Rain Comes to the Arctic, With a Cascade of Troubling Changes

Rain used to be rare in the Arctic, but as the region warms, so-called rain-on-snow events are becoming more common. The rains accelerate ice loss, trigger flooding, landslides, and avalanches, and create problems for wildlife and the Indigenous people who depend on them

Here's your Monday ice update. Have a good week! sea ice extent is currently the 13th lowest on record (JAXA data)...

• about 220,000 km² above the 2010s mean
• about 260,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 730,000 km² below the 1990s mean
• about 1,110,000 km² below the 1980s mean

100 years of May sea ice. Recent trends in declining sea ice extent are largest in the late summer/early fall (August-October) and smallest in the boreal spring (March-May)

Full data set available from 1850 through 2017. Summary of methods: https://carbonbrief.org/guest-post-piecing-together-arctic-sea-ice-history-1850

Animation of polar stereographic maps showing Arctic sea ice concentration for every May from 1918 to 2017. There is a long-term decreasing trend in recent years around the ice edge and substantial interannual variability through the entire dataset.

Sea ice extent in the Bering Sea remains close to 1991-2020 median in NSIDC data. Large areas of open water north of the ice edge are normal this time of year. The lack of any significant areas of lower concentration ice in the southern Chukchi Sea is unusual for this point in the Spring.

So, this was released today. My third stamp with Canada Post. Qarlinngua (The pants). And technically my second stamp with a family member in it, as the tiny figure in it is my son Travis. Now for one with Hilary in it.

I’ve very proud of all of these, beyond the cache. They are about my home, and family. And also my family has a long history with the Post Office, 101 years. My grandfather, father, and brother were all postmasters in Roblin.

The greatest warming is along the Siberian coast and in the Barents Sea, especially near Novaya Zemlya and Severnaya Zemlya.
