@minnfinn @Bridgemakes The work is the part that I would rather miss. While I think my father missed farming, all his recreations were mostly extra work for us... Cultivation is not something I feel up to personally. I respect those that do it, but it's a lot of work.

Alpacas
Note: I do not own a farm. But the city I live in is technically zoned "rural" so there's no rules against having these animals... in the same sense that there's no rule against a dog playing basketball (i.e. this does not make either a viable option)

@minnfinn @Bridgemakes @derrick_lewis I had a friend that kept australorpes (sp?) for a long time. We could do it, but I'm hesitant to add a creature dependent on the kids, as they are fickle. But having fresh eggs on site is a nice benefit, if you're willing.

I swear to you it really is a city and not farmville, but there was a legit alpaca farm not 3 miles from me, and and at one point something happened to the fence (storm maybe?) and the farm owner was posting all over facebook because his alpacas were loose in the city...

@Bridgemakes @minnfinn @derrick_lewis I did not personally interact with the alpacas. My understanding is they were recaptured in the development nearby the farm. But apparently it created some excitement, with police and animal control running through peoples back yards chasing these weird animals that most of the people didn't even know they were living near.

As we approach 2024 I've started seeing memes based on an episode of Star Trek, in which they referenced Irish unification and stated that it was happening next year.

Let me be clear, there is nothing wrong with pointing out what people of the past thought would be happening today but please keep in mind that the troubles are very much in living memory. (1/2)

I don't know why people in a professional setting who don't know me make wild generalizations.

I've managed a SOC and was the lead incident responder for a F500 company with 23k people. I have a master's degree in information security engineering with a focus in penetration testing. I usually score in the top 20% of CTFs I participate in.

I've been in the tech field for 22 years, starting off in tech support, but moving to sys admin work, network admin work, endpoint management, and then security. I did so good at implementing tech solutions and collaborating with people I moved into lead roles then went into management because I genuinely like mentoring people.

I helped build this current SOC, helped interview and hire a lot of the folks on the team, helped setup their tools, and work with them all the time.

I know what managing a SOC takes. I know what managing a red team takes. I know what managing THIS particular team takes. I just don't want to do it for free.

A bit more to do with physics than natures design. The more massive an object is, the higher it's terminal velocity. A professor once put it this way; if you dropped a mouse down a mine shaft, it would scurry away. a cat would be shaken up, but survive. You would break every bone in your body. More or less yes. It's actually more recent than that. It dates to the 19th century. A Bible school teacher came up with it after reading revelation and thinking "but God's not going to let that happen to me, right?" And he made up a whole new part of Christianity to explain why he'd miss the bad stuff

My understanding of the term has always been as an umbrella term for all things including autism, ADHD, combinations thereof and related diagnoses. I've used it in that context when trying to group them together.

Fun fact.

Both Stratford and Bath have a river called Avon running through them but they are not the same river. There are several rivers in the west of the UK called Avon and the name is simply old Welsh for river (Afon specifically).

I like to think this is because when the Romans invaded they kept pointing to the rivers and asking "what's that called?" And the natives looked puzzled and responded "Afon?"
