Outcome of #Putin visit to #China in terms of economic agreements signed:

  • ✅ Agreement on supplies of Russian topinambour and beef by-products, particularly beef cartilage and stomachs to China
  • ✅ Creation of a new nature reserve "Land of big cats"
  • ✅ Cooperation between TASS and Xinhua news agencies
  • ❌ Construction of Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline was not agreed

To me, these indicate an extremely close and strategic partnership between China and Russia, especially the beef cartilages are going to change the course of the world 😂

@tivasyk@mastodon.social avatar

@publicvoit could you explain in some detail (or point to a good detailed write-up) about how exactly this works for you? setting between two local machines is relatively strightforward, but you mention multiple machines with at least one server; is the server your central storage? what exactly do you expose to the internet to be able do sync from outside your lan? etc., etc.

i'm with , but looking for a simpler setup.

@birv2

tivasyk ,
@tivasyk@mastodon.social avatar

@publicvoit eh, having a networking background, i don't see how the first part of your statement works :-(

e.g.: with owncloud, i need (very simplified) to use dynamic dns to point to my setup AND expose ports 443 on the router AND have port redirection to the owncloud server on lan AND a reverse proxy to resolve url to the corresponding docker container AND have the proxy manage the tls certificate from let's encrypt…

i just don't see how syncthing «just works». any details?

@birv2

tivasyk ,
@tivasyk@mastodon.social avatar

@publicvoit alternatively, i could vpn into my own lan instead of dealing with 443 & tls, and that could be a good setup for syncthing (again, if it doesn't require 80/443). is that what you do? yet still: a dynamic or static ip, the on-router port redirection for vpn (unless it's configured on the router), etc., etc?

will today spin the topic of 2 May 2014 tragedy, when 46 members of pro-Russian militia died in a fire. What they will not be spinning are these facts:

  • the first people killed on that day were pro-Ukrainian protesters, hours before the fire
  • the pro-Russian militia barricaded themselves in Unions House with dozens of Molotov cocktails stored on the stairway
  • both sides were throwing things at each other, including the petrol bombs
  • the fire started on the stairway inside the building and due to the presence of the Russians' own petrol bombs it immediately went out of control

Pro-Ukrainian and pro-Russian journalists in Odessa jointly conducted an investigation, in addition to the official investigation. All evidence and conclusions can be found here:

https://2mayodessa.org

What Russia will never tell you is however what happened before and after the fire:

  • the violent clashes started when pro-Russian activist Vitaly Budko ("Botsman") started firing live rounds at Ukrainian protesters, two people died from gunshots
  • Budko was firing from behind police cordon led by Odessa police commander Dmitry Fuchedzhy, literally from behind his back
  • immediately after 48 people died on that day Budko and Fuchedzhy escaped... to Russia
  • one reason why so many people died in the unions house fire was that the decision to send fire brigade was arbitrarily blocked by head of emergency services, Vladimir Bodelan
  • guess what Bodelan did after the fire? yes, he also escaped to Russia

Russia for the last 10 years has been blaming for "killing 46 pro-Russian protesters", but at the same time it has also offered shelter for the people most involved in the killing and refused their extradition, prosecution or even interviewing. As a matter of fact, Russia has granted Bodelan a well-paid job in the occupied Crimea.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Odesa_clashes

There's one more important historic context: similar events unrolled in all Ukraine, including Kharkiv and other towns. Thanks to intercepts of calls between Sergey Glazyev, Russian president's administration coordinator, and pro-Russian activists in Ukraine (so called "Glazyev tapes") we now know that escalation of the protests and violence was actually their goal.

i just sat down at the hospital bed with a neighbour of twenty years who just had a temporal lobe stroke at 70.

we got along well over the years, always shaking hands and chatting about anything that came to mind whenever we saw one another for a few minutes. we were not close, but friendly. in the last few years i had been avoiding him, because i disagreed with his take on the russian war with ukraine, and just didn't feel like listening to his politics anymore.

i knew that he had grown up in eastern europe during the soviet regime, but had never delved too deeply into his personal life. he had been a teacher before he became a welder, a career which he retired from a few years ago. but that was about the depth of my familiarity.

today, i listened to him cry and recount his years fleeing romania on foot, at 21 years old, walking 700 km (and sometimes running, from border police) along the railroad tracks from transylvania to serbia and yugoslavia and croatia and slovenia, before finally arriving in austria to work for a few years.

he regretted that he couldn't help his parents when they died. he was sad that he had starved as a child, but was proud of his upbringing in a strict communist education system. that he had been trained as a soldier at 20, and survived the training. he was mystified that god would punish him after trying to live a kind, honest life.

he told me about getting drunk with his friends in paris, smashing a few windows of église notre-dame des champs with cobblestones they had pulled out of the road, and then being locked up in jail for two months. not to brag, but simply to tell someone else that it had happened to him.

after two hours, i began to form a picture of a very complex person, torn between mixed feelings about the past and the choices he had made in that time.

this is the first time he has had a life-threatening illness, and he is now going through a personal crisis. these are all things we could have not talked about casually as neighbours, standing in one another's driveways for twenty years.

it was good talking with him today. it was good hearing him think out loud, and just listening.
