i am so over the web design trend where every piece of text on the page has to animate in

A webpage for a "Noble" crypto project, where each piece of text slides into view on scroll

Feels like the 90s and early 2000s flash splash screens are making a cyclical comeback. I didn't even realize it until I saw your post, devious bastards.

@molly0xfff This may be more than you want to do, but just in case...

I do most of my browsing in Firefox, which lets me set many preferences to an insane level via their about:config feature.

I set the layout.frame_rate preference to 1 in my most-used browser profile. You would likely need to use a different browser or browser profile to view videos, and I do so. (In Firefox, about:profiles lets me make profiles.)

@molly0xfff might be the top reason why I’m never going to be a web dev again. “I will build your damn site but the price doubles for every line of JavaScript” is not a great sales pitch.

I remember pushing back against carousels with a fervent passion that would be dashed upon the rocks of modern web jarbage.

@molly0xfff I can't imagine it's even that good for folks who don't mind it.

1st time. Hey, cool!
2nd time. Oh, nice.
3rd time. Yawn.

This!!

It's like reading a book and the next line doesn't appear till you reach the end of the line you're on.

@molly0xfff between this and Apple scroll jacking animations it’s a real low

@molly0xfff This kind of thing is really fun when you’ve a vestibular condition. As is when you scroll down and the page lurches sideways. Awful design and the web is full of it. Alas, there’s no big jolt with the web like happened when I wrote about iOS 7 – https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/sep/27/ios-7-motion-sickness-nausea – and so the drip continues. I wish there was an off switch for all this stuff. Fortunately, it doesn’t affect me too badly but I’ve spoken for people who can feel bad for hours after getting ‘zapped’.

@molly0xfff theory:
this animal, Unusablei Sellsizzlus, has evolved to mimic the behavior of the distinct and separate Powerpointfor Middlemanageri. Including transition effects, art style, and the at-first confusing combination of a huge number of figures & buzzwords with almost no actual information. The latter of which lulls the prey into an MBA-like stupor long enough to sign a service agreement and the first check.

web devs spent years agonizing over time to FCP only to now make people wait for their unnecessary animation to finish before visitors can actually read anything

@molly0xfff I was going to respond with that site that is super fast with no javascript ~”this site is really f’ing fast”, but web search is so completely broken today that I can’t find it.

Tho, I gotta admit, be cool if all corpos switched over to GeoCities and late 90s design.

@molly0xfff god yes

We took over the hosting for an organisation, and one of the “performance optimisations” I deployed for them was quartering the fade in time of their page.
