't allow them) (we had fixed it four months ago but... I guess something happened since then). Not sure I know much about media uploads but can at least look into it / talk to one of the other team members that usually knows a lot about this stuff. (Alternatively feel free to post an issue on github as that probably will be more reliable than I am >.<)

@e-five@kbin.run avatar

I didn't like Hinata when she originally appeared, doubt I was alone there. I like her a lot more here where she's mostly just strategizing, regretting her initial encounter (appearance), and coming to her own conclusions about what is going on.

scene change from source?

So I think they changed the Nikolaus scene? All I remember from the manga is people saying they didn't change it there and that everyone was up in arms about it from, I assume, the LN, but it seems different in the anime?

e-five ,
@e-five@kbin.run avatar

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by can't find / subscribe, can you give more details? The thunderbird one wasn't there, so I just searched for it to add it, but the others were

!LifeHacks
!lifeprotips
!thunderbird
!belgium

To add a magazine you simply search for it, e.g. https://kbin.run/search?q=%21thunderbird%40lemmy.world though that will show it now since I already did it.

Magazines need at least one local subscriber to receive any updates, this is true of Mbin as well as /kbin and lemmy (as far as I know). It's a little hard to tell when a magazine has a local subscriber, we lost that info when we started using real subscriber numbers and unfortunately it hasn't been added back in a way that is accurate to whether there are any or not.

e-five ,
@e-five@kbin.run avatar

Magazines only bring in new content once there is a local subscriber. They don't populate older information. As far as I know, that's true of the entire fediverse (when I scroll down on remote mastodon users, eventually it gives me the message "Mastodon does not pull from remote instances, browse more on the original instance" or something to that effect), but it does seem like Lemmy might do something in regards to grabbing some entries via outbox or something, I saw someone post about it recently, we have an open issue to implement outbox so assuming that gets done, there could potentially be population of older content for at least pins at some point https://github.com/MbinOrg/mbin/issues/485

e-five ,
@e-five@kbin.run avatar

I get the impression from your posts you might be using the interstellar app rather than the web so it might be a bit different there, I'm not super familiar with it so not sure how to search for magazines

At least on the website, the search for adding a magazine is also different than the search that filters on the magazine list page, confusing, I know, not sure if the app has that distinction

Overall a pretty calm episode. They should have served some tea and cakes. 😆

Fitting that Abelia gets the final blow, though perhaps not how Ilumgand's father would've wanted things to play out?

I did completely forget that it was Root that came up with the sword thing, I had thought it was Tomoe, so it's kind of interesting that he would say that seemingly randomly.

The only thing I disliked was I felt they made the one attacking Makoto look a bit weak. I thought it was meant to be on par with Ilumgand but maybe not, without seeing it eating or wiping out nameless groups I feel like it sort of diminishes him one-shotting it.

e-five , (edited )
@e-five@kbin.run avatar

To me that was fine, like I sort of interpreted it as: first they tried to let the professional (purple coats) handle things. When that didn't go well it cut to the students pointing and discussing, so I would imagine they were strategizing / buffing (similar to their Blue Lizard fights). Though I guess it is weird to let the enemy (supposedly) power up as well, it did work out in the end, so I'm like, you can't really blame them, maybe they needed that time to win too, we can't say without knowing what would've happened if they didn't prepare.

Edit: Thinking more about it I can agree with you that it could've been better. Even if they didn't animate some generic fight scene in the background I think they could've improved it if they had the casters casting buffs on the frontline while the frontline pointed/discussed in that scene, just to make it seem like they were doing prep work rather than standing around.

I guess I saw a lot of hate on that other site for this episode but, perhaps it's because I've read the source material, nothing here really surprised me, all those scenes (the sisters, merchant, teleporting, king/prince, etc) happened in the novel, which is kind of why last week I said "just one more episode, and then another and another" because I don't really expect the climax of this whole thing any time soon.

The monsters do look a bit goofy, well Ilumgand looked a bit intimidating in some stills, maybe it's just the ED effecting us.

e-five ,
@e-five@kbin.run avatar

I guess this series has always grappled with people really not liking when it spends time on other characters, like the students here or on the heroes before. I never really minded that too much, like in Overlord my favorite volumes are 7 or 12. Think it helps keep things fresh seeing from another perspective as long as the characters are relatively important, though I guess we haven't really seen any reason to care too much about the students besides the sisters so far.

e-five ,
@e-five@kbin.run avatar

My favorite was always Fear Not This Night. Unique, I know

Pretty cool you were able to eventually get it. I remember a coworker of mine got the collector's edition solely for the Rytlock statue, but kindly let me have the art pieces / frame. I did borrow the soundtrack to listen to, but gave that back.

Rimuru planning to invent the dubstep gun from Saints Row IV (I actually thought this was from Worms WMD but looked it up, didn't realize it was a crossover)

Only round table politics again this episode, they can't keep getting away with this!

Edit: Not to constantly complain as politics and world building can be fun (like Overlord), I think what I dislike is the past few episodes have been a daily stand-up meeting of "Ok Diablo, give us a status update". I'd rather they just like, show us the stuff happening, like do a few episodes from Youm's perspective. Maybe controversial, but I'd rather that then this sit around a room panning stills and talking...

mastermind talk

The whole multi-mastermind thing seems a bit overly complicated and doesn't sound familiar to me at all. Kind of feels weird because I thought Raphael had identified who "he" was instantly in the WN or something like "it could literally only be one person think about what we know and what was said". Maybe I'm just misremembering, past the demon lord part I barely recall much of the story at this point

e-five ,
@e-five@kbin.run avatar

That's very surprising to me as it's a two year old game at this point. Looking it up, I guess there were three years between 1 and 2. Wonder if they're working on a 3 at this point

e-five , (edited )
@e-five@kbin.run avatar

A bit of backstory at the start which sort of rounds the plot out. Feel like most of it was pretty obvious, but they really spelled it out for people just in case they weren't able to pick up on hair styles in shadowy back alleys. I am shocked by what happened at the end of the episode... If it wasn't for the opening which has had the scene this whole time.

I can't quite remember if the whole Hibiki thing was a thing in the WN or if that was added in the LN. I don't quite remember it from the WN, but as 1Fuji2Taka3Nasubi noted, it's been mentioned in the manga at least.

It does feel like the demons really had a ton of pieces to play for here. A potential hero party member, messing with Rotsgard, which I can't remember if it was a trade center or education center or both for the humans, but I'm pretty sure it's important. The Limia, king? was it? Empire princess, adventurer guild master (of course mentioned he helped the demons before so maybe not this one, or maybe they'd just consider it a necessary sacrifice), and those Lorel Union folks. And all they had to do was potentially make Makoto less favorable to them. Seems like it should be worth it. Especially since Rona just made an informal verbal agreement not to harm Makoto, it's his fault for not getting things in writing, so he can't be too mad, right?

Excited that it's finally kicking off, one more week, and then another, and then maybe a few more... until the end.

@e-five@kbin.run avatar

When I saw that line somehow I knew it would be the one you would pick

When it comes to pacing, I do wonder how they storyboard this stuff. I feel like the rigid ~25min, 12 or 13 episodes must make it difficult. Like how they're going to split up the future content, I have no idea. I have some idea of stopping points but, there's a lot to do and feel like not a lot of great stopping points, though I guess cliffhangers are a thing.

I do wonder if non-aired anime ever gets more freedom of like, "ok this time we're going to do a 32 minute episode". "ok this season will be 16 episodes". Maybe not a thing but wonder if it would make pacing things much easier

e-five ,
@e-five@kbin.run avatar

I probably just forgot it then, most likely has been a while, and I think when I did reread it I probably started where this episode ends, funny enough, since everything before it kind of felt like the prologue to me.

Not a scientist so couldn't quite tell from the article if this would work for its use case; but all of the prepared / cooked food I see at my grocery store is packed in plastic containers. They all have shelf life of that day / maybe a couple of days (this is like a buffet + packed / prepared meals, not sure what exactly to describe it as). I always thought it would be great if that could be less wasteful, it'd definitely make me feel more likely to buy it instead of all being in single use plastic containers.

e-five ,
@e-five@kbin.run avatar

Definitely was finding it hard to describe what I mean, my store has a bakery/butchery in it and I think they prepare things in-house, like bake bread/muffins and then throw them in plastic bags, make batches of mac and cheese and throw it in plastic tubs, etc. It's possible they ship some stuff in and that wouldn't work, but I just meant for things that were literally like oven to shelves stuffed into plastic bags, maybe it'd be nice if it could be used there.

Wasn't sure if this entire episode was going to be the full tournament or not, but the change half way helped break things up between action and story. Always good to see MCs lose in creative ways. Certainly seems to set up some interesting implications on the future if sides are being picked.

I kept forgetting to mention in the last couple episodes that vol 1 of the LN is available in the West now

e-five ,
@e-five@kbin.run avatar

Ahaha, I can imagine people being unhappy about it. I always like to see MCs lose battles but win wars, especially when it's not about actual fighting. And this seems pretty realistic in a "your books don't work out" kind of IRL auditing you would expect. I guess the one thing is, with how insanely competent Shiki and crew seem to be, you'd think they would have already thought about this obvious flaw, but I guess you could also chalk it up to them not caring and knowing they could just pave all the capitals if they wanted to.

e-five Mod ,

I know that there are tools to export/import the community and magazine subscriptions.

I believe that's only between lemmy <-> lemmy as there is no import implemented in Mbin currently

I haven't heard of anyone migrating successfully between the two. Usually the most important thing is the instance private/public keys remaining the same. It was possible for /kbin instances to migrate to Mbin as the keys were kept the same so all other instances considered it the "same" instance according to activity pub. I'm not sure if that would be possible lemmy -> something else, but encryption is outside my knowledge (whether all AP instances use the same type of keys or it differs between software).

There is also the planned software Sublinks which says it will be a drop-in replacement for lemmy. I tried searching their github / old posts and couldn't find whether they would support mastodon, just what they have on their site: "Embracing the fediverse, it supports the ActivityPub protocol, enabling interoperability with a wide range of social platforms." But if they do plan on it, it might be easier to hop to that when it's available as it's specifically being made as a drop-in replacement so I imagine there will be migration docs available, but like I said, no idea of the timeline of that.

INTRIGUE! the episode

One of my fears with having such a hype OP, not sure how long it will take to live up to it as there's always so much setup

I almost feel bad for Princess Lily.

I forget how much they went into detail back... Oh I was going to say season 1 but obviously it was at the start of this season. But she obviously has a difficult past, just like a lot of the characters. All of the factions are just doing the best with the hands they've been dealt and the story does a good job being a bit realistic imo in that people act cautiously when they don't have information or continuously try to infiltrate / spy on other factions.

@hitstun just wanted to check with you as I think I misunderstood your request for a CSS var for color scheme. Do you mean you'd like something like class=theme--scheme-[light/dark] on the body class? For instance when the user selects tokyo night, solarized dark, dark, kbin it's theme--scheme-dark and when light or solarized light, theme--scheme-light to save you from having to type out selectors for each theme?

And I did investigate the magazine description federation issues. Think I have an idea, I'll make an issue for it and it will probably be the next thing I work on after my current open PRs.

#Mdev

e-five OP Mod ,
@e-five@kbin.run avatar

@hitstun I was planning on implementing this this weekend but realized before I started that I'd hit a snag. When the theme is theme--default or theme--solarized, I don't actually know if the color scheme is light or dark, it all depends on the user's system settings (if they prefer light or dark). I haven't been able to think of a way around that, since CSS isn't really a logic/programming language I can't do things based off of it. The most I could think of is setting like theme--scheme-unknown and then updating it via javascript after page load. That has the original problem when it was JS based though, in that it wouldn't be set until the page fully loaded due to the JS having defer on it. But maybe just having the scheme on all other settings is good enough? I don't have metrics but I bet tons of users are just theme--default though, since it's the, well obviously, default state.
