I'll tell you, gathering information on this was tough! I think what I'm writing here is the first English language information about this TV special that aired on March 23, 2007. Boy band Arashi made six of these specials where they conduct wild experiments suggested by their panel of 11 college professors. All of them agreed this balloon would fly, but Arashi took the opportunity to select Sho Sakurai, who is afraid of heights, as their test passenger. This special also has some experiments aboard a Zero-G parabolic flight.

I showed up trying to start stuff and immediately trapped myself. After my second turn, all I could do was guess from the 6 reasonable solutions with a 33% chance of losing.

That result after your first word is scary! There's like 20 reasonable ways you could go from there, and all of them potentially trap you.

When you get in a four-green-letter trap like you did after your third guess, if you're not in hard mode, there's a way out of it. You're allowed to ignore the clues and guess several letters at once. You were split between D, K, P, and V, so I'd have played a word like POKED. That can't win, but it guarantees a win in the guess after it.

This material looks like it's as light as smoke, but it's crazier than that. These carbon nanotubes are so thin and so strong that their tendency to straighten out is just enough to hold up its own weight. I kind of want one of these in my house, but we don't know the consequences of breathing in microscopic particles of this stuff. Safety first!

On this day 25 years ago, Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones became the first to fly non-stop around the world in a balloon. They suffered multiple mechanical failures through their flight, resulting in a icy cold trip that was definitely not fun but historic for #balloons nonetheless.

By the way, how do you like my new two-column layout? Since we're very visual-focused, it makes sense to present Fedia's thumbnails at their full 380x380 size. I still need to make it look better on small displays like phones, and I'm thinking I'll allow more columns on wider displays. It's too bad my CSS doesn't federate to any other instances and isn't used when browsing by tag.

@e-five Oh wow, thank you! I didn't realize I had an Mbin developer in the crowd here. I come from Old Reddit where CSS is all we had to work with. People pull off some sorcery with CSS, such as /r/GlobalOffensive's and /r/LeaguePBE's sidebar craziness and /r/AdamNeely's transparent background. It's a shame my CSS doesn't federate to other instances, so it's only possible to see it on my own instance.

A few things would help, though:

  • Add magazine panel options to display thumbnails at their full size, which on Fedia is 380x380, togglable for the main page and for all article pages
  • Make article pages download the attached image automatically and replace the thumbnail with the full image when loaded
  • Fix formatting of the magazine description so the line breaks federate to other instances
  • Get article badges working like Reddit post flairs
  • Add a magazine panel option to allow multiple columns and specify the maximum columns allowed
  • Throw an appropriate error message if an image I'm uploading is too large, which on Fedia is 6,000,000 bytes
  • Add a CSS variable for if we're currently in a dark mode
  • Write theme colors in RGBA instead of Hex so CSS writers can do math with those colors
  • Add a user option to restrict text string searches and tag searches to one magazine or all federated magazines

...That ended up being more than a few ideas. I should quit being lazy and make GitHub issues for some of these.

I predicted the matchup again. Here in the US, our college men's basketball tournament will begin in a few days, and we like to predict the entire tournament bracket and see who comes the closest. My starting word here left only 4 possibilities.

I detect a pattern here. On days like today, players might think they can guess the solution. That guess won't be correct, but it'll put us on the path to a 2/6 or a 3/6 if we play it right. This time, my starting word only left 3 possibilities, and I think that's by design.

  • Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection and Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max are in top shape on the PSP with extra characters and decent single player content.

  • Rock Band Unplugged is a stealth sequel to Frequency and Amplitude, worth a try for juggling a whole band's worth of instruments.

  • I also had a lot of fun with Half-Minute Hero, Lumines, Everybody's Golf Portable 2/Hot Shots Golf Open Tee 2, and the racing games DdCno1 mentioned.

  • And that's not even getting into the excellent options for emulated games, both retail and homebrew.

  • RetroAcheivements PSP games sorted by number of players is a good way to see the most popular games.

Tekken? Nah. It's a four button game, and you only need to map the shoulder buttons if your character has a good move with a weird button combination like Square+Circle. Street Fighter Alpha 3 really needs all 6 buttons, though.

You might want to search for a RetroAchievements collection of PlayStation Portable games.

British Pathé's newsreel archives show us more old-timey balloon fun! This newsreel leaves out that the day's experiments ended when Sgt. Ernest Arthur Dobbs got entangled in power lines, becoming the first ever balloon jumping fatality. There are ways to make balloon jumping safe, as Parabounce tried to do earlier this century, but it still hasn't caught on. If I was harnessed into a balloon like this, I'd never want to take it off.

More grinding with the same starting word, like learning a new character in a fighting game. One weakness is that it doesn't contain an S, so I have to use S in my second guess instead.

This puzzle sure gave us a hard time, but Scoredle lucked out and got it in 3.

It's Mar10 day, and Peach has her own game coming out this month. We used to attribute her floaty jump to that puffy dress catching the wind like a parachute, but we've come to know Peach as a skilled magic user that could probably float without the dress if she wanted to. She's not to be messed with.

I use ad blocking browsers like Bromite on Android and Librewolf on Windows, and I never encounter any ads on NYT Wordle. That page is my only interaction with NYT, so they don't make any money off of me. I hope whoever owns Lingo DMCAs them.

Reddit-style spoiler tags don't work here. They're supported in a couple third-party apps, but most people will see it exactly as you pasted it. Lemmy has its own weird spoiler tag format but Kbin/Mbin don't support it.

No harm, no foul, but just use Scordle's plain paste format and add two spaces after each emoji grid line.

I'm trying some new ideas after yesterday's X/6. I want to figure out an optimal approach with these priorities:

  1. Never lose
  2. Low average guesses
  3. Reduce human error
  4. Possibility of 1/6

According to Freshman.dev's Bot Leaderboard, I should start with SLANT, TRINE, CARET, ROAST, or LANCE. But, I'm not a bot and I don't have perfect knowledge of all playable words in the game, so I may need another approach.

I thought Soft Garden's boss Jackle was a good fight. He tries to zone you out by throwing tarot cards at you, and it's satisfying to slip through his cards and hit him.
